  • The collapse of the bridge had nothing to do with the maintenance of the bridge. The focus of the investigation should be determining what caused the ship to lose control.

  • Some history: about 212 years ago, the British Royal Navy bombarded Baltimore with their ships in a war with the USA. That Bombardment led Francis Scott Key to write the US national anthem and this bridge is named after him.

  • The shot at 7:08 tells the entire story. Regardless of what was going on with the ship and control of it, that thing just demolished the section it ran into and caused the entire bridge to collapse. Crazy and sad.

  • it's IMPOSSIBLE to stop ship of that size. and i'm pretty sure that back when that bridge was build, they don't anticipated that ship goin to be this large.

    @PGM991@PGM991Ай бұрын
    • Yep, and even these days if they DO anticipate a ship this size they have to build an artificial island to support the pillars to make sure the ship runs into the ground before the bridge, or if that's not possible they just build a submerged tunnel instead. You can't build a bridge to take this kind of impact.

Let the company go broke paying for it. Let the insurance company have a bad quarter. And if anybody died then maybe whoever screwed up should spend some time in jail. • They'll likely get a settlement from the shippers insurance, but that could take years, in the mean time unblocking the funding so it gets rebuilt is going to save more tax dollars than it will cost. The government makes huge amounts in taxes from economic activity, government spending isn't like your spending, some things like bridges can make back more than they cost very quickly. Sad a man that old is sharper than the average commentator.

    @grokeffer6226@grokeffer6226Ай бұрын
    • Smoke is indication of full reverse, after the first power outage. Seems to have lost power at least twice. No fire, ship engines just burn the cheapest bunker fuel and at full power they produce a lot of smoke. Unfortunately in full reverse there's basically no steering control.

    @rampdavidson6397@rampdavidson6397Ай бұрын
    • When they built the old one that wouldn't have imagined ships that big. These days if in a busy port there's only 2 solutions to avoid this, artificial islands to make the ships run aground well away from the pillars, or, if that's not practical due to water depth etc, a tunnel. You basically wouldn't design this bridge this way anymore. In the 70's a lot of other collapses from impacts hadn't happened yet, and in places where they did some still don't let big ships under the *new* bridges and have moved ports out onto reclaimed land.

    @shadowcivilian9942@shadowcivilian9942Ай бұрын
    • They do drop anchor and go full reverse. Power outage means it’s unable to be steered. Even an anchor will not stop a ship like this. Investigation will be into why it lost power and if there was any issues with power earlier, why it hit the bridge is bloody obvious to know how ships work.

      @peter65zzfdfh@peter65zzfdfhАй бұрын
  • They did not stop cars & trucks in the last 2 minutes, that's also false. If you look closely at the camera footage, a truck & 2 cars drove across the bridge only 10 seconds before it collapsed. They're lucky they made it across before it collapsed.

If news or government tried to lie, numerous locals would have call them out. If you don't know, Americans are very open about critizing their government.

    • The bridge itself was 1.6 miles long (2.6 km); those vehicles could have easily been traveling on/toward the bridge before they could stop access. I'm honestly surprised it was just a few cars we saw before it collapsed, given how busy I-695 is, even that early in the morning.

      @MindMapMarvels@MindMapMarvelsАй бұрын
    • You're looking at sped up footage. They stopped cars and trucks entering the bridge >2 minutes before impact, some were still travelling along it in that time, but if you slow the footage to real time it's still clear for a good minute or two.

      @peter65zzfdfh@peter65zzfdfhАй бұрын
    • @@xiphoid2011 There was maintenance workers on the bridge but it wasn't closed. They stopped vehicles from entering the bridge minutes before the collapse (seems shorter in sped up footage circulating) but some vehicles took a while to leave the bridge. They did not get maintenance workers off the bridge in time as they weren't driving in their vehicles. 2 people from the bridge were rescued (one uninjured and one needing hospital) about 6 more are missing presumed dead.

  • Can't take it. Pretty much summed up a heavily laden barge took out one of the support columns of a bridge in Baltimore Hr. 6 people missing. (In the first 3:00.) Then for the dimwits Reexplained by some one w/an English accent. Then for those who take a full 8:00 to become cognoscente enough to realize that the news is on, Explained again "the bridge is no longer up" "And we can not rebuild it like in the movies, it will take time" Then the intellectual approach- inspections would've prevented a giant barge skippered by a cut rate captain slamming into & through any bumper that by shear "luck" has stood for decades from the days when seamen were reliable & paid accordingly. Cutting edge reporting there DW
