I don't have the head for engineering and it just makes my mind spin when I see folks who can visualize a creation and all of the little components. 8:16 is a perfect example. Every indention, spring, and fastener is there for a purpose, and his statement that he just "came up" with the design blows me away.

  • @StuffMadeHere I have an idea for your .27 cal pencil sharpener. First you need to vent some of the gas off. Second don't try to force too blunt objects together and expect a sharpened result, in other words try you can't just compress the wood on the pencil. Try the sharp angle on the sharping end again but this time try to not only cut the wood instead of compress it, but also give the cut off bits somewhere to go. I wish i could leave a diagram in comments, but generally if i were to try to build this i would vent the gas off at the same place the cut off bits go. Hope you try this in the future, this video was very fun watch. Keep doing what you do!

  • use the explosives to spin the pencil. stick the pencil into a bolt and explosive fires to effectively tighten the bolt into a nut. at the tip of the pencil put just a regular old pencil sharpener. weld a plate to the outside of the bolt (one edge of the plain co-linear with the central axes of the bolt). explosive to push against the plate probably adjust diameter of the explosive to adjust the effect. also distance from the plate for further adjustment that would be my my solution anyway

  • I made a similar thing to your trailer hitch pencil sharpener. I use this special tool called my hand and a belt sander.

  • As an engineer, I miss seeing the math's, design thoughts, validation, pre testing, etc I hope you'll remember us nerds now that you've gotten huge! EDIT: For all of you saying there isn't much technical work for some stuff.. I think you either haven't seen his previous works, way of approaching things and work flow. Even the simplest things he does has huge amount of technical thought behind them. I suspect maybe due to his background that likely may have required deep technical evaluations for every step of the way to making the printers he worked on.

    • tbf I doubt there was as much of that for this project, since it's just pencil sharpeners and there's far less that can go wrong

    • I could see it being a good challenge for engineering students. Not inherently that complex but as complex as they choose to make it. I still can’t believe the road one worked. My favorite unnecessary challenge has still gotta be the one to create the least convenient UI input methods. I think its just on reddit tho

  • Imagine a classroom with a model train track that has sand paper down the middle and any time they need to sharpen a pencil they lock it into the train, turn it on and it runs the whole track. When it gets back the pencil is sharpened.
