  • One day the waves were weak like this and I decided to just chill and ride straight but let my board follow the flow of the wave - let it be carried up the wave (without turning), and let the lip throw it out and down again, so that - if you were to look at it from the direct front - the board would be doing a full rotation round a clock-face but facing nose-on to your eye the whole time. There was something so charming about riding like this - letting the wave lift you and throw you, rather than powering all over it - that the memory never left me. I think if you vary your style from time to time from slashing turns to a gentle flowing with the wave, it will benefit you with a quiet joy. It returns you to the initial fun you first had. It's not all about how well you can surf. Before this, it's about the wave carrying you. I hope whoever reads this tries it out - you won't regret it.

    • Exactly what I was thinking. I'm 60 and have surfed for 45 years and still on 30-35 litre short boards. I think a lot of surfers get carried away with trying to pull off a powerful progressive turn with every chance they get but at the expense of feeling the wave. Probably due to the professional surfing scene over the last few decades. Yeah I'm getting old but I find hacking the shit out of a wave gets a bit tiring to watch after a while.

      @wavester46@wavester4620 күн бұрын
    • @@wavester46 Exactly! And there is also something charming about watching a surfer who flows with the wave. Even if he pulls manoevres it's more like he's dancing with the wave than overriding it - choosing what he does to complement the wave. At the risk of being called a simp - but I have to call it like I see it - Kale is such a surfer. It's a joy to me watching him surf because of this quality, whatever it is.

  • Used to live 30 min from Tulla and was a foundation member. Surfed it close to 100 times. Yeah they are smallish waves but definitely lifted my surfing cause it’s hard to surf it good. Have to be on your game with the lack of ocean power. One awesome thing about the pools is being able to surf after dark on a weekday. It’s surfing but not as you know it. On a glassy sunset evening it’s pretty amazing when those waves start pumping out. Live by the ocean now and only been back once in 18 months.

  • Currently working on a video to explain how wavepools work technically. It's interesting to note that the waves at Sydney are different to Melbourne given the same technology by Wavegarden. The two causes i could think of: 1. Different concrete levels and surfacing under the water level which would impact how water is being displaced 2. Completely different coding structure in the computers that generate the wave sequence. Super keen to get down there in afew weeks! 🏄🏽‍♂️

    • It’s mostly a bathymetry difference :)

      @KalesBroccoli@KalesBroccoli20 күн бұрын
    • @KalesBroccoli Yeah that's the most likely scenario for different waves. Something I think you're spot on with is that this may be intentional by Sydney to create East Coast type waves, as they could easily just tweak the speed and frequency of the generating modules to create a similar wave to Melbourne.

Having the waves different (Although not overly different) attracts surfers to what they would prefer at the time. Well done URBNSURF, wish I could surf there more often.
