1940s Fisher Anvil Restoration - Making an Anvil Stand.
I restored "1940s Fisher-Norris anvil and making an anvil stand in the video. "Made in U.S.A." Fisher-Norris was the first large scale manufacturer of anvils in the U.S, found in 1843. They used a patent process that welded a tool steel plate onto a cast iron body in the mold when the anvil was cast. Up until this time all good anvils were forged from wrought iron and faced with tool steel that was forge welded to the body. The Fisher process produced an economical and very servicable anvil. They are also much quieter than wrought or all steel anvils which ring like a bell. Fisher-Norris anvils are often called “City Men’s anvil” because they don’t ring. This 100 lbs example was probably made in WW2 era, it doesn’t have the Eagle logo, Fisher stampings or the weight numbers on it. To fasten the production rate, it is possible that they have removed those markings. Don't forget subscribe to my channel and like these videos please. Thank you for watching.

@@meinemechaniker copy cat of "my mechanics" channel. Although nice work, seems cheap to steal somebody else's idea and name....
khap60 it's ok. my mechanics does the same thing
@@Pooopers ? care to explain ? what I see here is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagiarism
Although the restoration is nice, the act of stealing someones idea isn't. And it will never get you to the same level of succes that ''my mechanics'' has achieved. Be original and you'll far more likely to be cheered on and appreciated. Be better and stop piggybacking off of other peoples' succes.
First time I've seen anyone put a whole anvil in rust remover. Certainly some SICK work goin on here.
That's the most precision anvil base in the history of anvil bases. Looks like a museum piece.
True, considering I most anvils I have seen have just been on a stump like they first grabbed before it was cut.
Please read to the end or you may misunderstand me. As a Blacksmith, I kept thinking that “ you are making it too pretty to use. Who would ever want to ding that anvil up by actually using it as it was intended. It seemed like a waste of good steel.” But…….as a Craftsman, this project makes my heart swell with appreciation for the skill and effort put into it. It is very pretty and I will just accept it as an object of beauty rather than a tool of industry. Well done, Sir, well done.
However, if he chooses to use it as intended...it has a brand new life ahead of it!
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that if it ever were used seriously again it wouldn't last long. It was a nice cosmetic restoration, probably great for a non-technical person to decorate their livingroom
With the amount of work he's put in it. I doubt he'll ever really use it for its intended purpose. "Hey guys. Want to see my show anvil?"
“ Museum or Gallery “ piece …..put simply …..a work of art….respect to you man……
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
The large drill bit for wood has a centering spike. If you drill a pilot hole first that spike won't catch the wood. Then the drill bit will wobble.
great job. apparently there's some kind of ball bearing test you can do to help judge the quality of the anvil by dropping a large bearing onto the top surface.
just found a fisher anvil metal detecting :) you rock!!
That's a lot of work for those steel straps to do absolutely nothing. Looks nice as a showpiece but those adjustable feet are the weakest link
The metal bands around the stump are suposed to prevent splitting of the stump, but the way you made them won't help. I also think those tiny feet won't last long, if you would use it. In this project you spent a lot of work in unnecessary details, but you didn't care about fuktionality.
agreed, entirely cosmetic bands, feet which make it a completely not useable as a working anvil stand. even painting the anvil isnt something you'd do on an anvil being used for actual smithing. but it looks pretty and gets those youtube views... *shrug*
The metal bands can easily be welded together to fix that problem, the paint has rust inhibiting properties, and although I agree that the feet won’t serve well, I guess it’s a good thing that he made them removable and therefore replaceable. Right? So maybe he was looking ahead for possible other solutions but could only work with what he had available to him at the time? Or maybe he will realize that he needs to adapt to his problems when they appear and fortunately arranged things so that that process will be easier? That’s what I see. If you’re going to look down at people like that, try being a productive and constructive critic who offers answers for your stated problems rather than just someone who picks at things. Both of you. I’m just saying…
If that anvil is going to be used rather than looked at the shiny wood and emblems won't last.
"Trenton Makes, The World Takes" Cool to see my hometown represented and respected an ocean away!
Now that’s what I call restoration. I cannot stand to watch these videos where they just use a grinder on the top. You did it the right way. Congratulations. It is wonderful to see someone do it, right
I'm glad that there are still people like that who care about precision and beauty, I thought we were disappearing, I have no words to express my admiration, BRAVO keep up the good work, we are not disappearing, respect from old BG.
This looks like an anvil that a legendary smith would have in any Fantasy RPG! I love this, every minute of watching this was mesmerizing!
I wonder how long it stays that image of perfection when used....
Perfection! Even the bolts are all exactly straight. Never thought an anvil could be artwork
Thank you
After all that work, it’s finally ready to drop onto the Road Runner
👍
Coyote would be proud to be pummeled by that.

A work of art, beautifully done. I dont think you were going for a functioning anvil as much as an artistic momento to the thousands who have labored over an anvil. Well done.
Thanks sir
Looks very nice but bands need to be one continuous piece.
I wouldn’t expect anything less from you. You take tools of the trade & turn them into stunning functional works of art (not that I’d ever have the guts to use them once you’re done with your treatment). You have mad skills sir! Wow!
Thank you so much 👏 mr. Parker 🙌
Though with feet on that base I don’t think it would last very long to actually use
Awesome work
thanks 👍
Forgot to mention. Those base bands look nice, but sure ain't gonna stop the basefrom splitting unless you weld the 4 corners of each.
Stunning retired anvil.
Germany, only you could produce a man who would use Helicoils on an anvil stump. I applaud you. All jokes aside this was amazing. Very well done.
yeah, helicoils in a wood substrate, lol!
The bands are there to keep the log from splitting not as a decorative piece 🤦♂️😂😂😂
😊🙏
Yep! Very, very pretty! But from blacksmithing point of view many aspects are pointless 😁 most important thing - the anvil edges should be rounded. Otherwise the coldshuts will be created while forging at the face edge. Still very pleasant to watch and I had nice time watching the video!
I was thinking the same thing ... Lol. Really should just weld up the corners and call it good
@@WideAwakeHuman I'd rather say there should be at least two halves that are bolted together so you could crank the bolts up exerting some force squeezing the stump for long lasting performance. But there's no denying that what he made looks pretty.
Don't forget the anvil may ring as he didn't set its base in something like sap or epoxy to transfer energy more efficiently to the log
Yes! This looks metal as hell. The small details made me happy. Please tell your wagging assistants that they did an excellent job.
Is love to hear how it rings, before & after. Oh, the harmonic sounds of the forge!
That's a true work of art. If that were in my possession, it would take pride of place in my living room. Very well done, the anvil and stand are a reflection of your skill and commitment to excellence. Thank you for sharing this video.
Thanks I was amazed by the way you like it and even the value you give to what I do. I think I will put this product in the best corner of my office.
All other anvil restoration videos on KZhead just retreated into a dark corner because of this one's brilliance. Superb video as always, truly you are a master of not one but many crafts.
Thank you for this great comment. luckily you are.
Check out my mechanics... thats the original account
Now that's a beautiful Trophy 🎉.
meticulous work, fabulous result
I think people flatten the point on the horn so if you walk into it it doesn't hurt you so bad.
Almost perfect, the only thing I don't like is that you didn't weld the metal plates around the wood, it's supposed to be welded so is it stops the wood from splitting
I took different measures to prevent the wood from splitting.
@Gmail X 👍
Really cool restoration. One criticism: There are no elongated holes holding the metal straps on, so as the wood expands from moisture, could be more likely to crack.
Todo o processo de restauração e também o resultado foi magnífico!
Obrigado 👍
This guy is absolutely amazing. I would love to work for this guy and learn a new trade. Sign me up.

WOW! I am nearly wordless. Surely no one would ever again strike that magnificent anvil with a hammer. An amazing demonstration of skill and patience.
thank you so much 👍
I really don't know what I love more the Anvil or the Base !!! Beautiful
👍
That is a beautiful job but I cannot waste my time watching any more videos by someone that has that much equipment, nothing personal and I am happy for you it is just way over my head.
Here’s a tip for ya. After you take metal parts out of rust remover solution, wipe them down with WD40. It will keep the metal from flash rusting. Great work!
😉👍
I use olive oil because its less toxic if one has to heat the parts.
His paint won't stick to a surface sprayed with WD40. Better tip. After using the rust remover put it in water with some baking soda. It will neutralize the effects of the acid used to remove the rust. Old Trappers tip I learned for dying brand new traps.
Идеальная прекрасная работа! Столько сил потратить чтобы сделать деревянный огромный КУБ! БРАВО!👏👏👏
Спасибо.

Parabéns pelo excelente trabalho !!!
Thats too pretty to use it needs to go to a museum ... Nice!!!!
Not going to lie, i shed a tear this was so beautiful of a restoration
Really beautiful work. I wish any of my anvils looked this nice. Two small critiques, however. First, the feet you put on the stand, I'm not sure how well those would hold up to the repeated pounding if this anvil was put back in service. And second, the steel bands you added at the top and bottom of the stand make nice decorations, but won't add much to stabilize the wood unless you weld the corners together.
I was thinking the same thing about the feet. As for the bands, I can see them being something that prevents splitting, but only if they're welded together at the seams.
My exact thoughts. I was hoping he welds the corners untill the end :) but its a really beautiful work
Feet holding up wouldn’t be the biggest concern the biggest concern with the feet is that contact points are to small and anvil would ring and have bad rebound
@@MrMagicBlox Even if they were welded, they aren't exerting any compression on the wood, so they wouldn't do much to prevent splitting. They would need to be welded at 3 corners, then flanges welded to the fourth with a gap between. Then a nut and bolt pulling the flanges together would provide the compression.
No matter how many of your videos I’ve watched. You never seize to amaze me with your craftsmanship and attention to details!!! 🙌🦾👌

Amazing. There is no way I’d ever use it. It went from a very worn tool to amazing tool art. Incredible, sir!
thanks
Now you've done it. That thing is too PRETTY to do any work on!
oh that's awesome!! the anvil was made in Trenton, NJ USA - I am from NJ (New Jersey) and would have never expected to see an anvil made here, let alone see it on a youtube video doing restorations in a German Workshop (I'm guessing you are in Germany... maybe Switzerland because they speak German there too right?) WOW!!! It's a small world. I LOVE THE LEVEL OF RESTORATION YOU GO TO! MORE THAN ANY OTHER RESTO CHANNEL I HAVE SEEN!!! (except for My Mechanics... but we won't talk about that lol) - THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU JOY YOU BRING ME, AND THE REST OF THE WORLD!! :D
Thank you so much 🙏🏻🌿
Nice job, love the stand. Only a couple nitpick complaints or critique would be the edges of the anvil face need to be rounded or "broken" slightly. The smith using the anvil normally does this to his/her preference though so it's not a big deal as new anvils come with sharp corners or barely chamfered corners. The only other possible complaint is the banding doesn't look like it's been welded into a solid piece? Would be much stronger if if welded and then bolted to the stump. Minor complaints, really nice job.
Thank you for your constructive criticism.
@@meinemechaniker Very very minor criticism, overall outstanding work and much nicer than the concrete filled pipe I use for a stand.
👍
Lovely work and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the entire process. Well-executed and beautifully shot. A work-of-art result!
Thank you so much 👍
I wouldn't want to use it for nothing but a decorative piece. To nice to ruin. He did an amazing job. 👍🏿
Very beautifully done, on both pieces I must say. Nicely detailed too. Thank you for the video.
Just a beautiful piece and this project looked like a blast from start to finish.
Outstanding restoration! Thank you.
One of the best restoration videos iv seen on KZhead.
thank you so much
Well I have to say that was an absolute Master Class!, bloody amazing workmanship, I loved it.
Thanks 👏
Easily the most beautiful anvil restoration I have had the pleasure to see! Overall one of the best restorations of an object I’ve seen! Wonderful work! I hope it brings loads of rewarding work for you!
thank you so much 👍
It's a piece of furniture, now!
Dave Smith What do you think the contents of the metropolitan museum are part of?
This channel is just a cheap copy of the original channel "my Mechanics"
Johann Göring my mechanics definitely wasn’t the first restoration channel on KZhead.... also just going to go out and say I’m pretty sure that Meine goes way beyond what the other restoration youtubers go. This guy literally surface ground an anvil....

Absolutely perfect! 👏. Thank you!
Extraordinario esfuerzo, en sudor y dinero, a lo large de muchos meses, seguramente, admirable en todo sentido, felicitaciones por el logro y por eso te sigo. Un abrazo desde Argentina.
thank you, greetings to Argentina, regards.
Only you would be this precise with an anvil stand. This is not a criticism, I am just amazed at your attention to detail. Most of us, me included, would have grabbed a stump from the woodpile to use as a stand. Keep it up mate. I, for one, am excited when I see your videos. 👍🇦🇺

That’s awesome. Thank you🇨🇦
Hi, I just ran across this, that's a fine job you did on that restoration. I found a similar one, 150, about 15 years ago, and have been using it since. It's in fine working condition, saved me having to do what you have. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine, very nice pieces of iron and steel. Thanks again for showing this!!
Wirklich ausgezeichnet. I have seen many restoration videos and believe you have a most satisfying balance between function and form. The attention to detail on the stand/base is even more impressive, particularly the inlaying (the logos are a nice touch). This piece will be appreciated by many for a long time. Speaking of appreciation, thank you for the English subtitles.
I would like to thank you for this wonderful comment.
The video was so good I watched it again. It struck me that in 50 years that anvil will still look great. I wish I could say that about me lol.
Another great restoration 👍
thanks
Tip for you with the liquid bluing. Get the metal hot first with a heat gun or torch and blue it like 3x. Finish it off by applying a light coat of motor oil to the blued surface when done. It will come out looking like a hot blued gun barrel.
Reheating between bluing applications?

Nice work, I think even with the beautiful restoration of the anvil, the base is twice as nice!

You should check out my mechanics. I really like this channel, but it comes in as my second favorit to my mechanics. He's just so impeccable that all of his work is just mind blowing. I'm really excited to see hoe Meine Mechaniker improves in the future though!
I've seen a lot of anvil restoration work, but yours is superior. Congratulations.
It's better now than when originally made! Well done!
Fantastic job done ,I like the way you painted the horn ,looks factory like that. I would love a surface grinder!
Thanks 👍
Well Done!!
That's a gorgeous piece of museum art you created!
Congratulations on finding and restoring such a lovely anvil and finding such a nice block to mill and mount it on. It looked beautiful and loved the attention to detail. There's only a couple of things I might have changed, as others have mentioned. Welding the metal bands to hold the block together for centuries and leaving off or taking off the adjustable legs so as to distribute the force evenly to the floor, rather than those four small points. It's what the big block it designed to do. I'm sure you'd manage that with the same care :) Beautiful craftsmanship otherwise and a pleasure to watch. I watch too many that don't pay attention to the little details like you and a few others do. Kindest regards and thanks for the upload.

Now i gotta look for a 100 dollar anvil. Im getting my forge this christmas. Cant wait for it and to start forging on my own and learning
Thank you for posting, I learned so much !
must be for display only that stump wont last in a forge over 30 days the feet will be driven in the top will covered with burns its a waste of time to a smith
see by changing your point of view. then you will understand what is happening.
Amen
Very nice work, indeed! A bit of an overkill for a shop anvil, but nice to look at.
thanks sir
