It's amazing that IU released 4 MVs and NONE were alike in any way. Love Wins All is the most visually impressive but Shh made me think the most. Btw, if you took a look at the 4:23 mark (right after the first credit with IU's name) you will see a shop called Mobius Strip - in case you didn't know a Mobius strip is a strip of paper that when you connect end to end and twist you form an endless loop.

It almost likes a mobius,the infinity recycle of emotional injuries of generations between mother and daughter from the perspective of each side. It seems to me, IU picked up three generational singers on purpose to embrace that it is not about friendship and lover, it something more complicated hidden in the mother-daughter-mother relationship. IU is indeed a genius and , her music is indeed likes the music therapy . It keeps me going through the hardest cancer progress and back to the normal status every night.Thank you for your insight reaction.
First of all, thank for sharing your thoughts, even when personal. Being genuine is part of being content, in spite of the uncertainty of other's reaction. Your story will resonate with those in search for confirmation or acknowledgment, although you may never find out who they are. Your feedback helps give them an opening for self-realization and growth. IU really is an artist for thinking musical listener. You are the ideal audience if I may say so. Even though you struggled initially with the clues/hints in the MV/song, I think your identification of mother/daughter bond was right on the money. Your interpretation of "L" and "F", although different from the widespread understanding to mean "Friendship" and "Love", is actually quite on point. The underlying message is not about the actually words but the complexity and the evolution of the relationship. It is not always the same but morphs over time as only you can experience it in its entirety. This is something everyone supposedly knows yet too often ignored or forgotten until the moment of realization comes. Great reaction as always. PS: Yes, "My Mister" is such a heart-warming and constructive drama - true chicken soup for soul.

So proud of her. That must have been intimidating for her at the age of 15 to be invited to sing on IU's track but she did a great job.
this song is so deep on so many levels and I love your interpretation there. I think in general, most people agree it's about a mother daughter relationship, or relationship among women in general. The actress in the MV (Tang Wei) plays the daughter who is coming to terms/understanding with her hidden relationship with her mother (played by IU) as she is grown up now. It's much like your experience with your mum if you think about it. I think most would accept that F means friendship and L means Love, but of course can be up to interpretation based on your personal experience. In korea, mum's lose their names once they bear a kid because they become known as so and so omma so traces of what she used to be as a single woman is also lost along with that relationship formed, at least from the daughter's perspective. Tang Wei actually wrote to IU saying how the lyrics of the song made her wonder about what kind of woman her mum was before she had her. There is yet another layer of having three singers + special narration in this song coming from 4 different generations singing about their experiences most would relate at the age they are in. I would recommend reading more on the IU team starcandy website. If you didn't know already, they are the most reliable source for IU translations since forever and now they have a blog site. I really like your interpretation and I'd like to suggest two more possible meanings of F and L. The first time I heard the song, the thing that came to mind was FL (female lead)... It made sense to me as at first "it's not about F, not about L" and by the end it's "all about F, all about L" as the story unfolds... Also maybe it's implied that the mother "left" the daughter at some point (abandoned? commited suicide?) with the lyrics about her exiting more upright than ever, staying true to herself and remaining a mystery... And then I also thought it might be F (first) and L (last), though the friendship and love theory is also so connected with the undefined relationship we see in the song... And Every time I listen to this song and watch the MV I find new things, new meanings, new possible layers... It's truly so artistic, thought-provoking and incredible... IU really made a masterpiece!

What i read on Twitter theory says L is Love and F i think friend, and mother and daughter relationship is like daughter didn't understand her mother but when she became an adult or mother she finally understood her mother's perspective. And i read that in korea when a woman became a mother she will be called not by her name but a mother of her daughter like iu mom Sorry to my english😂😂

My theory is the mv 'mom' is a red herring that was never mentioned in the song. IU sings of 'She' who chose to exit this world on her own terms. So 'Shh' is obviously Sulli. These years later IU is still struggling with defining her sapphic feelings towards her friend, and she's coming around to finally accepting the (L) word (as in the TV show).
Tang Wei once played a spoiler and sent a handwritten letter directly to IU. This is clearly a song that talks about the relationship between a mother and daughter. Tang Wei said, looking into IU's eyes She said she was grateful that she was able to recall her mother, an opera singer, in her youth whom she had never seen. It is a song that artistically expresses the relationship between a mother and daughter, something that is neither F (Friend) nor L (Love). A mother's heart that everyone knows but no one knows...
My theory is loosely referencing the movie The Age of Adaline (2015) where IU (Adaline) stop aging, so she flee away from her daughter Tang Wei to keep her safe from those who might seek for their immortal secret. Yet IU is discreetly watch out for her daughter while Tang Wei has been looking for her mom all these times until she found someone looks exactly like her mom before her mom left her, not realising that is actually her mom. Not until IU unveiled the truth about her stop aging secret which she hid away in the basement, because Tang Wei now has reach IU age when she stop aging, such fates has fall on Tang Wei now, so IU share the truth with her daughter. And this secret continue with Tang Wei daughter in the future too.
