Making big tube bender

2020 ж. 25 Қаз.

I needed a pipe bender for my next buggy project, so i built one! This bender wil do up to 90 degree bends without kinking the pipe. I built it from scrap, using only a drill, an angle grinder, and a welder.

    • Nothing wrong with the sponsored ads. Gotta earn a living. Just fast forward. It's a small price to pay. My peeve is the talking preamble ("Just get to it.") and the "Ford Tough/Home Depot" rock music intros. 🙄 That's a waste of time both to watch AND havong to fast forward through. But too true on the workshop gear. I remember about 9 or 10yrs ago a fella titled a vid how to build a wood something (?) for cheap. He had a professional workshop in his dedicated garage and of course he used the equipment to build this thing "for cheap". Wtf? Scrolled down... comments were filled with jeers about it lol.

    • Had makita 12v -06 model. Only reason it had to dust in the corner for past few years was dead batteries. It went trough absolute hell and back from construction sites to being poverty lathe and there was barely any loose in the chuck bearings after all that abuse. Bought new Devalt and chuck was loose after mere two years being poverty lathe for fraction of the time makita had... Makita is alive again, just replaced battery with wires and it runs from car battery in the garage.

  • Fun fact. In the 80s a local Robert Hughes was building a racecar and was upset by how expensive tubing benders were. He decided to build his own bender just like this. He then started producing them and offered the cheapest bender in the industry. 40 years later JD2 is one of the biggest names in the game.

  • Who needs fancy machinery, all you need is a cordless drill, grinder and a healthy dose of creativity, I've done the same kind of things over the years and I have the utmost respect for everything you do, you must go through a lot of cutting and grinding discs, I'm sure you could figure out a way to incorporate a small bottle jack to make the bending process a little easier, the way you made that die was outstanding, love what you do.

  • My dad and I built a 4wd tractor out of an old FWD 4wd truck. Dad wanted to upgrade the transmission from the 4 speed the truck came with to a 10 speed. In order to get the new tranny to mate to the transfer case we needed a shaft to be made so we went to a local machine shop and had them make it. Well that's what was supposed to happen. After about 9 months of "it will be ready next week" dad took what they had start and brought it home and made himself a setup very similar to what this dude is using and cut the splines into the shaft himself. Not sure why the machine shop guy couldn't do it, they had all the equipment and tooling needed to cut splines. Seeing this guy mock that grinder up made me think of it. I don't think dad used wood pretty sure he used steel. Dad was/still is very impressive with a torch. He can cut a nut off a bolt and not hurt the threads. Seen him do it many times. A torch would have saved this guy a lot of grinding.

  • Very creative build and I love how you used simple tools. One modification I'd add is some kind of bearings for the pivot points, as it would lessen the torque required to bend the tubing (you don't have the added friction to work against, and remember, friction increases with force applied). If you don't have access to a drill press to drill large enough holes for ball bearings, then simple brass bushings and some grease also do the trick. All you need is some brass tubing with an ID that fits the steel pivots, and a drill that is the same diameter as the OD of the brass pipe. You could also make some plastic washers for the surfaces of the plates (again, with just a drill and a hacksaw) to further decrease friction. Or if you forego the plastic washers, heating the pipe stock is also a great idea. You don't need it white hot, you can get it hot enough even with a weed burner, a slight cherry red glow is a high enough temp to drastically increase the ductility of the material.

I know what's involved: I bought & tried a commercial unit the same design but with 1/16" inch exhaust tubing it kept crushing down the tube on any but less than 10' degrees bend,I had to pre-pack the pipe using the wet sand method to stop the tube from caving,NZ used to make its own pipe, but know it's Chinese sourced & that's had something to do with it. ? Anyway the process was a pain in the back literally so I took it back - for semi-commercial header building it was too time consuming but you reminded me of the things as a kid I Built out of necessity, cause of import restrictions many Tools weren't avail.Trev New Zealand

  • Pretty cool concept. You might want to consider drilling out the center and using a thicker shaft; that one seems maybe too weak. And if that turns out to be true, then once it's bent you won't be able to remove & replace it without cutting apart your entire creation. But it could be that the small shaft is sufficient and I am just deceived by comparison to the overly robust nature of the rest of the tool.

  • Your die grinding method would have been a great add-on to the downdraft table I just watched TFS build. Great project!

    • Best grinding bench I ever made is the one I have now. 4'x3', 3mm plate 80mm deep bath pan, 10mm open treadboard as the top. Water reservoir as the base, cheap azz water pump. Constant flow through the bath and a magnet trap tube at the outfeed. Didn't want to build it but, after I set my yard on fire, it was kind of a requirement for not sharing the dog's kennel 😂😂

  • Great Video. What an effort. i think had this tool been fixed permanently it would offer you better support and make it more easy. every time u exert this tool moves and u lose out on precious energy.

  • A wonderful project, I like your tool. How about incorporating a hydraulic bottle jack to do the work instead of the manual lever?

  • That music sounds kinda familier lol. Awsome video as always. I might try making this for my buggy because the bender i currently have is more of a kinker than a bender

    • Polish dies w/rouge wd-40 before bending should let slip before collapsing of tube or pull instead of sliding material should be smooth clean.

  • Deserve a like bro for the sheer hard work. And of course the idea is brilliant. If the efficiency is not 100%, I assure that you will get there. Great things start small. Keep it up and ignore the dislikes. They probably can't even draw a bender on paper let alone making one Amazing!!
