    • Right, old stuff. Americans got stuck in 20century. Aircraft carries - a huge target for hypersonic missiles which Russia and China have been operating for a few years already. What Americans have to protect those brand new ships? Upgraded tomahawks? In any conflict with Russia or China these carriers are just a floating mass grave

  • I take it the Carrier JFK is still not (as 2023), part of the USN, although started in 2011, commissioned in 2013 and launched in 2019, it still is not 100% finished. No mention of when it is due to enter service. - is it also to have Drone capability....? very useful and less expensive too.

  • There are a few issue I have. The AIM-260 has a passive radar mode. It would have been nice if they had been able to just use this instead of the HARM. Reducing munitions saves a lot of money and storage and the AIM-260 is powerful. The John F. Kennedy as far as I know still lacks the upgraded deck surface to be able to handle the hotter F-35 engines. The 3rd carrier is supposed to have this fixed and possibly have an upgraded radar suit. It might also have a 300kw Helios laser defense system on it too. The other two will need to be refitted after the 3rd one comes out. The F-16 is just not needed. The F-35 is basically the same cost and fits the same roles... and the F-35 is better in most ways. The PrSM also can be used in the HIMMARS M142. The range is impressive at possibly as far as 1000km. The export version will likely be limited to 499km do to certain treaties. The PrSM uses the same 500 pound warhead and while the pod system for the HIMMARS only fits 1 ATACMS, they can fit 2 PrSM. The PrSM will likely be faster than the Mach 3 the ATACMS goes. The M88 is nothing special... nice but not groundbreaking. Same with the ACR. I want to see the anti ship version of the AGM158D.

    @toddabbott781@toddabbott78111 ай бұрын
    • Are you sure there will be a 1000 km version of prsm??

      @furiouswolf2566@furiouswolf256611 ай бұрын
    • New F-16 model really is an export market aircraft for markets where it's not competing with 5th gen, due to sketchy security of the purchasing nation (Taiwan for example). It's fine for that. But I agree the USAF shouldn't touch it. 4th-gen 'dogfighters' are about as useful as A-10's (ie: not at all on the modern battlefield). Presumably, the HARM would be cheaper than using an AIM-260... but whether it's cheaper enough to warrant the extra logistics/cost or more munition types, I dunno. Good point. I didn't know the PrSM could fit two in a HIMMARS pod. Does that mean the MLRS can fit 4? 300 kw lasers are very nearly "ready to go". Should be very easy to retrofit quickly, just plug & play. Useless in the rain, limited range across surface to low level targets, but very useful otherwise.

      @kathrynck@kathrynck11 ай бұрын
    • @@RobertLutece909 Ah... I guess it was the blast shields and electronics. I was trying to remember back 3-4 years ago. I remember they had to upgrade the Wasp structural support in certain areas for the F-35, but it might have been the America class that needed the deck surface upgraded. Yes the HARM missile has a 150 pound high explosive warhead fragmentation and the AIM-260 has only a 50 pound high explosive fragmentation warhead, but the AIM-120 is much faster at Mach 5 compared to Mach 1.8 and has double the range (200km vs 100km). The US had been testing AIM-120 to be able to fire at ground targets. The AIM-260 is supposed to have a passive and active radar and IR so likely it would just be software upgrades at that point to be able to do a similar mission. It just give an F-35 more options. If it is carrying 2 AIM-260 and 2 Mark 84 JDAM and detects a radar it can not avoid it could hit the radar. The HARM is too large to replace the AIM-260 and would have to fit where the Mk 84 goes. They can also double up the AIM-260 on external pilons, but not the HARM. And with the ability to lock with passive, active, and IR, the AIM-260 is more likely to hit a target and be able to hunt for a wider range of targets. I can understand maybe from a training and logistic purpose, but the F-16 is still $26K per hour and the F-35 is $42. That is not a huge increase in operating costs considering the advancements the F-35 brings to the board compared to the F-16. Maybe as an upgrade to existing F-16 if might be worth it, but F-35 is just so much more capable and to go into a dangerous area a pair of F-35 would likely be able to complete missions that might take 6 F-16 and some targets would just be too dangerous for the F-16. But realistically with a new engine and most of the electronics being upgraded there is likely a lot less parts shared between the variants for maintenance purposes. Just comparing the two. The F-35 is faster with similar payloads, has a MUCH longer range (double without drop tanks... which the F-35 is getting too), the same ceiling, fast cruising speed of Mach 1.2 compared to the F-16 Mach 0.75, can carry about 1,000 pounds more payload (using external hardpoints). If using external hardpoints has more hardpoints... They are even looking to add mounds internally to be able to carry 2 say AIM-120/260 in place of the single 2000 pound JDAM. This would give it a "Beast Mode" of 2 AIM-9x and 16 AIM-120/260. The F-16 can only fit 13, but typically 2 on the fuselage are sensor pods and if it carries drop tanks do to is much shorter combat range, it would usually only be able to carry 6. In air to ground "Beast Mode" the4 F-35 carries 2 AIM-9x, 2 AIM-120/260 and again with drop tanks the F-16 would only carry 2 AIM-9, 2 AIM-120, and 2 2000 pound JDAM. Then there is the 360 degree IR for far better situational awareness as well as the stealth capabilities. The F-16 does carry about 3x as much ammo for its 20mm gun, but the F-35 also has a 25mm gun.

      @toddabbott781@toddabbott78111 ай бұрын
    • @@RobertLutece909 Yes but while it is a 60% increase the capabilities of the F-35 means it can fly missions the F-16 can not and when flying the missions the F-16 would normally handle they could likely send half as many aircraft. With the purchase prices being similar and the cost per hour being only 60% more I would think the F-16 is pretty obsolete. The only time I could see the F-16 block 70 being worth it is if you already have an F-16 block 20 or newer as you can upgrade them to the block 70 and this would save you money. Likely the US arms deals prevent them from selling the older F-16 too.

  • I'm curious why the Air Force has no issue with refitting the F-15 while constantly trying to get rid of A-10's. I think the role the F-15EX could be filled easier than the role of the A-10. The Air Force's argument usually devolves to the "the A-10 is old" reasoning to justify getting rid of it. The F-15 was introduced 1 year before the Warthog.

    @Ecrocken@Ecrocken6 ай бұрын
    • It’s all about $. The F15 is sold to allies and there is still a market for a new modern version with our allies and in our own airforce, where as the A 10 isn’t available for our allies to buy meaning no market and no money to be made off upgrading it where as the F 15 F16 F18 F35 all pay for they own upgrades cause they are being bought by other countries.

    • The primary argument I hear to get rid of the A10 is that is no longer survivable in a modern hostile environment. Modern Jets and Anti-Air systems can easily shoot it down. It can only be used in an environment where our other Fighters have spent a lot of time destroying all the enemy fighters and anti-air. So only when we have complete air superiority can the A10 be brought in. With the advent of man-pads and other small mobile anti-air missiles/systems we can no longer guarantee their won't be something hiding their than will shoot down an A10. The F15/F16's have enough speed to potentially escape these missiles while F22/F35 can't be targeted (though sometimes they can be tracked...still can't get a targeting lock).

    • It's a mix. By example, CVN-79 won't be commissioned until 2025. And the title is ambiguous. These are "US weapons" but they're not all currently being purchased by the US.
