I've lived in the Netherlands for the last nine months and share my thoughts about this country in this video.
I talk about my expectations and my first good and bad impressions after the arrival. Then, I share my top 5 things that impressed me the most after living here.

What a pleasant review you gave here! For me the Netherlands has to offer an incredebly amount of history, architecture and art. Music (especially classic music) is one of the highest standard's in the world (like the open canal- concerts in A'dam as well as concerts and festivals inside and outside through-out the whole country (the Netherlands is small but not tiny either) Lots and lots to happen if you're into culture...

First Welcome to the Netherlands, and what a beautiful video you made of our country. And i really appreciate that you started learning Dutch right away. We can speak in English but we prefer to speak in our own language. For me it is important that you can decide for yourself how you want to give meaning to your own live, without others interfering. One small mistake. We use DEBIT cards, not credit cards, and often, you can't even use a credit card here. The main supermarkets you can, but most other shops, not so much. For daily things I mean. If you want to buy a car, that's different.
Klopt. Creditcards worden niet vaak gebruikt , willen ze ook liever niet. Gewoon betalen met een bank betaalpas of met contant geld.. That's righ , Credit cards are not used often, they would rather not. Just pay with a bank debit card or with cash
Correct I was calling them credit cards for so long (the US + Russia influence) it completely integrated into my language! It's absolutely correct that it's debit cards here. It's actually a big upside as well in my opinion. Credit cards could lead to huge debts for some people.

You can use credit cards but only with your PIN code.
And in some cities many places accept only Maestro 😂 which is a pain for a tourist from EU. When living in Netherlands I always had some cash on me, because you never knew when they gonna say, sorry, Maestro only. :)

It’s amazing that expats seem to get houses quickly when Dutch people often have to wait years to get a house.
Many landlords tend to rent especially to expats, as they can thriple or more the prices, making the houses unreachable for Dutchies. We often have to depend on social housing, or on lower rent housing. For expats housing often is paid for by their employers, or they get a stipend towards housing costs.
Its normal. expats have more to spent in general and they don’t have te be on the low budget social market
I think our building is 70% expats, but I am not sure the reason of that. But some Dutch people here as well. It's extremely expensive thou. We didn't have much choice, it's the only apartment that approved us. All the other apartments indeed had multiple people waiting on them.
Anyone can get a house, just bring your wallet. The reason expats find houses fairly quickly is because their employers are willing to pay (a lot).
Expats pay high prices for housing, so if you can afford it you can have an apartment pretty soon.
Welcome! I live here my entire life and I feel it the same way as you do. 'Perfect' does not exist but 'good' does. And it is very good living here. Many people don't see that anymore (you will discover that when you hear all the complaining) because we are simply used to it and most people take it for granted. I am every day thankful for that, especially because there are so many countries where it is not going well, to say the least. Yes we have to be thankful: peace, freedom, good education, healthcare, and, and.... there is so much. And we should not take that for granted: it is a blessing that it is all there in our little country...

Love only exists for me the only lovable / loved being and I am the only great being, and such terms cannot be misused by others! But yea, learning Dutch is awesome, and, all should start learning it - I highly recommend learning Dutch and Norwegian and Welsh etc, which are all gorgeous languages! I started learning Dutch last year, and I reached an advanced level (over 8.000 base words) in about 3 or 4 months, as it’s the easiest language to learn (especially for an English speaker, but also in general) and it has the most pretty words (almost only very pretty words, like English) which makes it even easier to remember the words fast, because prettier words are usually remembered faster!
Dutch and English are the prettiest languages ever, so they should both be universal languages taught in every school - if one doesn’t learn Dutch, one is going to miss out on so many pretty words and poetic lyrics etc, and Dutch is really perfect for poetry and lyrics, so I even started writing lyrics in Dutch myself, and also learning a lot of Dutch lyrics from songs that have a Dutch version as well, like those songs from Nightmare Before Christmas and Frozen and Ik Ben Vaiana / Ooit Zal Ik Gaan and the songs about the hunchback from Notre-Dame etc, where the Dutch version is even better than the English version, and I never thought I would say something like that before learning Dutch, but once I started reading the lyrics and noticed how poetic Dutch sounds, I knew I had to learn the language as fast as possible, because I wouldn’t want to miss out on perfect poetic lyrics and so many pretty words!

The internet-problem (regarding quality) you mention is strange. I have fast internet, but most important the speed is consistent. About 500 MB/s. I do use an ethernet cable that I plug in directly to the router, which helps. So I don't use wi-fi. But even wi-fi is good. It probably has to do with location. I hope it gets better for you! :) Installing it when you first move in can be annoying, that is true. :) Glad you like it here, though! :) Welcome! :)
Thanks for sharing. Yeah, I think it's only related to our specific situation. I think the cable from our technical box inside the walls is quite bad, that's causing the issue. But it's also not as bad. It just disconnects during the calls from time to time. We're planning to move soon, so it's fine! :) Thank you for the kind words!
@@dpashutskii another typical issue that happens in the shitty provinces. The holland regions are a giant net to catch problems. Housing is way to expensive, parking becomes a issue, roads are garbage compared to for example flevoland, its overfull, and it is stacked with migrants who refuse to intergrate and ruin the culture. These issues are examples of why I decided to leave my province North holland. Now this issue is as bad and even closer to worse in south holland. the holland regions have failed miserably and try to constantly evolve to improve their situation. Which isnt such a issue in the rest of the country, on top of that we pay less for less problematic issues. Your rent in your city is close to 1500-3000 for housing, while in the east of NL its 500-1000 maybe on the expensive side. Internet in your province is garbage too, connection sucks as much as the holland provinces dipped in their quality and name-sake. Gonna be straight up you have chosen a city which most tourists and migrants do, there are a handful that migrants flock to every single time. And all of them think they did that by choice and interest, but its more of a mind game. you heard, visited those provinces and locations more, so you're more comfortable and familiar with it, even if you take a city you havent been in, you got a general idea of the people and think then about either going to a popular city or moving away from the biggest ones but one close to all the big ones. And every other province is generally with a complete different mindset. As 10 out of 12 provinces think the progressive mindset is retarded and damaging our culture. And 2 provinces feel very much like destroying culture in exchange of tourism and migrants. which are the holland provinces. Its for no reason worth it to live in those provinces at this current time and age. We only move there to study or if work would cause too much traffic issues. beyond study or work nobody wanna live there. which is why you see only people live there who always did, migrated to, or work/study. its a very selective group we in the rest of the country disagree with and find out of touch with our values and culture. My suggestion would be to move in flevoland, or more east, housing will half in price, size nearly doubles at that price since houses are bigger there too. No internet issues or such since those are issues related to geographical locations and the way things are build. The holland provinces are nice to visit but not to stay. you choose wrongfully. which is also why you are left to figure out for yourself. If you had come to a neighbor in lets say Overijssel province they would give you probably part of their wifi until yours works, they help you set up. Nobody is too lazy to help someone who needs it. Problem is that that mentality is nowhere found in the holland provinces. yes you might find it now and then with people, but its considerably low compared to the rest of the nation which have values and try to help others. you choose to live in the provinces with the most migrants, most tourists, and least dutch provinces as they turn into migrant mix cultures. So what you enjoy is dutch rights with migrant values all around you. nothing dutch to begin with. I can guarantee you in your street is a muhammed or some somali family. which you would rarely find in cities with few tourism and media attention. But if you compare the foreigners who live in the east or north/east how they behave is much more in line with our culture. whereas in your province you have all these cultures mix with their own kinds, keeping their own traditions, their own values as we dutch respect anothers values, but migrants who come here dont always respect ours. and that behavior is not tollerated in the rest of the nation. so all the misbehaving people go to the same cities, people who dont want to intergrate pick cities they can continue to speak english in so they dont need to learn dutch. You choose a province where you have a thousand issues with migrants and that by itself goes against the nation you picked. which was supposed to be dutch culture. So now you enjoy mixed culture, where you have people who dont help you out and you figure it out by yourself. which would be very rare to happen anywhere else in this nation. its typical. i can guarantee even if they are dutch people they must be living there for generations as they are detached from the rest of the country, or its migrants/foreigners. anyway that behavior of people is typical in those provinces. which is exactly why most of us dont ever want to live there. And for me, well i came from those provinces, I lived there, and I have to say it went to hell. Which is why I decided to live in a different province. Now its much better. And whenever i go to big cities with lots of tourists and migrants you can see how deteriorated the culture became and how detatched from the rest of the nation that place is. But on top of that water issues with salt cause more corrosion and repairs, cable issues, weight on ground sinking slowly buildings all of that are issues you get in addition to living in those provinces next to the sea. Again its great to visit to the beach, or shop in cities, or even work, but living there is pathetic in quality compared to the rest of the country, and you pay 200-300% price for it on top. Total scam and migrants believe they made a good choice, but out of all provinces those with holland in them are the worst if you want to intergrate, enjoy decent life quality and so on. As you already noticed. People aint always honest due to political correct behavior, i dont play childish games like that. I will just straight up tell you with reason why you choose a bad location. Hope you learned from it.

Population wise the Netherlands are not a small country.... bigger than most countries in Europe: Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Portugal, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, etc etc etc.... And I think ZIGGO also delivers internet in Den Haag.... ZIGGO is the only company to offer same speeds, so it doesn't get slower if you are living farther away from a central distribution point .... They offer different speeds, the higher the speed the more expensive....
That is true! I think I was mostly referring to the territory. I have quite a high speed plan, the issue is with the cables inside my building and mostly disconnects, not speed.

Hi Dmitrii! I am surprised of finally hearing an expat being okey about the weather haha. We had been thinking about moving to NL for some time and when we finally went for the first time this year (for vacation and to really know the country), we arrived on a very windy, cold, "wintery" night, with the classic ligt-rain in Amsterdam. At that same moment my husband told me "I want to live here". So definetely the weather is not a problem for us as well :)
Hey! Haha, yeah. I hate very hot and very cold temperatures so mild climate as we have here is just perfect. It true it rains a lot but also as people said "you're not made from sugar" 🤣 Also, having planning your trips and proper clothes, makes it all a very small issue. Yes! Where do you live now?
Internet speed and connection depends on the part of the city you live. The newest parts have glass fiber connection with 1000 up and 1000 down. In older parts they're still in the process of building infrastructure and the speed is lower.
Thanks for the info! I think in out case it was also because the house was renovated. We literally moved in while construction was completing in the building. Both KPN and T-Mobile said they' still have to do some work to start connection. We eventually ended up with Ziggo which has a decent speed but the connection quality isn't great.
@@dpashutskii yes Ziggo upload speed is not that great especially if you have a lot to upload. So I switched tot kpn glass fiber. But the connection was already present in the house I live in.
We have glass fiber connection where we live (Twente). I'm not sure why but randomly the speed can drop to "dial up" speeds. Very annoying. I hear stories like that from all over the Netherlands.
@@dpashutskii the main problem with KPN etc. is that they're grossly understaffed (mostly working via subcontracters) for connecting the glass fiber to homes. A friend of mine had the glass fiber stick out of their pavement at the front of the house, and had to wait almost 6 month for it to be connected...
Как дела Дмитрий :-) I am a Dutch guy living in Antwerpen and now for 3 years learning Russian. I started because I used to travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg every year for work. And I enjoyed my visits very much ! Now during COVID I changed jobs and will not travel to Russia any time soon ;-) It is refreshing to hear your impressions and feelings about the Netherlands. Usually this kind of videos are made by American expats in the Netherlands. Reflects clearly the difference in reference culture (not speaking evil about any of them!) Все здорово! 😅 Haha, I just came back from Antwerpen a few days ago! Great city you have there! Curious how you ended up in Belgium as Dutch? Nice that you're learning Russian, I love when I meet people who do this, despite all the issues we have around our culture in the media right now. The culture is not the one to blame. Also, respect because I am still struggling with English and moreover with Dutch, so can't imagine how hard it must be to learn Russian. I grew up in SPb and lived 5 years and Moscow, love both the cities in different ways. I also noticed that 95% of Dutch expats KZheadrs are Americans/Canadians! I don't have anything against them either, but it would be great to hear other cultures opinions as well. So that's what I'm trying to do. Maybe there are more of them, but they have channels not in English. Check out @letsmeetabroad if you're curious. They're a couple with a guy from India and a Dutch woman. They are one of my favorite creators with focus on travel.

Welkom in Nederland, Dmitrii! Good luck with learning Dutch. I have a few Russian friends and they told me that learning Dutch from a Russian perspective wasn't as hard as they had expected. At least as far as pronunciation goes. Switching from cyrillic to 'our' arabic alphabet was the hardest bit. But you seem eager and willing to learn so I am sure you can be teaching Dutch to Russian friends and relatives within two years from now. 😎 I'm in Scheveningen a couple of times a year because I have an aunt living in the area and a friend of mine is the owner of the carrousel ride at the boulevard. Just mention my name and you might get a ride on one of his beautiful (and original and antique) horses for the price of a children's ticket. Enjoy the ride! 🕺

@@dpashutskii Yes. Russian words like stoerman and zontik come from Dutch words from the time we were both great seafaring nations and 'stole' words from eachother. It's always good to learn, right? 😊Do you know of Russian words that the Dutch integrated in their language?

Abouutt the internet. Together with Sout Korea, Switzerland and Denmarik The Netherlands have the best and fastest internet in the world and a choice of many providers. I think your experience is an exception. Could be because the lack of employees all around that waiting times for connection can be longer

Thanks! 1. Not yet, definitely record something when I have more experience. 2. Yes, it's required by law. Haven't used it yet ;)
There is health insurance, it's mandatory if you live here, only the basic one though. The extra's is up to you. You can chose of lots of insurance companies, but there is no big difference in the price. You must have your own GP and dentist, even if you don't need them right away. Everything is changing and prices are flying high the last years...sigh...

I am surprised about the internet.. I have 1 gigabit and and it is very very stable..The weather... yes the weather has been much less rainy last autmn than it used to be in the old days.. Climate here definitely is changing.. It is getting more dry overall ,it gets hotter in the summer and in the summer when it does rain, it seems to be a lot harder..I am not a weather expert, but in the 80's and 90's days over 30 degrees were an exception.. now we often see days nearing the 40 degrees and 2 years ago a new record was set to over 40 degrees. The winter's used to be colder.. as a kid I used to be able to iceskate (almost) every year, but now this is rare. I hope you enjoy living here and wish you a lot of fun aswell

As a Dutchmen, Russia or Canada looks perfect to me. Big countries and a lot of nature.👍 I live and grew up in Schiedam. We are the Jenever city and have the biggest mills in the world.
Amazing! I actually like smaller countries now. I thought about moving to Canada instead of the Netherlands, but I am glad I didn't. Schiedam is nice. I was passing by a few times when cycling from The Hague to Rotterdam, but I haven't explored it properly.
There are a lot of benefits and allowances in Netherlands. I heard about the housing allowance also. So, do the expats can also get the housing allowance?
Yes, all the benefits are applied for locals, applied for expats who live here legally as well.

is there increased humidity? Are there problems with this in the houses? I mean specifically in The Hague
Most renovated and new houses have really good isolation and often also a central ventilation system inside the houses...

Nooo, never heard of it. As other said, most of the houses have really good isolation and humidity is not that high in here. Certainly it doesn't feel that way after living in South East Asia.

Thank you Jasper! I think you're referring to social housing no? I've never heard that people spend more than a few months on finding a rental place, especially from Dutch people. It's just simple rent.
@@dpashutskii yes, social housing is very hard to find, there are too few. Normal renting, i dont know. Its too expensive for a lot of people, just like buying a house (for starters).

not credit cards, DEBIT cards, huge difference. Debit cards are connected to a bank account, and is paid directly. A credit card can take between 1 to 4 months before the shop where you bought something will get their money. Most shops don't accept Credit Cards for its too much hassle and dutch laws provide a lot of consumer protection so a Credit Card isn't needed for its insurance etc.
That's correct! Totally the power of habit calling them credit cards for so long.
I'm not sure you're right about accepting only credit cards. I think you mean debit cards (normal bank cards) as credit cards aren't used very much in every day life here (at least not to my knowledge as a Dutchy myself).

Hahaah, point nr 5 is funny. Most dutch complqin about this... because they dont know how other countries work. We should appreciate that more. 😊

Correct, I am planning to get a citizenship. The process is quite similar to other EU countries - you have to live in the Netherlands for 5 years on legal rights and then pass the exam (Language + history). The process could take up to 12 months as well. When you're getting Dutch citizenship, you have to renounce any other citizenship you have.
I have a friend living and working over there, for 2 years, fixed term, STILL cant rent a house. Lives in his moms house. Or hes lying to me... Says you cant talk to realters, you have to fill stuff online and wait to be choosen, then MAYBE they CHOOSE you, then they ask for your wage to be 3 times to price of the house/flat. Cant find anything. In 5 months searching. I am starting to get the feeling he is making this up...
I think your friend just doesn't want to move. Everybody I know manage to find houses, nobody has left the country because of this. It is brutal but it's totally possible. Especially if you already working in the country. Most expats finding the place in the first month of arrival when they don't have any history.
Praising the pubic transport in The Netherlands always annoys me living outside the "Randstad". Living close to Texel I did not had a driver licence for 7 months. You can not go anywhere in reasonable time outside big city's and it's very expensive.
Randstad is not the only place where it's good. I and most people I know live outside of Randstad, and public transportation is even better here. But I think there are a few places around the country where it's not as good, like Zeeland, area around the Texel etc. But it's an exception and you probably know that before moving there so it's not a suprise.
It's a nice country but... i wouldn't place it as the best in the world. Defo top 3. Depending which aspect you take into account. I still love it. Specially Brabants :D

@@HladniSjeverniVjetar Yeah, mountains are definitely something that's missing here. But Europe is very small, so you can travel to the mountains pretty easily. That's what I love about living in the EU. In many countries you have to travel for 8 hours on the plane just to reach the border.

Because for the viewer, this gives a distorted image. *But for anyone reading this and is considering moving here. Location is key, and living in a good part of Den Haag definitely helps ;). Where i live in The Netherlands Glass Fiber connection speeds is being installed for all people so the connectivity issue is not there.. If you end up learning Dutch and speak the language properly, then i´m sure you´ll make the Polish jealous, because most of them refuse to learn the language while they work here. Nothing against Polish people but not wanting to integrate into the Dutch culture is annoying however. Well the best place in the world?, the regular Dutch person would say, NO.
No one will say it about their own country. The grass is always greener abroad xD I don't know how good will be my Dutch, but I'll certainly do my best to learn it.
No matter how proficient, English is not their native language and at some point the Dutch will get tyred of having to explain everything in English, having one on one conversations exclusively, and not having their full expressiveness. They don't mind people not speaking Dutch when they are about to leave soon, but if you are serious about staying, you can't take the extra effort from the Dutch for you for granted.
Absolutely agree and I totally respect and understand that. That's why I am learning Dutch. In a big group of Dutch people it's quite noticeable when they quite often switch to Dutch. Especially when beer is involved! 😂
@@dpashutskii Of course, you're multilingual, you know the difference between a native and a learned language. Many British and Americans don't, they often even don't notice the effort is getting very assymetric, for you there is at least the symmetry, the equality of both having to speak a foreign language. Many get caught out because they think they don't have to, and even many Dutch think it doesn't matter to them whether they have to speak English, but it does. And when they only start learning Dutch after two years when they start feeling lonely and homesick, there's a lot of catching up to do and that is without applause and encouragement the early starter will get.

No... the Dutch speak Dutch and that is their day to day language.... with some friends and as a customer you'll be fine to speak English.... but this is not a country with multiple official languages.... there is one official language and that is Dutch. Not English. And in Friesland you have the Frysian language existing next to Dutch. So if you live in The Netherlands you should be willing to adapt to the official language.

Yes the first thing you have to do is make friends in The Netherlands... they can tell you (especially if they are nerds* ) They are the guys that know the internet best, and to find the best energy and gas probiders too. And if you can't find them that easy... with about 50 euro's you always can rent one. I really hope you are not caught in the middle of the discussions about the Russian - Ukraïnian war. And if somebody askś you on wich side you are on... you can always tell them that you have family on both sides. At least ik makes it easyer for you.
Thanks for the tips. Making friends is indeed important! I have my Dutch colleagues and a few friends in the Netherlands, so it helps! I am always in the middle of discussion about the Russian invasion to Ukraine because it's impossible to avoid, and I have an active position. But it doesn't bother me much, I like to speak my mind. In Russia, you can't speak your mind, you'll end up in prison, so I always enjoy this since I left the country.

The Hague has been the capital of the Netherlands for almost as long as the country has existed as a political entity, starting in the late 16th century. I guess it's appropriate, though, to have a capital that really isn't the seat of government, just like having a king who really doesn't govern. 🙂

I think it's mostly about the cables inside the building. When we crimped the cable inside the technical box, it became better.

Thanks, I was a bit lucky, but I am not rich, tho. Also, around 70% of our building were Dutch people, so I guess it's not impossible after all? ;) But yeah, the market is brutal, one of the reason I bought a house now instead of continue renting.

To see my views on war, you can see the video on my channel about it. Welcome to The Netherlands. It's an exception you had bad experience with internet, because The Netherlands ranks as one of the best countries if it comes down to internet and practically the whole country is covered with a 5G network. Fiber internet is already pretty common (1Gbit down / 1Gbit up), and in my case I am still waiting for my connection, but I am still satisfied with my Cable provider who gives me 1Gbit down and 50Mbit up and the connection is really stable. So, yes, your internet experience is an exception to the rule because internet here is 'bloody' fast. 🙂 Regarding the Dutch language, I have a Filipino spouse and I said to her: You already know English, then you are already half way there. English, Dutch and German are all Germanic languages and many English words look like Dutch words (and vice versa), the only difference is pronunciation. For example, "Water" = "Water" , spelled identical, but spoken differently. And another tip regarding Dutch I could give you if you put a line in past tense the verb usually sits at the end of the line with either "Ge" or "Be" added to it. And when we are busy anyway, in English up to the number 21, in Dutch we start to reverse the numbers. So in English its "Twenty One", and in Dutch "Eén en Twintig" (One and Twenty).
Yes, I think most of the people have said this. The Internet issues are quite specific for the building. Noticed that too about the language, I was learning German at some point in life so it's a bit easier now to learn Dutch. But it's still a long journey ahead. Thanks for the tips about the Dutch!
