    • An Americal friend once asked me to watch a webcam from Ocean City, MD. He asked me if i noticed anything....and I hesitated to say: I see a lot of overweight folks slowly moving towards the beach. So I came up with some polite things. And each time he said, "anything else...? Don't be afraid if it's negative..." He meant the obesity. You don't see that many obese people in Germany, so it strikes you instantly. He was relieved I saw it as well.

    • The trick is to put stuff like cucumbers and apples in between since they have to weigh them first or something made of glass since they are gonna be much more careful with that. Or e.g. egg cartons because they have to look inside to check if you're smuggling something. It forces them to slow down enough for you to have enough time to put your stuff away properly.

Years ago, while visiting Schwäbisch Hall, I got stuck on the outside of the canvas wall they had erected to limit access to the main square. Must have been a concert or other performance taking place. I climbed under the canvas, trying to get back to our hotel or where my family was dining. I was greeted on the other side by two workers who probably thought I was trying to enter without a ticket. I pointed in the direction of where I needed to go and said the German equivalent of “my mommy and daddy are there.” They laughed hysterically and waved me through. The no water thing was an eye opener to me as well. I don't know how the entire country is not dehydrated all the time. LOL.
