How hard could it be to make an unpickable lock? Turns out pretty flippin hard. After I recovering from the mental and physical turmoil of getting this thing made I called up a locksmith to see if they would be able to pick it. A fun time for all involved.
This is a really interesting project that shows promise. It's always fun to see what happens when fresh eyes look at a problem. Shane and I just talked, and he'll be sending an improved version my way once it's ready. I look forward to seeing if I can come up with a creative approach to cracking this nut.

this could be a great design to sell the patent for. However you need to remember to make it out of very sturdy parts and have it also surrounded by very sturdy material in case of brute force attacks. Or just simply cutting away all the material around the lock because its too hard haha.
if ur gonna damage stuff u might aswell go for the door hinges
Battery powered angle grinders exist, these locks are obsolete at this point
As he says, the lock isn't commercially viable. This is because each lock has to be individually made to match the key. With a conventional lock, you only need to replace the pins to get it to work with a different key.

This video is fascinating! I love how you are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible. It's amazing to see how far technology has come in the field of lock making. I can't wait to see how the Lockpicking Lawyer will tackle this challenge. I also agree with the suggestion to engineer the entire door in v3 to make it even more secure. Keep up the great work!
It is interesting philosophically that most of your projects are designing something to do something. The challenge of this is you’re designing something to prevent someone from doing something. Anticipating and overcoming all possibilities is extremely difficult. The former only requires finding one way that works.

Hey there Mr. Stuff, since watching your video years ago I’ve been designing a lock mechanism that accomplishes all of the goals you had in the design of this one. I finally had my eureka moment a few weeks ago and have designed the lock in Fusion. I’m currently working on saving for a patent and I’m hoping to manufacture it to sell. If there’s any way you could help me build a functioning prototype in metal (as a 3D printer can’t make small structural parts) it would be an immense help. I hope whatever project you’re working on isn’t too frustrating. Thank you for the inspiration behind what I believe to be my most practical invention yet.

I think this lock wont be hard to pick if a key without the upper part is fashioned just like the one lock picking lawyer had. Essentially, the design is amazing but the locking mechanism should be set to lock the pins not based on the insertion of a key but rather based on position. If you start to rotate the cylinder, they lock up in place and then you cant have access to them when they meet the barrier and it would be the perfect unpick-able lock. In this design if the back of the key insert is pressed then the lock becomes just like a regular one as you can access the pins while it is rotated until the barrier(even if just dropping them one by one by pulling out the key like lock picking lawyer did). Although i may be missing something i think locking them by position both allows for the locking mechanism to work and ensure that at the barrier there is no access to the pins. Respect to Shane for coming up with such a cool design.
