    • There's a natural winnowing process, you know? Some beliefs tend to be more compatible with whatever society they're in, whereas others are more fringe. Over time the fringe beliefs tend to fade, whereas the more compatible ones tend to kind of combine and conform. Evolution, basically.

      @mahatmarandy5977@mahatmarandy5977 Жыл бұрын
    • @@mahatmarandy5977 I'd say it was less about evolution and more about what the rulers and church leaders at any given time decided was "in" or "out." The Gnostics were critical of proto-Orthodox teachings; and by extension, critical of the leaders and power structure associated with those teachings. From a basic political standpoint, it makes sense that proto-Orthodox leaders would label Gnostics as heretical. People did hold deep beliefs. But we should not ignore the power games played in the upper echelons of any number of faiths.

As it was not written in the same times as the Old Testament nor the new testament. Could very well just be a fanfiction of the time period using the names/characters of Biblical origins. I imagine a lot of people wrote stories about the things that were culturally popular at the time. The Bible was the commonly known thing, it was their pop culture.

    @elsasalah@elsasalah Жыл бұрын
    • Interesting topic. What is your reasoning behind it? I would say myth originated in one place and was gradually spread along the old World. It has more sense to me than the notion that all of these myths are referencing the same world-wide flood. I think this myth originated somewhere in the middle east which was a center of domestication and the birth of agriculture. Agriculture was spread through migration from Middle east to many parts of the Old World, and it's not unimaginable that those people/migrants who were bringing the knowledge of farming and agriculture to the rest of the Old World brought these myths and stories with them, which through the next few millenia became for every culture their own distinct flood myth. Problem regarding the flood myths in the New World is that we cannot go back in time and ask native people what is the exact story, we only have stories which were filtered through and written down by the 15th century spanish monks, who firmly believed in the story about the Noah's ark to be truth. That easily could have resulted, and most probably it did, in those monks trying to connect some stories about the floods in the New World with Noah's ark, thus making those stories from the New World seem much more simmilar to the story of Noah's ark than it probably actually was, maybe they were not even remotely simmilar. (mind you that in 15th century there was no spanish-native american dictionary, so much of the actual stories from the New World were highly reinterpretated while being written down and we will never know what the actual story was like) These are not mine ideas, I heard it from several archeologists and thus far it's the explanation for the world-wide spread of the flood myth which for me makes the most sense. Far from saying it's the actual truth, no one can know that, but that's what makes it a interesting topic for discussion.

    • The area the ancient israelites/Judaens lived, known today as levant, back then it was called, Canaan. It was the connection point between africa, europe, and asia all the trade routes go through Canaan. (Hence way Egypt and the Hittites were fighting over that area.) This means goods, people, and ideas came through there all the time. Its less about a real world wide flood, but the melding of different peoples. Some of tells in the old testament were most likely influence by these tales and incorperated them and slightly change them to fit in. People of the bronze and iron age record history different, adding embellishments and literary devices (such as characters) to make theological points. The accuracy of the account mattered little, what did matter was what were they trying to tell you.

It’s no different than there being a plan to martyr Jesus and scorn Judas. If scorning Judas is part of the plan, then having him commit suicide reinforces the appearance of guilt which makes his actions even more scornful and implies he was acting out of betrayal rather than loyalty.
