THANKS you, I was using my A7III 2 year, but never try to go to deep into details how to use it. This is not simple as for me in Sony made. I would preferer to have a direct selection from the menu all the setting and save instead of preset all and than going to save
When turn the dial to 1, 2, or 3, it does not allow me to change the exposure mode. It's stuck on Program. Everything else is greyed out. Any advice? I'm shooting on a Sony a7S III
Never mind. I figured it out. I had to change the settings in movie mode and then save that to slot 1 and now when I turn the dial to slot 1, it gives me manual exposure. I was under the impression that the changes could be made whilst the dial was set to slot 1.
Great vid, Quick question about the M1-M4 options. Could these be saved to a file on a computer or tablet & then re-installed on to a memory card after it is formatted? A pain I know but ,,,
Yes they can. I also keep a cheap low capacity card with 4 memories in my camera bag. I can load settings, eject the card, put in my higher capacity card and and can continue to shoot. Check out my total recall video which goes into the subject in more detail.

I wonder if there is a way to add to custom hold button ability to engage and disengage IS? That would be so extremely useful, especially when you assign custom hold for a perched bird (slower shutter speed and lower ISO) in this case the IS is engaged and override what is on the lens. When when the bird is in flight the custom hold released and the camera goes on high Sutter speed shooting with IS off.
The camera cannot override the SteadyShot settings switch on the lens
Thanks for the tips... not sure if it has been covered but i can't seem to get custom button settings to register within the memory recall for instance for one set i would like AP and exp comp on the jog wheel so select all the options when have the camera set to A then go and save this to slot 1 and all seems fine when turning to 1 but then on another setup, i would like to have ISO on the jog wheel so put the camera toAP as before and change the custom settings to iso to the jog wheel save to slot 2. Seems to save ok but then when move to slot 1 where jog wheel was saved to exp comp it is now set to ISO. seems custom button settings are not saved within the memory recall setup. I hope I'm missing a step but done numerous times and the same thing. Im on an A9ll and dont like using the top exp comp dial, its stiff, sharp and too set into the camera to allow seemless change
Dials and buttons are not included in the Memory Recall settings. You would need to use different CAMSET files to do this. I offer personal setup support over at Patreon.com/markgaler
I own a Sony Alpha 1 and also a Canon R5. Although the Sony is my preferred camera, the Canon has a really nice feature that allows you to modify any Memory setting, and not have to save it. It simply remembers what your last setting was,. I wish Sony would incorporate this option. In my case I use the Memory 1 for 60 frames per second video shooting, and Memory 2 for 120 FPS video shooting. I always shoot video in Manual mode. So when the light changes I need to modify the exposure. But when I switch between these settings, it is a pain, as the Sony goes back to the original settings, and forces me to keep modifying the exposure. Not so with the Canon. Since you have a way to influence Sony, please can I ask you to convey to them the value of incorporating this option. It is an option on the Canon, so if certain users don’t want to use it, they don’t have to have it turned on. Thank you!
I think I would prefer to Save a Memory to override the defaults because I constantly change the camera settings when I have dialled in 1, 2 or 3 as they are default starting points and not straight jackets to my workflow from that point onwards.The Canon workflow would have me questioning where I left off after last using the Memory. My hit rate of 99.9% would be somewhat lower without these saved memory settings. Check out my Memory Mastermind as to why I think the Sony workflow is very effective at enabling the user to never miss a shot.

I understand that you have a different way of working to me, and that is why it would be important to have this as an option, which is the way that Canon implement this feature. That way both your and my different preferences could be accomodated. I assume you understand why I have a valid reason for wanting this feature, and would still request that you pass this along to Sony. Thank you!

It is driving me crazy because I can not find one for the USB type c anywhere. It would be very helpful if you have any info. Thank You
I use Sony's bluetooth remote. I am not aware of a wired remote.
Can you use custom white balance (set from grey card) when using MR? This didn’t work on older models but I assume it has been fixed on the newer?
White Balance can be used in a Shooting Memory on the A1
@@AlphaCreativeSkills I see, thanks for the reply. Happy to hear that. On my A7III I cant' set white balance using a grey card when using on of the memory recalls. Need to exit the MR, grab a white balance off of my grey card, note the temperature and correction down on a post-it, go back to my MR and manually enter the numbers.
One of the things I miss/need badly is the ability to assign custom memory 1-3 like to a custom buttons. In that way one would be able to switch back and forth quickly will shooting. The 1-3 is nice but does not allow for quick run and gun changes. The location and structure of the wheel button makes this option more of a setting change at the start of shoot

@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thanks. The link you provided just leads to your home page…I’m assuming you are referring to the 1-3 custom memory options on the top wheel button right? I’m well aware of those and I’m using those for quite a few years now. However those have several limitations. I will just point out just one. The one issue I’m referring to is the speed of use. When shooting birds and fast pace wildlife in changing lighting and changing pace(shaded perched bird vs. moving pecking bird in the open) you might want to switch from center adjustable small focus to tracking center small. In extreme situations even the a1 has issues tracking the eye. Also some animals are so unusual you want to decide where to place the focus. This back and forth of setting changes, needs to happen in a second. Also sometimes there is a large telephoto lens attached(hand held). The custom 1-3 is just not suited for that. In other brands I believe a whole camera setting can be save to C buttons…

I wish I could have different settings for the custom button layout. I like Backbutton focus for most things, but it would be great to switch the memory over to a custom button setting where I could have it switch to autofocus back onto the shutter button. Oh well..
You can do this by loading a CAMSET that reconfigures the camera in a few seconds (Save/Load settings)

Hi Mark, excellent video and tuition as usual, thank you so much for taking the trouble to do all of these. I am one of your Patron members and have loaded your CAMSET file on my A7CR and have noticed a difference immediately with my photography as a result. I do just have one question that confuses me a little. The CAMSET loaded file for position 1 - Portrait has a aperture setting of 2.8. The CAMSET loaded file for position 2 - Action has a aperture setting of 2.5. I'm using a FE35F1.4 lens and a FE55F1.8 lens at the moment so unsure if I should modify to the lower setting to 1.4 for both those positions ? I assume if the lens doesn't allow that lower setting it would default to the max aperture of the attached lens ? Of course there may be a perfect explanation why your preferred settings for my camera are F2.8 and F2.5 but just unsure and would really appreciate your guidance. Thank you so much in advance.
Hi Glenn - I can give detailed feedback on the Patreon Q&A forum. The Memory Recall settings (MR) are starting points only. If you would prefer to have your aperture set to a wider aperture such as 1.4 or 1.8 for portraiture then use the guidance in this Video to adjust the memory as you see fit. Mu chosen settings are average defaults only. Some will find a wide aperture such as 1. 4 or 1.8 too wide as a default for portraiture, e.g., photographing a head and shoulders portrait of someone with a beard I would start with an aperture of F4 or F5.6. I would watch the 2-hour PAL workflow Patreon seminar to see the instances I change from the defaults dialled in by the Memory Recall. Aperture, ISO Auto Min SS and Focus Area are my three most changed settings - which I adjust quickly of needed when the need arises (Movie button, C1, or rear dial on an A7CR). I have notifications switch off for KZhead, Facebook and Instagram so your best bet for details personal guidance is via Patreon.
Is there a way to customise a button to jump to a MR setting. I was thinking it would be useful to have a MR set for very fast shutter speed to capture fast action and be able to jump to that with quick press of (e.g. AEL) rather than turn dial if something suddenly happened you wanted to capture. Could maybe have a separate one on similar lines in video mode for slow motion
Look into using ‘Recall Custom Hold’ settings that can be assigned to Custom Keys. My CAMSET (camera setup file) sets up three Recall Custom Hold settings assigned to three custom keys - go to Patreon.com/markgaler to find out more.

This might be a dumb question. I want to save my settings I use for Airshows. Shutter 1/2000, F/8, ISOAuto, Continuous shooting and 12 fps. So if I set all that will the camera just default to the other things like my raw file, metering mode etc? So I guess to put it simple. If I program the settings I do on the dial. Will the camera just grab the other settings that are not set where they were left? Thanks Bob
The camera will register most, but not all settings that you have set up on your camera including the file format and metering mode. There are something like 16 or 17 pages of settings that are registered with a memory recall or MR setting.
Is it possible to modify shooting mode in a memory? I initially set my action shoot up as aperture priority, but I want to reset it to manual so that I can control both aperture & shutter speed while letting auto iso sort out the exposure.
No - you have to start from scratch
Personally I prefer the C3 button as a custom hold , I set it for fast shutter speed to catch action . I call it the oops button. (On A9ii and A7r3 )
I am currently using my AF-On button as I am not a back-button AF user. A C3 button (on some cameras) is hard to hold if the C3 button is on the top left-hand side of the camera as this hand would be supporting a heavy lens.
Can these register custom shoot sets be assigned uniquely to the mode dial 1,2 and 3?
The Recall Custom Hold memories are assigned to custom keys/buttons while the MR recall memories are assigned to 1, 2 & 3
Love my R4 and using this option all the time to switch between studio and landscape. the only annoying thing is its not saving every option ex I use backbutton focus in landscape but not for studio but this is not saved and so are others ...
Save multiple CAMSET files to your card so you can switch between a Studio and Location configuration
Your modifying M1 to M3 settings video is excellent with pages of options to modify shown, but I can't find the option I need. I use a Sony A7m4 with Capture ones new app for the Ipad. On menu page 40 of 59 we have the Remote Shoot Settings, I would like to set the Raw+J Save image to Raw only then assign it to Memory M1 - then change the same setting to Jpeg only assigning it to Memory M2. This would allow me to shoot wireless or cable tethered Jpegs only after selecting M2 then tethered Raw only when changing to M1 Unfortunately when I modify the M2 setting it also modifies the M1 setting as well. It looks like the Remote Shoot Settings can not be different on each if the M1,M2 and M3 dial options, is this correct or is there another way to fix this problem. Whenever I need to change my tethering from Raw to Jpeg I have to go into the menu and change these parameters. I prefer to use Wireless small Jpeg tethering because it's fast and less restrictive and save Cable tethering for my Raw files which is much faster than wireless. many thanks, it is appreciated

Its possible on my A1 so should be possible on the A7RV which has mostly the same menus

I have an a7iii and want to change the M2 from aperture priority to Manual priority without changing any other settings . How do I do that? (My setting on M2 won’t allow my speed to go above 1/15th in this mode, very frustrating)
If you change the exposure mode you have to start from scratch

How do I save the aperture settings? Using 35GM + a7iv. Not able to save the aperture even in manual or aperture priority mode. Shutter speed can be saves
The aperture of a lens with an aperture ring must be moved to the A setting for a Memory Recall to work as designed.

How do you modify PASM in active memory slot?
That’s the only setting you can’t modify because the memory shares the shoot mode dial.

I shoot Portraits, action and landscapes in Aperture Priority so not such a problem for me and with three Recall Custom Holds that use shutter priority my workflows are not inhibited.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills it is a problem when you shoot video…not to mention if you shoot in some hybrid mode video&photo…
Because of the physical dial responsible for drive mode and AF mode there is no possibility to set those important parameters in Recall! So inconvenient in A1. In A7RV I was able to program them in. Without this ability the recall is kinda useless: I need to remember to rotate 3 dials instead of one!
This is one of the advantages of Recall Custom Hold memories that can override the drive and focus modes on the dials.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills yes but I really liked you PAL system on A7RV. On A1 if I’m shooting birds and transition now to Landscape to 3, I have to remember to rotate H+ to a L or single. I cannot “custom Hold” the entire landscape shot session.
The extra dials on the top right of the camera (drive mode and focus mode) were much requested dials by sports shooters (who Sony listened to when designing the A9 camera). I would have just been as happy if they had left them off because I use the Memory Recalls to drive 98% of what I do. I now use an A1 for sports/action and something else for everything else.
Lots of videos on how to set memory for 1,2 or 3 but no instruction on how to delete settings for these memory settings
You can't delete these memories without Initialising the camera - you can only overwrite them as outlined in this video.

why is my save settings greyed out
It is greyed out if you have dialled in a memory recall on the Shoot Mode dial.
it is good that there is such a thing as custom modes. but on Canon they are realised so much better.
I hate that when I switch to a custom mode, I can not start shooting right away, first I have to get rid of the menu which appears on the screen. It is incredibly annoying. I remember my setting, I do not want a reminder.

Huge issue for video shooters: Impossible to set a new Custom White Balance while in Memory mode... The "SET" button is gayed out ! It's been reported for years and no firmware update ever fixed it -_-
It's possible to set a new Custom white balance while using an MR Recall on the A7RV and A7IV.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Manual white balanve yes, but Custom 1, 2 or 3: not in the Memory 1, 2 or 3 from the dial mode 🤔 Or maybe you are talking about the memory temporary recall by pressing a button ? (this starts to be confusing 😅) I don't use this function, all my buttons are already carefully mapped 😬 But I know you like it, and I can understand it's relevance in photography

I am absolutely sure why you are asking me here and not sure what 'slot' you are referring to. My Memory Recall settings register the Exposure Mode, i.e. Shutter or Aperture priority.
Why is ISO AUTO Min. SS an important setting? What does it even do? The manual says... ISO AUTO Min. SS = Sets the slowest shutter speed at which ISO sensitivity will start to change in [ISO AUTO] mode. Ok, so why is that important? Because at low shutter speed you try to get much light or movement into the picture, thus.....i dont know....
The camera uses a reciprocal rule in Aperture Priority to avoid camera shake. 50mm and 1/50 second - 100mm and 1/100 second. The longer the focal length the faster the shutter speed. This rule however ignores subject movement, e.g., somebody walking will not photograph sharp at 1/50 second so raising the ISO Auto Min. SS overrides the reciprocal rule.
