  • We live 3 km from the German border in the Netherlands and we love to go there. I would be very hard to find better neighbours than the Germans. And its indeed an beautifull country.

  • As a Dutch guy, I really had tears in my eyes when seeing the reaction of your mum being for the first time in Europe in this beautiful place like Schwabisch Hall with his fairytale scenery. And really it looks like a filmset, but as a European I know better. Our neighbour Germany is a beautiful country and special the South of it, it's always a pleasure to visit them.

    • That is absolutely true. I was born and raised in Cologne. I recently moved to a new home with my wife a little outside of Cologne ins "Bergische Land", and for the most part it is absolutely stunning, how beautiful it is here. Old towns, a lot of countryside, stables, etc. It definitely helped to appreciate the beautiful spots in Germany more again.

Fun fact: Around 4:06 to 4:08 you are passing a little blue sign on a post, with a yellow shell on it. That means you have been walking on the "Camino de Santiago", an old and famous christian pilgrim's road, which stretches all across Europe towards Santiago in Spain. Maybe you felt a bit of its magic there, too. Cheers! :-)

    • That kind of is the 'secret' behind the popularity of "Americans opinion on german (this and that)"/"Americans first time (...) in germany" - Videos. Even though we know our country the best, there is a certain honesty and truth to every and each one of these videos of that type, because living here, you'll never be able to experience the "first expression" of germany. I guess that's fascinating for everyone: Getting a diffent perspective on your surroundings. Furthermore it is nice to hear nice things being said about our country, because foreigners, especially americans, usually do not save on amazement and compliments about it. Understandable! Germany is great, but we germans tend to concentrate on what we are doing wrong, what is imperfect, being unsatisfied with politics and this and that. Thus such videos serve as a little reminder sometimes, for what we have and how good we have it. And sometimes it's even the littlest things. I assume that is the reason why we like videos such as yours, Hayley, as much.

By the time she got back to Florida the airport was still shutdown and by the time it was back up and running, Airberlin cancelled her flight to give her a new flight a month later. Which basically never came to be because they were bankrupt and just stole everyone’s money and never actually flew the day they said they would. This year I went to visit her for 4 months and she promised in 2019 to finally come visit me in Germany. I will cry on camera..... seriously. Such a very important part of my life, because my mother does not understand WHY I CAME TO GERMANY.

  • Great video with your older sister, Nick! It still amazes me to see a reaction like "it seems like a fairytale or a movie set". I guess to Europeans it's so normal to have old city centers with old buildings, cobblestone streets, terraces in front of the restaurants and cafes. That's how towns are.

  • Absolutely love your videos. You are a Good Son! HA! I am 71 and I grew up in Germany. My step mom was German. I haven't spoke German "for real" since 1967, when we came back to the US. (My dad was military and I was in Germany from age 3 until age 17.) I am amazed by how much of the German language that is still buried in my memory. I am planning to visit Germany and Ireland in 2024, as my wife and I celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary. She lived in Germany as well, in the late 60's. Her dad was military too. Keep up the great video work.
