2023 Nissan Z vs Supra feat WRX, Miata, Veloster N, F-Pace SVR - Jason Cammisa on the ICONS Ep. 07

2024 ж. 16 Мам.
1 753 144 Рет қаралды

The ultimate review of the 2023 Nissan Z, including a track battle with the Toyota GR Supra and SCCA Hall-of-Fame race car driver Randy Pobst!
In this episode of ICONS, Webby award-winning journalist Jason Cammisa shines perspective on the New Z, comparing it to the original Datsun 240Z, and then taking us on a journey from the traditional sports-car to today's car of choice: the SUV.
With a Supra vs Z lap battle - complete with Streets of Willow lap times set by Randy Pobst - an impromptu drift-off, this is everything you need to know about the new Z.
Including why the original Z was such a big deal - changing what the term "sports car" meant, when it replaced the typically British two-seat roadster.
Bob Ross blames wage stagnation for sports cars becoming bigger, heavier, and more practical. As we move through the decades, the hottest cars then went to Hot Hatches and then Hot Sedans before now landing on fast SUVs.
The Mazda Miata is the only "British roadster" left. And it's brilliant.
The Hyundai Veloster N is the best hot-hatch money can buy.
The Subaru WRX is the hot sedan for everyman with baby.
The Jaguar F-Pace SVR is The Fun One - an SUV that does what SUVs should never do. Including sound like a NASCAR.
And the Z and Supra? They have just enough practicality to be usable daily drivers, but remind us that looking good is never going out of style.

  • This is the BEST piece of automotive journalism ever. Filming, Editing, and Content. Camissa, Randy, and Derek have succeeded the Top Gear legends at last. • As a 30 year old car guy, I can look back at my car history and clearly see how accurate this video is. As I've gotten older, I've gotten more 'efficient' and focus more on value over fun which is really sad to see. I started with my first car at 16 being a 300ZX, switched to an R34 Skyline at 19, moved to North America at 21 and made the sensible, practical choice of a Mazda3 hatch when restarting in a new country. I couldn't stand being a car guy without a car to be proud of so i picked up a 370Z at 25 and after a few winters with snow i made the change to a WRX STI at 29. Each 'upgrade' was carefully considered and I was always chasing the best bang for my buck but looking at it now, it was almost always the fun that was compromised in each transition for more function and utility. Getting older sucks because it's a necessity to think about the cost instead of chasing what we really want, fun.

Technical tour de force, on all new platforms in many cases and usually bettered their USA & UK/EU competitors especially where price, performance and features were concerned. 90's RX-7, 300ZX, 3000GT and Supra were king of the performance hill. My previous comments about the USA $ value ratio remain though. In many other markets, the rising value of the Japanese yen meant these cars were high priced and sold in relatively small numbers denying access to a broad market, great shame.

    • Agree, but there's one HUGE factor Jason missed: traffic. The biggest reason enthusiast vehicles are changing is because the roads are clogged. There are fewer and fewer places to enjoy a pure sports car. A SUV (or a truck) is much better sitting in traffic or in the suburban grind. Even if you DO get out on a mountain road, chances are you'll quickly get stuck behind someone who won't pull over. Look at road traffic volume from the golden age of sports cars to now, and you'll see why there aren't many left.

    • @@wilsonmpesha904 Yes, to a degree. You cannot compare the budgets and the platforms for which each one is thought. I loved Clarkson's Top Gear as well: the trips, the challenges and everything, but KZhead videos are created differently. The image of the cars was most of the times the center of Top Gear, but here, even though we appreciate the looks as well, we are getting something else. Something that Jezza gave every time he could (a grater picture of a car and context), but that was lost overtime. Jason, on the other hand, is obviously researching and interpreting a very big picture with different intelectual perspectives. He writes, if you will, not in a very car enthusiast purist way, but in a more informed holistic way.
