Since Corona came to The U.S., I've experienced more racism than usual (I'm half Korean). I live in a small town with about ten Asian families, and nobody can tell Chinese from Korean or Japanese, etc. It's sad and scary.

A Filipino woman was attacked at a train station a few days ago in my city. It has really triggered a fear amongst my fellow Filipinos in our community. I'm darker than most Filipinos which almost makes me looks mexican, and having a mask on most of the time also helps, but I cant help but still get a spike in heart rate when Im alone and I still see a red hat on someone walking toward me.

It seems as if a part of what he was trying to say got lost a bit, what I hear along with the context before that part is that he wanted to say "or at least exchange it for something you want" but it just came out badly. Don't take it as an offense, but I think you truly misunderstand how much off a pain in the ass it can be to voice-over something and have it sound like it was recorded there on site, because recordings ín a recording will always sound different, and it even takes sound editors from TV series a pretty good amount of time to get it right, let alone for something that's live each day.

Deflecting or changing the subject is called "what-aboutism" - a simple rhetorical tactic heavily used by the Soviet Union and, later, Russia. It's an attractive tactic for Trump and Putin, allowing them to be vague but appear straight-talking at the same time. What-aboutism is essentially a schoolyard taunt, brought to a national and global level. The idea behind what-aboutism is simple: Party A accuses Party B of doing something bad. Party B responds by changing the subject and pointing out one of Party A's faults - "Yeah? Well WHAT ABOUT that bad thing you did?" It's not a complicated tactic - any grade-schooler can master it. But it came to be associated with the USSR because of the Soviet Union's heavy reliance upon whataboutism throughout the Cold War and afterward, as Russia. One big reason whataboutism is so attractive: it's a simple way to shrug off criticism or even responsibility for any wrongdoings.. Whataboutism flattens moral nuances into a black-and-white worldview. But in this worldview, it's very difficult to be the good guy; idealism is the ultimate naïveté, and anyone who dares to criticize another can be "unmasked" as a hypocrite. This creates a useful moral equivalency. If nobody is perfect, then it means that Trump should get a pass for any wrongdoings.

YES! I've noticed this for a long time. In Eastern Europe, whataboutism is a frequent tactic, even in daily life: justifying your own wrongdoing by pointing out other people's wrongdoing. I've noticed this Eastern European mentality being present in the US. And this isn't the only thing which is specific to our side of the world I've noticed, other rhetorical elements are weirdly similar to communism: globalist = cosmopolitan (a charge levelled against Jews during Stalin's rule, which meant they were disloyal to the USSR and more loyal to Israel or the West), enemy of the people (враг народа in Russian, "dușman al poporului" in Romanian). I can clearly see a pattern of Eastern European communist terms being used and the old communist logic. I keep saying this: Trump reminds me of communism way more than anyone like Sanders or "the squad". He even involved his own family in the White House, exactly like our last communist dictator whose wife no. 2 after him and whose son (and presumptive heir) ran other important party organisations (we were on our way to be Europe's North Korea, he admired what Kim Il Sung did there).
What gets me about whataboutism is that in a roundabout way, they're admitting they know what their own are doing is wrong..... and they fail to grasp the fact that one person doing something wrong doesn't absolve another's wrongdoing.

@@Cha4k indeed high quality pattern recognition (like the ability to see the links between cause & effect even when the system is less simple) is quite often a result of training, often professional training. in many nations that is (utterly unsurprisingly) one of the simpler aims of public education. perhaps you need better training? or better instructors? or better practice?
