no amount of research would have prepared me for adopting a heartbroken cat who was recently surrendered by their owner. it was so sad to watch her do nothing for days and took a lot of patience to get her to open up 🥲 i'm so happy that she is in my life and i'm excited to learn & grow as a cat mom!

A cat that stops eating and hides is a for sure sign of illness. It’s good you took her to a vet. It’s good she’s eating again.
You're not wrong, but it does need the added note that that applies to cats who are otherwise in normal, routine situations; if your cat has always eaten eagerly every day and stops suddenly, that's a hot red flag - if a cat who was otherwise outgoing and confident starts hiding, they're definitely not well... but hiding and trouble eating when a cat has literally just arrived at a new home isn't abnormal. Still the right call to go to the vet! I only want to add that context to not freak out other new cat owners. The first couple of weeks in a new home are always stressful for any cat, and cats never handle stress well, so normal red flags sometimes are 'just that' and you're not doing anything wrong.
hiding isn’t a sign of illness, its only because there scared or just not safe around someone

its like us when we are sick, we stay at the bed all day long and we dont eat

That's what happened with Mia, a cat from the munchkin TV channel, she ate a string, which sadly affect her organs, including her stomach, and Wengie tried many things to help Mia, especially a blood transfusion with Boomba, but that sadly didn't work, and she died 3 years ago now
I took a 3½ year old Male Cat home from a Shelter 6 months ago.. He did not eat for almost 5 days.. I think that is typical for many animals.. Diluted Wet canned food was the game changer.. Still is.. He gets much more water that way also..
Its good she is eating now, also if your cat slow blinks at you she is telling you she loves you and you can do it back to tell her the same thing.
Seeing these conditions as a german who knows better shelters for pets this is just so sad to watch under what conditions these animals have to wait for a new home … Also pls dont buy your pets from stores.

We plan to adopt an older cat because we are in our 80's and lost our first cat Garfield a couple of years ago and really miss him so we decided to adopt another older one!

She seems like a very sweet cat! A tip I can recommend, is to include a cat-tree or cat-grade shelving on your walls! Adding vertical space can make cats more comfortable exploring the house or interact with you. So basically cats like higher grounds and feel safer there. Also, to anyone else having issues with your new baby not eating food in the beginning, i have found that eating in the same location, or even sharing food (obv. cat safe food) can make them more comfortable!
When i got my kitty 6 months ago i was just as worried. Shes a rehome and 2/3 years old. Shes one of the very best things to happen in my life and i cannot emphasis that enough. She always follows me around and is goofing off. I love her so much man and now o cant exist without her
i adopted a small kitten when he just got off from her moms milk and in her first day she was immideately a foodie, thats how we bonded and how i gained her trust. Now shes 3 years old (in october) and we are super close!

Also! If she doesn’t use all the toys it’s normal. Cats have very specific tastes 😅. Notice what toys she likes and she will probably only use this kind of toys. You can never know unless you buy it. This is the same with beds 😀. Also for the fur try the ace to ace ! It’s perfect and you don’t need rechargeable to remove hair 😊.

Bless you for rescuing! Congratulations on your new baby! I once rescued three abandoned siblings (roughly 20 weeks old) and had to socialize them and get them used to living indoors and it was literally one kibble at a time. I was unemployed at the time (newly migrated) and literally spent at least 4 hours a day sitting on the ground, gently pushing over one kibble at a time to make sure they ate and learned to trust me. Rescuing can require a lot of patience, thank you for having that and for taking her wellbeing so seriously. I hope you have many very happy years together!

I also have a grey-white european shorthair cat and she looks exactly like Blue. The face, the shape of her head and the pattern of colours on her face.. It's heart wrenching and emotional to watch this.

Some cats aren’t used to and or don’t like raised bowls. Cats like people and any animal has preferences

That behaviour seems to me like alot of anxiety and stress. She has moved around to so many places in a short amount of time it must be stressful for her :(

My cat is finicky about food. I mix a heaping tsp of wet food in a bit of water to make a gravy then mix in the dry kibble. He eats it all but doesn’t like dry kibble. You might want to try the gravy trick to get her to eat more.
If you’re up for a challenge , you could try making her raw cat food . The video I watched has tons of good info and the cost would be reasonable considering the quality you’d be getting from it. Also , another tip someone had to save money and to keep the cats healthier was to purchase and use pellets from the animal feed store as their litter box. I can look for the video title if you’re interested for both .

Why I would not go to any shelter is because I feel so bad to choose because they all deserve a home so as for me I would contact the shelter and just choose from the picture if possible.
No, the cat adopted you. You will be fine. I have two of them and they are hilarious. Always up to something. One of them sleeps in the bed with me nightly after cuddles and scratches.

For anyone who sees this later, cats want their food in small pieces. If the owner had pulled those pieces of chicken into small bite size pieces she might have eaten them.

A recommend you get a box scratcher like a box and inside there's a scratcher and they can go inside that way the mess is contained cause if they use the 1 like you got it's gonna make more of a mess just to let you know

Good luck! If you have room, a second cat will give them someone to occupy their time. Especially if you're away at work a lot.

Yeah it might be depression or anxiety since a vet treated a deppresion cat which the cat didnt ate for 6 months! Like she would threw up anything which i hope it will not happen to sylvie btw the cat is okay now the cat is all treated and she needs to be more familiar to the home to eat to hope this helps! Number one thing and one thing stay calm okay that kitty cat loves you number two is that if I get really loves you she'll come to you and I love your cat Okay because the cat adoption you way before you. You pay for it and that your cat and kara-lee adopted you okay when she came to you oh yeah that day but I understand that you had to wait till tomorrow to get the cat terrible tragedy with her I just feel comfortable okay just relax and let the cat come to you that the cat does that that means that you're a glitch to get your cat initiate the adoption for you and you later better expenses you and all that with all those Apollo food and that's your cat I mean visit the cats are docufree before you pay for it and then when I sees another show I want to see your keys yet I want to see kitty cats so just going at it with her
Cats hide and dont eat for 3 days after going to a new family, they get really high cortisol with any big change.
If your cat ever has like diarrhea give it canned pumpkin just the plain kind

I had a 9-10 year old cat that needed ridiculously expensive surgery and my current GF expected me to pay for it because it was my cat regardless that it used to be my ex-GF who never claimed it. So I left her in the backyard went to work. When I came home from work there was signs of a struggle and fur all over the back yard. Checking the camera and I saw a coyote go by. No surgery required. 4 months later my new GF moved in and without my permission, she brought home 3 little of kittens. This sappy dame was literally crying that their mother got ran over by a car. Oh no, I thought. I sure know how to pick them right? Then she told me she actually wanted to keep all 3 of them. So I dumped the trash one morning, got on my motorcycle and went to work without closing the back door and now we have one kitten. Perfect! So to keep my girlfriend from knowing my relief, I installed a door closer. When I politely told her no more cats, she was convinced I left the door open on purpose. When I got home from work, most of her clothes were gone. Another bullet missed. The back yard camera showed a hawk and several hours later, an owl snatch both of the kittens. My only thoughts were, how cool... 👹
