1930s Antique Screwdriver & Oldtimer Hammer - Perfect Restoration.
I restored "1930s Irwin Antique Screwdriver & Estwing Ball Peen Hammer" in the video. "Made in USA" Swedish immigrant Ernest Estwing was a self-taught engineer who started as a six-cents-an-hour machinist before eventually striking out on his own in 1923. His big idea: Hammers forged from a single piece of steel would be stronger than the traditional wood-handled models. He developed prototypes in his garage and then patented his "unbreakable" design. In 1884 Charles IRWIN owned a pharmacy in Martinsville, Ohio. A local blacksmith who was a customer of Mr. IRWIN's came up with the idea for a solid center auger bit. He sold the rights to this invention to Mr. IRWIN and a year later, after patenting the Auger bit, Charles IRWIN, along with four other business partners formed the IRWIN Auger Bit Co. About four decades later there was another blacksmith with an idea, this one in the small town of DeWitt, Nebraska. William Petersen was a Danish immigrant who invented the first locking pliers in his blacksmith shop, and began selling them from the trunk of his car to farmers and people in surrounding towns. He patented his new idea and called it Vise-Grip.It was the beginning of what would become two tool industry leaders, joining forces to create one industry giant.
In 1993 the company's histories would converge. Petersen Manufacturing, which changed its name to American Tool Companies in 1985, acquired the IRWIN Tool Company. Don't forget subscribe to my channel and like these videos please. Thank you for watching.

Ok, as pointed out by others, this isn't a restoration. But this is a beautiful hammer, and I would love to have it in my cabinet. Awesome job!!
That is no longer a tool, that my friend is a work of art! Beautiful simply beautiful. 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Thanks 👍
I agree most certainly that is a BEAUTIFUL TOOL. Loved to have one myself👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
ABSOLUTELY AMAZINGLY COOL😁😁😁😁😁👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
It's a piece of jewelry when you finish with the hammer! Just beautiful! Thank you for the work you do.
Always perfection. Can’t believe you don’t have a couple hundred thousand followers already. Just amazing stuff!
Thank you so much 👍
He is going to get there, and we can jointly make it by reference his good job to all our friends and families. Very perfect restoration work done on the hammer, I would have ♥ to see what will happen to the screwdriver.
somewhat ripoff of "MyMechanics" Even with the moniker. Although nicely done.
Your habits on the table saw gave me the shivers! You need a cross-slide, not a push stick!
everything is OK
@@meinemechaniker We will see if your tune changes after you lose a couple fingers.
@@meinemechaniker Please tell us that you have fixed that saw? Your skills Will be nothing worth of you lose your fingers or get your eyeball cracked by a flying piece of wood .....
@@meinemechaniker So far. I've had table saw injuries, they're not fun.
Yes, make yourself a crosscut sled my friend.
Absolutely magnificent! My compliments to this artist - I’m inspired!
Beautiful and useful creation. However I have that very screwdriver and semi restored it several years ago. Part of me hated you destroying that rare screwdriver. But your end result was stunning. Great attention to detail. Someone 100 years from now will say. "I have never seen a hammer with that type of handle." They will spend hours and hours trying to discover when it was manufactured and by whom. If KZhead still around, perhaps they find this vid.
😅🙏🏻
You turned those boring generic tools into one beautiful piece. I loved it.
I am glad you liked this project 🙌
Have a whole set of these screwdrivers and absolutely love them. But none look as beautiful as your restored ones. Fantastic job
Hi @tammystark6364 , i myself have several of these screwdrivers two in MINT CONDITION two near mint and others in various condition , may I enquire as to how many make up a set , and have you ever been able to establish the origins of these drivers _ who were the makers Stan. Edinburgh Scotland
How beautiful is the "Grain" not rain. ☔
Absolutely beautiful. I can't see that seeing the light of day in a blacksmiths smithy though. Hopefully, it will be a work of art for years to come.
You saw a strikingly beautiful new design in two tired old tools and you committed the time and effort to create it. Congratulations! Please ignore the comments of the naysayers and continue doing what you are obviously very good at.
thank you so much 👍
David Painter I agree with you completely. It is his design and tool if he wanted to make it pink it is no one else’s problem but his own. I hope he keeps on refurbishing tools as he is excellent at it.
@@Andy-Gibb thanks a lot 👌
Fantastic job, one of the best projects I’ve seen so far.👏
Stunning craftsmanship. Brilliant idea to fuse the two to make a bespoke hammer. Restoring life to two redundant items.
should do the screwdriver too with the handle of the hammer.....nice job ...regards
Beautiful result. I wondered about the weld, but it appears to have leveled and polished with no signs of porosity. On the strength comments: while I agree that it's theoretically weaker than the original forged hammer, the pinned connection adds a lot of strength to the join. I wouldn't hesitate to use it for light to moderate work. One of the nicer restoration videos I've seen. Your finish work is excellent.
Thank you so much 👍
Looks lovely when finished, but my heart sank when you cut that beautiful old screwdriver in half. You should have refurbed it and made up a similar looking handle for the hammer.
Yea, It's pretty but that is it. This is now a show piece as it isn't functional on any level. Basically just turned two tools into art pieces. It's his choice to do so, but this isn't a restoration.
Don't worry, I have another screwdriver. I'll restore it alone. I promise.
thank you but this is a merge restoration. the hammer is still hard and usable. but i will not use it :)
@@meinemechaniker Your a gem. I've seen them done before n they just look spectacular.
I agree with you .
That is one beautiful restoration. If I hadn't seen the video I would never have believed that a perfect handle ball peen hammer was not factory-made. You can work wonders
Thanks sir
Beautiful restoration. I wish you would sell some of these amazing works.
thanks
Wow, I never seen so many negative comments in my life. And to all the know it alls! This guy took an ugly old screwdriver and hammer, merged them together into something we could never imagine! Lot better then restoring a worthless screwdriver that we’ve seen done a 1000 times. Great Job. KIU. One of the best KZhead restore artist I’ve seen.
People like you motivate me. I need these comments. thank you so much.
True!!!
I reckon that was the wrong word he used on description, because when something is restored we try to change as minimal as possible on the original object that is being restored, and he used the word "Perfect Restoration". What I understood from the video title was he would restore a 1930’s Antique Screwdriver & Oldtimer Hammer but he made 2 in 1. Apart of that, it doesn't take off the merit of the job, it's a piece of art and he got a very good skills.
There will people who complain to God at judgment day.
Maybe I am late to the video, but I don't see any negative comments? The ratio of up to down is fantastic positive and the video and his creative work is always excellent.
Keep doing what you do. It's a pleasure to watch and always satisfying to see your results. Ich danke Ihnen.

Now that was very nice. I found my self trying to reach for it threw the screen :)

well it is not a restoration , but a rebuild/modification .. but otherwise yes, beautiful job. Still misleading title
Great job. I like watching you work and restore.
Quite peaceful watching his surgical precision in creating a truly beautiful object. No longer a toll but an art gallery piece.

Man at first I was shocked 😳 then after you went crazy with the band saw I was like oh boy no he didn't? Then after after welding it and smoothening out I was like oh my ? If only turd could by Polish I am sure you'll make it nice 👍 looks great and one of a kind
Sure looks like a well used hammer!! Danged if you aren't pretty good with an angle grinder!! Love the video!!
🙏🏻
Been in the wood trade for sixty years and never seen anything quite like that. Brilliant!!!!
I am glad that a doyen like you liked it. thanks.
I dont think ive ever seen a perfect pattern hammer until now! The "screwdriver" at the start was more of a chisel than a screwdriver 🤣 It turned out very well in the end, and with me being a woodworker I really like the wood you chose for the handle. The yellowish colour from the Teak will darken with time and become even nicer 😁 One thing tho...... at around the 8.20min mark, when you crosscut the wood on the table saw; this was a very dangerous way to do it. I have met 3 people in my small town who have only 9 fingers because of a table saw...... and I know MANY others with 9 fingers or less from woodworking groups that I am in; please be careful with that saw my friend. In case you are not aware, the fence on that type of saw is for ripping cuts, along the grain. Crosscuts might be ok sometimes, but not on narrow parts. There is a very high chance that the wood will "twist" as you are pushing it through, and when that happens the wood is jammed into the blade and it will at least be thrown back at you at a high rate of speed...... even worse; the wood moving in this manner can potentially drag your hand into the blade. Also, use the push stick on the part you are cutting/keeping, NOT on the waste. Using the push stick on the waste side of the blade creates an even more dangerous situation, as soon as the cut is finished its only one hand holding the wood between the fence and the blade; this is VERY unsafe and greatly increases the chance that the wood will twist and get jammed into the blade. The way you were concerned about the waste piece tells me that in the past the waste piece has been thrown back at you..... this is because of the large gap around the blade on your table saw, the wood starts to fall down the gap and then gets caught by the blade and thrown. In this situation there isnt much power behind it because it is only the waste touching the blade and being thrown.... itll frighten you more than it actually hurts. There is MUCH more power behind it when the piece being thrown at you was trapped between the blade and the fence, its like a missile and it will do you damage. You could make a wooden "cover" to go over the gap maybe, look up "zero clearance insert" and you will see what I mean. And always push the wood through the blade, do NOT bring it back past the blade to where you started. I dont mean to sound like im givin you a lecture 🤣 I jus dont want you to get hurt, a table saw is quite a dangerous machine if not used properly. Be careful, and listen to your gut...... if it tells you that something isnt right or that it could be dangerous; then find another way to do that job..... trust your gut! I could tell you were nervous with that saw by the way you handled the wood in this video, I think you were ignoring your gut. A chopsaw is perfect for this type of cut, a bandsaw will do it too...... a handsaw would even make a good job of it. Dont take my words as a harsh critique...... I am only tryin to help you stay safe brother 😁
you're great my friend, thank you for this valuable information. 🤗🙏🏻🌿🍀
@@meinemechaniker I'm happy you took my words as I intended them 😁 I didnt want to be "that guy"...... like I'm the "safety police" 😂 I jus dont want you to get hurt. A table saw can change someones life in a bad way in only a split second........ I want you to be able to keep doing what you love for many years to come; a bad accident could change that. Take care Meine Brüder, enjoy your day 😁
@@whittysworkshop982 Thanks again mate. Good people are easy to understand. 🙏🏻🥃🥃

Magnificent transformation!
Im just curious, without any clear markings or anything like that, how is it you are able to date and identify tools like this?
The end results were beautiful and unique. I too wish you would have restored the screwdriver.
Thanks 👍
Beutiful restoration...superb Sir. Hope you come out with some more.
I thought you were going to combine the two into one tool at first. A hammer screwdriver, lol. Beautiful result however.
Wow, just amazing. This combination turned out beautiful!
Thank you so much 👍
Be aware of the wood cutting at the table saw, how you did it is probably the most dangerous cut at the table saw ever. Use a crosscut sled next time!
you are right, i will pay attention next time.
Made me cringe
@@lee2003uk 👍
You are correct. The rip fence was used for a crosscut. This is dangerous due to kickback caused from pinching the stock. A miter gauge is to be used at a minimum for crosscuts, a crosscut sled is preferred. I prefer a radial arm saw over a table saw. (Vintage cast iron DeWalt or Delta). Only use the rip fence for ripping. There was also no riving knife or blade guard. At least a push stick was used in his right hand.
Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship, as always. Very nice job sir 👍👍
🙏 thanks
Ficou perfeito, parabéns!!🇧🇷👍👍

Even though I'm usually opposed to destroying old tools in good condition like the screwdriver in my opinion you made a much nicer tool out of the two and I'm ok with this I restore old tools to keep them around I've done anything from old bug sprayers to post drills and many hand tools and a chainsaw and this is very cool to see you have done so excellent job making it look as if it came that way you earned a sub
