  • In the 80’s, bottled water was something new. I visited a soft drink bottling plant in PA that was converting to bottling water. They said it was going to be a big thing. I was skeptical. They told me that all the cost was in the packaging (the bottle), marketing, and shipping/handling. The product inside came from regular water from the tap. The tap water came from wells and could legally be called spring water. It was essentially free. So the profit margins were very high.

    • Well water qualifies as spring water. It comes from an underground aquifer and other than the cost of sinking the well and well pump, it comes right out of the tap at the water plant. Better brands further purify the well/spring water before bottling, which removes contaminants and many beneficial minerals. 45% of all bottled water is pure tap water, from the Public Water Source.

    • 1st the revenue stream developed by a company serving society pays more taxes than you or I by a factor of 10,000 and that is because they solved a societal problem, 2nd don't hasteful in placing blame so that you and I can pay for it through higher pricing and taxes. This is an inconclusive assessment with no verifiable proof of damage to us and you want to react without evidence based on a theory built on fear of suspicion. You know, anthropogenic global warming is also a theory and the evidence continues to prove the theory wrong, short term.. Just so that you know, 99.99% of all "scientifically" published theories are proven wrong over time and the scrutiny of science (science rarely proves facts and mostly disproves theories). Do you really want government to deploy policies based on a theory that has only 1 in 10,000 of a chance of being true? All problems must 1st be identified and then defined before a solution can be considered. Plastic solved many of our problems since its development in the 1940's but there has been some collateral damage as is the case with all inventions that solve a problem. Plastic in our water and extra CO2 in our atmosphere have not caused a health or economic problem to us, yet, but some animals have died from ingesting large amounts of colored plastic and upsets the ecosystem which will eventually affect us but to what level of intensity is speculative. Finally, if we take your mind set to fruition then all inventions are bad as they cause collateral damage and we should cease to progress. That would certainly reduce the human population and we can revert to many different problems we mitigated over the last several 1000 years. so be careful how you lend your power to your government as it may be penny wise and pound foolish in the end

    • my guess is that it would contain more of these things, since the bottled water companies do filter the water from local source. so the best thing we can do at the present is to buy a water filter for drinking water. lol. also, normally the filters filter out the fluoride from tap water (which sort of disinfect the water), so don't drink a filtered water that's been seating there for 2days and exposed to air. the filter is a moist environment so there is risk of bacteria growth, therefore change it often and keep out of warm places. YES, it is complicated to get some safe drinking water! 😅

Microplastics are everywhere and part of the reason is all of the plastic bottles we use for water but even without bottled water we would have microplastics everywhere, including our water. There is a difference between spring water and filtered or "purified (tap)" water. When I open the kitchen tap I can smell a stronger bleach odor than the water in the swimming pool when the pool chemicals are at the right levels. I tested kitchen tap water with the swimming pool water test kit & the total chlorine content was at the perfect level for the pool. The free chlorine content was also at the perfect level for the pool. The PH and the alkalinity were both close to the right amount for swimming pool water.

Also, where do you imagine waste polluting our environment is coming from? I think there are only a couple possibilities: #1: Some people do not throw trash into any bin, and instead litter. This is not a problem fixed by recycling. Let's look at waste that does end up in bins, then. #2: Trash blows out from bins with the wind or while bags are handled, recycling and landfill alike. This again is not fixed by recycling. Recycling fixes resource consumption, but in a lot of cases produces much more carbon emissions than just throwing waste in a landfill. Other than that it doesn't fix anything.

If nothing else, not only tell us about the plastics in the bottle water (which I expected to some degree because the water is in a plastic container which can degrade) but compare it to tap water. The analysis of tap water should be the baseline to which the analyses of all bottle water is compared. Especially since the bottle water is supposed to be "cleaner and purer".

But you can add it to your water. Just add a pinch of Himalayan salt which contains 84 minerals. Is way better than any water and so much healthier you will notice the difference

    • The problem is that plastic is lighter to ship in bulk. I would suggest that it is safer too, but many other products are still delivered reasonably in glass without significant recurring injuries. Even Perrier and Gatorade are now sold in plastic at the same price as before, if not slightly higher. So the whole industry isn't likely to reverse converting almost everything to plastic in the near future. The numbers are just not there any more. Many backs have been saved by moving to plastic delivery jugs for office water coolers, so there is a legit personnel reason for the switch as well. Glass is rapidly receding as a mass packaging material, even in the beer industry. Metal is a pretty good option though. It is a bit more expensive, but the incentive of paid recycling makes it a worthwhile alternative to plastic. La Croix water stands out by being sold in metal containers for decades, but others have recently started regularly canning water as well.

My point is, money is not the root of any evil at all, a person's intentions are the root of their evil or good. Money is an object, it's no more inherently good or evil than a roll of toilet paper or a hammer. So, for platitudes, I'd go with, a person is only as good as their intentions and deeds. A person with good intention that performs a deed that causes harm swiftly rectifies that harm, due to their good intentions. A person with bad intentions cannot be counted upon to rectify harm that they caused. But, corporations aren't individuals, they're large groups of people and large groups of people frequently will lose their moral center, due to the statutory requirement that a company makes a profit to reward its investors.

And the person who lived there said, i tasted chlorine when i first moved here too. But i don't taste it anymore. Guess im used to it, he said. So i ordered a TDS meter. Measures the number of solid particles per one million water mixture particles. Fiji water tests at 120ppm. My home tap water in the country side tested 88ppm. Better than Fiji water.
