  • Ideally I should film an extra explanatory piece for this video, but I don't have time as I am in Monza right now. I would like to address the overheating issue and my role/responsibility in this. With modified cars or old ones, I monitor the temperature closely, even if the GoPro is blocking the direct view, I would peek over it to double check. Modern cars have plenty of safety features that would throw a big warning and reduced power mode to avoid any danger (happened on a Gen 1 Audi R8 last week actually, which you'll see later). Let alone a STOCK car should be able to handle it flawlessly. That the car only went in limp mode at over 150 degrees kinda blows my mind. The engine stutter was clearly due to low fuel because on the second lap when we reached 150+ again, the car performed without issues. After watching the video back, I think the car had a faulty thermostat, because the water temp kept rising uncontrolllably past 90 degrees. After the first lap by the way, the oil was changed at Milltek and checked for any damage - all was good. Also if the passenger/owner saw the oil temp hit over 150 himself and didn't say anything - maybe those temps are normal, I'm not a Honda expert. All of that aside, we can clearly see NO WAY the record car was running the same gearing and maybe the boost levels. My corner exit speeds were a few km/h lower due to cold tyres and simply lack of seat time, but the final speeds and revs/gears were massively off on high speed sections such as SX, Foxhole and Kesselchen.

    • Suprised on seeing 150 degrees oil…BUT if the oil was checked afterwards (proper checked, oil analysis not just visual) and it’s good then all good. I’m pretty sure that Honda engineers have tested the car on similar conditions, and if the didn’t set the limp mode it will be for a reason. I’m actually more surprised to see water temps of 120 degrees…maybe the sensor isn’t right as you say.

  • I used to be ICE reliability test engineer, for a french manufacturer, and i especially worked on the engine that goes in the back of a little car named AS1... The worst case taken into account for the engine design/conception, is 110°C coolant temp and 140°C oil temp, about 400h at max torque, then 600h at max power. Honestly, it is often the test that goes the most well without any issues (more problems came from the bench itself instd from the engine). At such temperatures, no ECU derating must alter performance, it must be the same as what the advertising shows. Another test consist of perform an "overheating" endurance test (100h which represent the worst customer case and/or a bad thermostat and/or in desert with high altitude (low air density/less cooling performance)), to then set the maximum torque the crankshaft bearing can handle (to go until the failure is part of the test, it is a result). So to get back the Type R, above 135-138 oil temp and 110 coolant temp, the FL5 has started to derate its output, by 20-30%. Before the fuel cut, no mechanical damage should appear (well you may have half of the power output, but it shouldnt fail). The most risky is to "break" the oil film due to low viscosity, as the dimension doesnt change (low scale regarding the oil visc), the more the oil is hot, the less the oil is viscous and so the pressure (can goes until 10-15bar, to fight against the combustion pressure that push the piston/rod to it) between the crankshaft and the bearing is low because of the highest leakage flow on both side of the bearing. Anyway, sorry for my english, hope it lights up some of you :)

The mr16 and mr18, or the k9k since several years, are very good. But yeah, that's very frustrating to see that not every cases have been "enveloped" by the 2 years of testing, or that ROI is more important than reliability in some cases.

    • @@ahokai I believe the air filter doesn't help at all. The front face of a car has done millions of calculs and tests to ensure the air flow allow to dissipate the heating power into the radiators, even if A/C is on, even at slow air flow, even at full load, even at high ambiant temp. So clearly on modern cars avoid to modify any air flow that goes into air filter or front bumper, or ensure no element will see its needs in air flow reduced by the mod.

    • What about piston and block clearance due to expansion? I remember Alpina H1 engines that blew because of too high operating temperature and too low oil viscosity (piston would grind inside the block). Im my mind there's no chance that an engine operating at those temperatures would go for 200.000km.

      @ilfordino-fordfiestatutori8725@ilfordino-fordfiestatutori872511 ай бұрын
    • @@ilfordino-fordfiestatutori8725 of course you're right! But it is simply characterised on test bench, and previously calculated (easy now to know how expends a piston regarding to its material composition, as well as the cylinder block). But now you'll have knock or rumble before having any "hardware" issues. The power derating on coolant temp criteria, will come before because of knock on petrol engine. I've never seen any clearance issue because of high coolant temp (between 2015 and 2022). But rumble or knock very often on not fully developped map. Even head gaskets are so strong now. I guess because there have been big improvements on materials (dilatation, foundry process, alloys, and of course gasket quality).

Nowadays building a economical car for commuting vs track car are so different recipes that it is very difficult to do both. Then again, like adding super big water to air heat exhanger and manage the flow with flaps could be good choice for track cars, though haven't seen many such being used (maybe with BMW?). Also, in lots of modern cars they run these eco low viscosity oils from the factory for fuel economy and emissions reasons, my nd2 came with 0w20 oil for example. That's like water. Imagine that at 150c, it'd be completely worthless. Also do keep in mind that in most cars, oil temp is a calculated value. This car might or might not have a real oil temp sensor.

  • I took my stock FL5 round the ring last week and whilst I didnt push like you are capable of I did do lap after lap. I never saw temps that high so there is either something wrong with that car or some mod has done it. I assume he put the ECU back to stock as at the start he said he lowered the boost back down. If however it had a map on it still then I would be questioning that or there intercooler. You need to do it in a stock car really to get a true opinion. I find it madness that he is sitting there smiling and saying its the best lap he has been on when his oil temp is 150c. Also in there own vid they don't even mention it. It's edited out. I WOULD SERIOUSLY BE UPSET IF it was my car. Also side note. It was in MPH at the start... how can you drive across Europe in the wrong measurement unless you don't care what speed you are doing. Gutted you did this in a FL5 that was modded and made worse.
