    • I've had pretty bad experiences with dentists. Losing control of their dremmel and saying "oops" Claiming that my cramps from a mis aligned bite after an overfill are imaginary. Most recently I went in for a filling, while He was doing his thing He chuckled at a punch line on the TV (which he had turned up when he first entered) even the assistant noticed. When i got out of the chair he said to me "I also took away most of the tooth to stop you from grinding" Which we did not discuss at all. I was very stressed for personal reasons which lead to my grinding.

    • BIASED JOURNALISM!!!!! Only 2000 cases against them?! How about close to million happy customers? That's just 0.2% people. Is it really that bad? I am sure the percentage of people not happy with their dental procedures and exorbitant fees is much much higher. Even regular people who go to dentist for their procedures, usually have many complications later on, for which dentists don't take any responsibility either. Not to forget that they charge a arm and a leg for each visit and procedure. Don't fall for biased journalism or sponsored reports. Think for yourself based on the facts and then make a decision. Peace!!

    • Thank you for looking into Smile Direct. This is all a scam. I just filed a complaint to the Better Business Bureau, I'm not sure how this company can get away with this type of service and taking money from people for a product that is poorly made. Shame on them. To anyone looking into this product - far, far away. I had braces before so I know what invisible retainers should be offering in terms of quality for the price. I paid for SmileDirect in full and I am utterly disappointed and in the process of getting money back from the company. The retainers themselves are made very cheaply. Almost every single set I've had has broken. Not only that, but the company has no transparency in the way they run their operations. They are very disorganized and went weeks or even months without replying to my requests or emails. They have also left me without sets of retainers for months in between - so therefore my teeth moved. I finally realized I needed to let them know at least 6 weeks ahead of time before the set of retainers would end, that I needed a new pair in order for them to arrive in any acceptable timeframe, which they won't even allow so you have to lie to them. This product is a scam, if you want to save money get metal braces. I've also had those, which straightened out my teeth very quickly, however these didnt move my teeth AT ALL then I had to be re asset and wait 3 months for the second shipment and when received them the material is cheap and poorly made. the alingers would cut into my gums and cut them. by then my teeth had moved. When you call to complain all they keep asking you are for pictures, eventhough I have tons and did a reassment. I also highly SAY STAY AWAY I DO NOT recommend this product any day. They make difficult to get your refund and speak to a manager. You would think you get your invoice right after they withdraw the money but I have to email 3 or more to get them The media was right this is all a scam and that is the bureau receives these complaints. Disappointed Customer

    • Smile Direct Club is a dishonest company. They commit you to a financial contract when you are filling out the info, but for people who don't know that they get roped. I had my daughter's stepmother take her for a scan. To even get the scan you have to consent. Also insurance doesn't cover their services bc they aren't true healthcare. You need an Rx for aligners. Anyways, I got a call the day of the appt asking for $250 after being told they didn't need payment. I gave them my credit card number and they charged the $250, but I started getting money debited out. I had told the representative I would call him back to let him know whether I wanted to do the payment plan or pay on full after I got the insurance situated. To this day I haven't had a resolution. They tricked the stepmom into signing these papers at the visit and then copy and pasted my credit card number on to the contract. Then when I called to see what was going on they wouldn't give me access to the account saying it wasn't in my name eventhough they had put my card number on everything. It took contacting SDC's attorneys directly. Although I was redirected back to the team lead, but she never did any of the things she had said she would. I don't recommend them based on that deceptive behavior at the beginning. Customer service is terrible. Go look on BBB at the complaints. They are unethical.

    • There are so many things wrong with SDC's process, but to clarify the latest dental research advises against taking X-rays for mild to moderate cases as the benefits outweigh the risks. The problem with SDC is mainly because they treat people that should not have been treated in the first place. The dude who's teeth broke for example had underlying dental issues for sure; aligners can't do that themselves.

    • Adore You most braces aren’t 10,000 USD. You’re in lingual brace territory there. Most braces are between 4,000 and 8,000 USD, which is still expensive. I think the point is to spend $2,000+ on a treatment plan this isn’t going to solve your problems or may even cause harm and the need for subsequent dental work, is worse than waiting and spending the money when you can. Most orthodontists have interest free payment plans as well.

That’s it. No dental assistant should be doing this and the biggest component of my job is to be an advocate for my patients to help them make informed decisions around their health but this company and it’s sales assistants are abusing this relationship for personal monetary gain. We also shouldn’t be in any office seeing patients without scrubs. Any mouths getting open? Scrubs, gloves, masks, glasses/face shields otherwise I could get sick, get my patient sick, spread diseases to other patients, spread diseases to my family, etc. if I were to dress myself like the smile direct club employees.

It’s been a few months now since I completed my treatment and I couldn’t be happier with my smile. I did pay a lot more but that was to treat a genuine case of gum disease that I could tell I definitely had. However, I originally also wanted to get just the top teeth done because my bottom teeth were straight. Over a year into the treatment I began to realize that my teeth were not aligning well and it was difficult to chew. I ended up paying the additional cost to do the bottom teeth as well. My teeth now align with eachother well and I can chew and comfortably keep my mouth in a closed, resting position. I highly recommend that you get more information before signing an orthodontic contract for a treatment that includes only the top teeth. I didn't think of the alignment issue until it came up, and it was a large enough issue that I ended up spending the extra $2200 for the bottom teeth.

Thing is it has to be done through an approved dentist or orthodontist & it's more expensive, but totally worth the peace of mind. After the initial 23 they scanned my teeth again & made 19 more. That's just my case though, obviously every situation is different. Also, I had crowding on bottom so she did have to shave between certain teeth to make room. That was weird lol

  • I went through the process with Invisalign and can't imagine doing it without the regular appointments and checkups as you go. They required me to get my wisdom teeth out first to prevent shifting later, special nubs were placed on some teeth to help the aligners grab on at certain points, and at some appointments they had to create space for the teeth to move with special gritty sandpaper-ish strips. Definitely go to a real orthodontist, it's worth the cost.

I would rather pay $5000 for a treatment and be assured that my teeth are healthy and come out straight rather than take the chance on something that is not CDA-approved. My orthodontic treatment cost me a little under $6000 but I am sure that it was customized to my needs and that I can always follow up with my orthodontist if I felt my teeth are becoming crooked again.

  • I used Smile Direct, and while my teeth weren't perfect after, they were a hell of a lot better after. I wasn't expecting perfection for the price, but it did accomplish my goal of getting my teeth uncrowded enough to floss them and make them look much nicer. I don't have any bite issues either. However, this took 7-8 visits to the Smile Shop and 5 new projections and aligner sets to accomplish an almost perfect smile. I also managed to get most of my money back due to all the issues, so that was nice. The best thing about Smile Direct is that it has provided some desperately needed competition and forced other providers to drop their costs into the realm of affordability for more people. Before Smile Direct came here, it was an average of at least $10k for Invisalign (I went to about 10 different Orthodontists looking to correct my crowding), but I've noticed it is now about $5k. So that's been a great thing for Canada!

    • I recently finished ny invisalign treatment of in total 21 aligners (only lower teeth) My entire treatment was through an orthodontist and I had regular checkups. I think, that one of the differences between invisalign and other cheeper options is, that the glue spots with invisalign act as "brackets" (is that the right english word?) from traditional braces. The glue spots where changed a few times throughout the months to "pull" the teeth the right way. Those ligner in the video are pushing the teeth only by changing the shape of the plastic ligner. They can't for example pull a tooth further out. Moreover, my invisalign treatment came with extensive aftercare. I got a threat behind my theeth to keep them in place and I just went in to make a mould to get another "ligner" to use a couple of nights per month. (This is only because I had braces as a child but with a bad dentist so my teeth moved again. Therefore my new orthodontist want to be 10000% sure that nothing can move. Or if the threat gets loose, I have something to keep the teeth in place until I get an appointment)

At first they said I could definitely get approved so I got a loan just to get these aligners. A week later I get an email saying I wasn’t approved and that 3 orthodontist reviewed my case. • As Specialist Orthodontist, I recommend before orthodontic treatment, you look for these potential issues (your orthodontist will check these by taking X-rays and probing your teeth one by one!! at your first few initial appointments) 1-Any cavity, and restore them, they tend to get worse during treatment (you may need RCT and crown to save the tooth, extra cost!!) as you change the oral environment with fitting braces (or aligners), you need extra care and specific oral hygiene instructions 2-Any RCT tooth, (root canal treatment) they may get flareup, you end up having severe pain and infection, they may need re-treatment (RCT again), you may in the worst-case scenario have to remove them, leaving you with an extra cost of placing implant/bridge to replace the tooth 3-Any gingival recession or thin alveolar bone covering the roots of the teeth [this needs checking the teeth one by one and in some cases, CBCT(scan)], this can lead to more gingival recession, hypersensitivity and treatment for gingival recession is very costly, you need a gum graft 4-Any crown or existing tooth filling, the margins of the crown usually change as we move teeth and may leave you with unpleasant crown margins, some restorations may fail during brace treatment, all these things need prior check-up and care during treatment, which is a part of orthodontist job treating you

Not as scummy as I imagined, but sad that less than 1% probably get to talk to a real dentist. This is a horrible option. There is a reason why it’s cheaper. And it’s not worth it! I’ve had a few patients put their children in this because they didn’t want to do extractions. I pleaded with them not to.... but they don’t care bc theyre saving money up front. But in the long run they will regret it

  • It's not for everybody. I, thankfully, had very minor correction needed. I didn't have any crowding or anything major, my bite was just fine and overall i had great alignment, i just needed to fix the spacing on my front top teeth, and it worked great for that in my own personal experience. I had no issues and am still wearing my retainers 1 year later and am fine. But it's not for everyone, only minor treatment cases. Anything else you want to just go to the doctor and look into actual braces.

    • When the treatment is done for how long do you have to wear those retainers? I just start my SDC treatment few days ago and honestly i can't see any changes, i have to fix the spacing on my top teeth only, no crowding or anything like that. Now i'm really concerned....

  • OH MY GOD. I did a scan at one of their branches. everything was going well, until I told them that I wouldn't want to pay on the spot and that I would like to think about it. She said that I could do a down payment and they'll charge me later on. I said no and IMMEDIATELY, she got so passive aggressive, rude and disinterested. As she continued, she didn't smile even half as much as she did in the first 15 minutes of the meeting. She then creepily smiled and asked "I'm sorry, did you feel attacked?" I was so taken aback by this. My whole visit was also recorded (I gave them consent to do so.) She then asked if I could at least give them a 5 stars review and mention her name so she gets free pizza (the nerve) and I actually did.

    • That's not true. They are actually dental assistants. However, SDC has made their role into more of a sales role. I've done a scan and they don't even stick a mirror in there to check for cavities. No basic double check. It's questionnaire, scan and gift bag and ur out.

  • I started this before they had their little shops set up, I had to take my own impressions and thank god they kept getting denied. I gave up on them because I had to keep paying for new impression kits. I ended up getting traditional braces and in so glad. There are so many things that I wouldn't have realized needed to be done in order to just close a gap or straighten up a tooth. Ya live and you learn I guess. Adult braces aren't that bad 👍

  • For those who are looking for a cheap option to braces-free treatment, moral of the story is to not sign up for anything without consulting your orthodontist first. I currently use Invisalign but I have my orthodontist monitoring the entire process (I'm 6 months in), they know what's best for your dental health, it's not worth the risk of compromising your dental health over saving a couple thousands of dollars

  • I think the most important thing to do before trying any of these online aligners is doing a full checkup with x rays. Also it seems the people they talked to are more like consultants who aren't the most informed, while the ones actually getting the aligners ready are the qualified ones.

  • Thank you CBC for the show! I am a victim of this scam. I agree, SmileDirectClub is really good at online advertising. I have checked their review on google map, it is almost five star. So I went to the SmileDirectClub office at Vaughan Ontario, and I paid $2095 for my son's teeth. Not only it did not work at all, they are asking me to pay another 2000 dollar because the fine print says the initial $2095 only covers the 05 Months treatment.
