This will seem like a very oddly specific thing to focus on, but the way Serafine is using the BAR as it was originally intended, “walking fire” with the proper sling and all, is a very nice touch.
The BAR and Thompson were of course used in WWII but also the Korean War in the 1950s, In fact some US soldiers and marines still had Tommy Guns in their arsenal until the M3 Grease Gun took it's role
Came back to this again and noticed that today.
I never knew how fire the end credits were

Hand drawn animation should never go out of style, and this is proof of exactly why.
yess! it's so special honestly
Animation companies these days could learn a lot from this.
@Frogger what cha mean by that?
@Frogger hand drawn art is significantly more expensive than 3D animation 3D animation its much easier to just reuse the same assets in the same circumstances compared to 2D and since colouring lighting and background don't need to be redrawn every time there is a change makes 3D animations much much cheaper than 2D next these guys where not forced to used 2D animation they strictly chose to as it does look better and is more expressive for reference per min of 3D animation it can cost between $1000 to $10 000 but 2D animation can cost between $7000 to $20 000 per min and thats without the luxury that the cost goes down after the first episode with 3D animation as they dont need to recreate main characters or main areas again and can just render the new scene BTW this pilot made 124k in the first hour on Kickstarter
@Joshua G Sadly true. I'm no animation expert, but I do know studios and animators are constantly looking for, not necessarily shortcuts, but easier and faster ways to create animation so they can animate better, animate more, and reduce the amount of money and work it takes to make animation happen. And animation is HARD. It can take months to get animation like what we see here. Imagine doing that CONSTANTLY. Now, I LOVE the animation we see here, and I think it would be great for a film or maybe a comic art style, but for a cartoon series, not so much. They'd have to really downgrade the animation if this was, say, on TV and had a TV budget, but then it would lose a lot of what makes this cool in the first place.

I call this animal with human personification, not the crap furries turn animals into.
@@WitchKing-Of-Angmar you know this characters are practically furries, right? "Furry" is commonly used to refer to anthropomorphic animal characters in general, not just the community around them.
@@duskyjaguar3716 That's cute and all mortal, but do understand that almost if not every single furry has a sexually driven anatomy that none of these characters have. This is harmless, creative, and enjoyable. Most furries are weirdly anime proportioned, sexually explicit, and weirdly thick. And that isn't just some guesswork, it is 100% a fact that you can't try to slip around me to deny.
The use of a stopwatch sound to represent Mordecai’s intense focus is a beautiful artistic answer to the more common heartbeat sound effect.
It really does put it in perspective when he starts counting bullets, counting Freckles' shots. He's keeping his head under fire and thinking cool under pressure. That really gives insight into the kind of character he is.
It also ties into his existing motifs from the comic of gears and clocks.

something ive noticed, people usually criticize the sketch lines you can sometimes see and the final speakeasy scene being ''unfinished'' while i think it just adds to the aesthetic of it being: A: a cartoon from the 1920s B: a dream/daydreaming sequence sketch lines are the best things that can happen to an animation, it just adds to the feel of it being hand drawn by a bunch of talented people.
I dislike the distraction they create but love the aesthetic despite that. So, I'm split but overall in favor of them
This comment is underrated.
@@mitchramey5052 I don't mind it much
The sketch lines call back to the better days of animation. Sure, our technology has become more sophisticated, flawless, and easier to look at. But with it are fewer stories to tell. This is a labor of love, not a soulless corporate product, and every sketch line I see reminds me that this is a real story worth telling.

16:56 WOW. The historical detail is INSANE! For those who don't know, when she says "done in by a scarf", it refers to the death of popular dancer Isadora Duncan who was tragically killed when her long scarf got caught in her car tire. She drove away, and the tightening of the scarf broke her neck. This animation and story is so good. This needs to be a movie.
should sift through the comic if you havent. many pages are just excuses to draw fictional universe-appropriate prohibition-era St Louis with little captions below the page concerning the research she did for it
And more interesting - she was wife of the Sergey Yesenin. And lived in Soviet Union. For those, who don't know about this man - he was famous Russian poet
Another little detail at 12:08 , the M1918 BAR being used as intended, firing from the hip while advancing on foot. Admittedly, it does have far too big a magazine, and was famously bad for sustained fire IRL because of the small box mag, but still, I just love little history tidbits like that in cartoons.

The tail poof when they get scared was completely accurate! My cats have scared each other while playing and it looks just like how it's portrayed during the train passing scene in the graveyard.

YOU HAVE!! Freckle: a timid and quite guy that goes full bat shit insane when he is handed a gun and cares about his partners. Ivy: freckle but has more courage at points and finally rocky, the eccentric, violin playing, explosives enthusiast, but he's just eccentric and sometimes looks like he is on the brink of collecting all the fire and TNT in the world and just blowing it up to cook a batch of smores.
dang, animation is smoother than piece of butter
this is my favorite indie animation EVER. the way you guys managed to create half and hour of pristine, consistent, high-quality animation with amazing writing, voice acting, and choreo??????? you're an endless inspiration. it reminds me somewhat of who framed roger rabbit, and that's saying something bc that's one of my fave animated movies period
You can really see the difference between a product made by a company and a project made by people.
and to be fair the animation and story for this one is better than most companies art
must be why the lackdaisy property has a copyright notice
Yeah, companies do a better work
@@X-3181 Do they though?
I love all the voices and animations for this so much
16:24 I love that the Villains are just having fun. No seriously in how many animated Series have you seen the Villains being so amused after they lost. It's genius
Jesus loves you! :)
Nothing is better then the evil people liking what they do. It adds to the role

You know they love when their prey puts up a fight
The orks from Warhammer 40k come to mind.
50 seconds in. A CAT in a ZOOT SUIT!! 🤯 Brought a tear to my eye. I'm hooked already!
I love how u can still see the hand drawn animation
This is so unreal, to think as a young amateur artist I recall seeing Lackadaisy artwork on Deviant Art over 10+ years ago, and now an animated pilot of it all the same. How incredible!
Back when DA was an actually good website!
As a history nerd, the mention of the death of Isadora Duncan in the newspaper caught my attention. Trivia detail well done!
I went into the comments to see if any other dance nerds had noticed the part about Isadora Duncan, and found an unexpected friend. insert Gimli and Legolas meme with dance and history buffs, respectively.
If you read the comic there's a lot more stuff like that. The writer does a lot of research. :>
@@ChrisD__What comic? Is it complete? where do I read it?
@@winnielynnieits in the description
I’m more impressed with them using “torpedo” as parlance for hitman. Something I only know from reading old comics set in the 20s
This needs to become a real series. Like hazbin hotel or helluva boss. Lackadaisy has so much potential.
7:35 if you put your hand in the middle of freckles face, you can see that he manic grin on the right, and a worried face on the left. I don’t know if they meant to put this in but pretty cool detail!
I can’t get over how appealing this animation is. It’s got such a fluid, expressive and authentically hand drawn feeling to it
I dunno if the rough animation linework being occasionally visible was international, but it’s nice.
Rocky seems like the type of guy to unironically wield a sword and everyone thinks he doesn’t know how to use it until everyone is in danger and he actually is a master with it
And then he trips on this violin and fucks everything up.
That would fit perfectly for rocky
I think he'd be more like a guy who doesn't know how to use a sword and is accidentally good at it
@@welp9356 I can also see that
he brings a sword into a gunfight and still manages to win somehow... lucky devil
Who else is re-watching the pilot on the one-year anniversary?
Yup
Absolutely stunning this is... I find myself coming back to this almost every time when nothing else on KZhead is doing it for me, creative inspiration, or absolutely incredible background noise, (that I usually find myself getting rightfully distracted by.) There's nothing not to love about this. A grand well done to everyone.
This pilot is going to break the internet hopefully as hard as Hazbin Hotel and I personally CANNOT WAIT
I can imagine a similar Energy in this and vizis work. Lighthearted humor, między innymi with some action, thrill, sometimes even drama
I hope so! The internet needs more freelance original content!
Rocky has the same voice actor as angel dust
Jesus loves you! :)
@@e_s.0848 Uuuuuuh cool. Unfortunately most of the people who told me that when I was a little nugget have now told me that Jesus hates me 'cause I'm a transformer, but alright
Watched this three days ago as a complete newcomer who had not even heard the name Lackadaisy. Went on to check out the comic. Now I'm watching this again as a die hard Lackadaisy fan
Welcome to the fandom! We have pancake night every week, byos. 🥞
Same here, this made my month
SAME I LOVE THIS NOW
same ol tale to tell here bill!
same i watched this pilot this morning, binged the comic real hard, and came back at night as a fresh lackadaisy fan
a year later and it is still as good as the first 4 times watching it
I have showed the pilot episode to my mom. Now, she became your new fan! It's amazing work, thank you!
My absolute favorite thing about this is how they aren't humans shaped like cats, but cats shaped like humans. Their ears, tails and even whiskers are not just limp accessories but as alive as they are. Everyone has sung the praises of every part of this animation, and every iota of praise is justified.
This called character desing done right. Where this is used to be common thing but saddly the main media forget about this. Good thing there is this new animation what gives many animation lover some HOPE
Now I'm wondering where you've seen "humans shaped like cats". Because even the creepy play "Cats" have cats shaped like humans...
@@nicklasveva I think they just mean that they pulled off anthro characters that don’t look uncanny. The cats in Cats were too humanoid and it made them really odd and uncomfortable, they felt more like weird ahh people than cats.

huhhhhh? too much overthinking....
Absolutely Incredible. Well done guys 👏👏👏👏

I don't know why but Rocky was singing a Irish pub song called "Whiskey in a Jar" it is pretty charming coming from bootlegers.
Only took one episode to establish a setting, a dozen characters with clear personalities, and intriguing world building. Please make more, I’m loving it so far!
😮
Thats a good pilot right there
There are years and years of comics already written for this series and they're fantastic, they basically have several seasons of a wonderful TV show already storyboarded and written, I hope they get a real series!!!
@@Trendyflute well ive already read half of them yesterday hahah
@@Trendyflute I wouldn’t say seasonS, maybe one The events in the comic itself happen in the course of what, a week? Honestly the pilot animation comunity was quite dry from 2021-2022 so it isn’t surprising that a half an hour pilot with this level of qualify drops everyone it watching it.
