Memory : Register & Recall Settings - Total Recall

In this movie tutorial Mark will show you how to save a group of your favourite camera settings and Register them in the camera's memory. These multiple camera settings can then be recalled by simply turning the Shot Mode dial to 1 or 2. Mark will also explain how useful the M1 to M4 settings are (these are saved to a memory card rather than the camera). These can be used to restore your favourite registered settings even after than camera has been 'Initialized' (set the the factory default settings).

  • Thanks Mark, this was very useful. One thing that would be useful for me, is the ability to transfer setting across to several cameras. I own an A9, A7RIII, A7III, A6500 and A6300. I know this method does not work across different cameras, but maybe Sony could make an App, that would be a configuration builder. You could load an initial configuration (or build it in the App) using the card recall system. Then apply these configurations to a template for another camera model (changing what needed to be changed for the different model). Then once you have the second camera configuration you could use the recall method to upload it to the new camera (of have the app be able to do this directly). Sony would jump out way ahead of the competition with this software system builder.

Just change from Manual to 1, and just click to the right and select whatever M function you like. And to go back, just switch from 1 to 2, and back to 1, so you don't need to erase anything. Other users have reported same problem and we don’t know why. Had to reformat the card and set them up again. Good idea to keep a written record of your custom settings as a fallback.

  • Mark, thanks for this and all of your fantastic tutorial videos on the Sony setups. One thing on this video that was not addressed was how to delete a Memory (1/2/3 on top dial). Is there a way to actually delete a given Memory such that all settings go back to a default setting? Otherwise I believe the only way to accomplish this is to go through every setting and override / Register your new group of settings and hope that you haven't inadvertently missed something.

    @craigelson412@craigelson4124 жыл бұрын
    • There are no default settings registered to the shoot mode dial - if you have not registered any memories the camera settings you are seeing are your current camera settings. Just overwrite the setting with a new group of settings if you don’t need a registered set any more.

    @sharksfan2011@sharksfan20115 жыл бұрын
    • The 3 Memory Recalls don't change their behaviour when you switch to Movie Mode so you would have to keep a card in your camera bag that has your Movie Memory settings. I have a couple of old and slow 8 GB cards I use for this. The settings are immediately available as soon as you put in the card or you can spend 2 minutes transferring them over to the camera's 1, 2 and 3 settings.

  • Hi Mark, Hope I am not stating the obvious but I set up my A7iii with Portrait and Action in 1 and 2 as suggested. I then set up other modes in M1 to M4. What I found was that as long as the camera mode dial is set to 1 or 2 it is then possible to use the Memory Recall menu item to select whatever is set in M1 to M4 without copying it to position 1 or 2. It is then active on the camera until you move the mode dial away to another position and does not affect what is stored in 1 and 2.

  • Mark or anyone else please help clarify, when loading/recalling the M1-M4 settings you have previously programmed you can only recall whichever setting you need to the 1 or 2 (A7iii) position on mode/program dial? So in essence, even though you might have up to 4 different setups on M1-M4, you can only utilize a maximum of two on the program dial at positions 1 or 2?

    @ryansones1626@ryansones16265 жыл бұрын

    • When you are saving or recalling a memory you can scroll down to see what settings are being saved (there are more than appear on the initial screen). If the feature does not appear it is not being saved and there would be no other way of transferring this at the current moment in time. Transfers may also be prevented if the firmware between the two models is different.

    • Late model cameras have something called Save Settings which saves all of the settings of the entire camera to a CAMSET file saved to the memory card in Slot 1. I have a video tutorial on this topic.

  • Is there any way to load any of the memorized modes (1-3) to override current setup at P/S/A/M modes? While experimenting I sometimes get to an unusual setup (while working at A or S mode) and when I am done I would like to be sure that everything is back to my defaults. Factory reset is not an option as that's Sony's defaults, not mine.

    @mmmmkkk@mmmmkkk4 жыл бұрын
    • Registered Memories cannot be used to override the PASM settings. On the A7RIV and A9II you can load alternate camera settings from a memory card to reconfigure the camera. If you modify the settings of a registered Memory (1, 2 and 3 on the shoot mode dial) you can then return to the registered default by just turning the dial away from your registered memory and then back again. I rarely work in A or S - only the registered Memories as outlined in my Memory Mastermind video tutorial.

    • @@AlphaCreativeSkills Thank you Mark, yes, I've watched that video as well and indeed that seems to be a good practice to work mostly on the registered memories. At the same time, having a way to load current settings (used with PASM) from the registered memory would be a nice touch and surely not difficult to implement. I hope it gets to my a7rIII with one of the updates :) Similarly to fn menu being contextual to video and photo.

  • hi! after saving on recalls slots 24, 60 and 120fps for video if i change ntsc to pal will the fps change to 25 50 and 100? thanks!

    @ephemere82@ephemere823 жыл бұрын
    • Changing to PAL in the menu will change the choice of frame rates to 25, 50 and 100 to avoid flickering artificial lights due to the power grid frequency differences. You may not be able to register NTSC and PAL to be changed via the Shoot Mode Dial as this requires the camera to be restarted and the memory card to modified slightly - most shooters would not want to risk any previously captured images and movie clips before switching between NTSC and PAL.

  • Thanks Mark - Im a Nikon shooter I still can't get a grasp how you move from video settings to photo settings while using the camera. My nikon has a photo/video switch that saves my last settings automatically. So far I don't think Sony does this - its difficult figuring how the Sony cameras actually function to me. Ive got to admit I want to move to Sony but the menu looks daunting. Im looking at a A7C but still may pluck for a Z6 II just because I know I can use it fast.

  • Thanks for advice.. I trialed the A9II recently and ran into an issue I could not solve as I'm presuming it's an issue that can't be solved to do with memory recall. as the A9 and A9II both have the mechanical switch to turn the camera into AF-C mode along with frame rates both on the dial on the left/top plate this didn't allow these setting to be assigned to any of the C1 etc all other settings could but not AF-C and frame rates which left me baffled as these mechanical switches can be overridden when assigning a button for custom hold set as in this menu you can select AF-C and one of the frame rates. This Custom hold set was great as I miss that feature from my working with the Canon 1dx series and the 1dx series had no mechanical switches to overcome this switching issue.. unless I'm wrong and would like to be if someone knows how to overcome this memory recall / AF-C issue please correct me

    @karlbratby4349@karlbratby43493 жыл бұрын
    • I rarely, if ever, turn my A9 cameras away from AF-C and AF-C can be programmed as one of the options for Recall Custom Hold. I assign a custom button for Single Shooting and AF-S to override Continuous Hi and AF-C rather than the other way around.

    • It is possible to include Exposure Mode and File Format in a memory stored to the Shoot Mode dial with an A9 camera. There must be a problem with either your Memory workflow or the camera.

But I I am going to program the recall buttons. does that mean that every time I reformat my card those are going to disappear or just the ones that I saved on m1 through m4. I can't believe I would have to reprogram it every time I use the camera.

  • Just crazy Sony doesn't have a small internal memory to store these memory settings like other manufacturers do! Save's a LOT of fluffing round. Formatting cards regularly is good practice, but you'll continually loose you memory settings unless you carry an additional card with the memory settings (A7C - one card slot)...
