We recently switched our 4-year-old dog over from store-bought dog food to homemade dog food and Charlie could not be happier.
This is a great, well-rounded beginner recipe that is easy to make and can easily be scaled up and stored in the freezer. I really enjoy making fresh food for Charlie and hope to share more recipes soon!

HOMEMADE DOG FOOD RECIPE:
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 pound ground turkey
1 large zucchini shredded
1 cup baby spinach finely chopped
1 cup shredded carrots
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1 egg
3 cups cooked rice (I like using frozen brown rice)
Heat a large skillet or pot over medium-high heat. Add in the coconut oil and turkey and sauté until it is browned and cooked through, about 10 minutes.
Reduce the heat to medium and stir in the zucchini, spinach, carrots, and turmeric. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5-7 minutes, until the vegetables are tender.
Turn off the heat and crack in the egg. Let the egg cook in the hot food, mix it around to ensure it is mixed through and cooked through.
Stir in the rice until everything is well combined. Cool and serve!
NOTES
*Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Makes 6-7 cups.
*This is a vet-approved dog food recipe but please note that I am not a licensed veterinarian, and all opinions are my own. Please consult with your veterinarian before switching your dog to a homemade diet.
Happy Friday! I am super excited to share a recipe I have been making for my dog lately! I plan to experiment more - so let me know if you would like me to share more homemade dog food recipes. XO Dani
I'm making this for myself ☺️ thank you
Yes, more please.
Yes, definitely share more dog food recipe, please.
Yes definitely more please!
Great recipe, so yes, more please. I have a fussy dog and she enjoyed it. I forgot the egg and black pepper, but added a bit of apple, parsley and sage. She didn't mess around eating it!
I lost my dog two years ago from cancer. I have thought for a long time now that dog food, like human food, is far too processed. I have just got a delightful puppy recently and I am going start making her home-cooked food. Thank you.
Was reading your comment, sorry to hear of your loss. But was wondering if the pug pic was of old or new. I just lost a pug( i called my lil brother) about 2yrs ago as well. But either way adorable pic.
@@charliesmomma7402 Yes it is a cute pic but it wasn't my dog. I love pugs and liked the photo.

Thank you so much for this recipe. I just made this for my golden doodle and he absolutely loves it! Please keep the dog recipes coming.
our housekeeper has been cooking for our 3 dogs for years. None of them have ever eaten store bought kibbles. we cook chicken breasts, chicken liver, sweet potatoes, then juice carrots, spinach and kale. (much healthier than cooked, and adds moisture as it is juiced). add rice, mix the whole thing up. We make 30 lbs at a time once per week. thanks for the tip on the turmeric, i will give it a try.
Thanks Bro
I love this and believe that an entire channel devoted to homemade dog food is a good option, it is so needed. I love your regular channel, I have recently gone KETO and any recipe ideas that you have for the keto diet are most appreciated. Love your healthy , vibrant and positive energy!
Thanks for sharing, I would love to see more recipes like this one.
Update - I made this for my three doggos, and they gobbled it up. They were on strike and didn’t want to touch their Costco kibble anymore. So I’m mixing this with the kibble, and they loved it and look so happy now. 😄Can’t thank you enough, thanks for the recipe! It’s so healthy!
That's great I never bought dog food from Costco. Thank you for the information.
Mh dog wouldn't eat boring kibble too u gotta add some stuff sometimes in their food or switch meals with homemade
Yeah my puppy as stopped eating her kibble like she used to (one cup fir breakfast and one for dinner) now she just eats half that and i have to remind her to eat or she'll get distracted lol So i started looking into stuff like this to mix with her food I feel bad bc kibble 24/7 but be boring for her
I really can’t blame them for not wanting to eat stale burnt kibble There is no way that stuff is pleasant. It’s a last resort avoidance of starvation
How do you break down the portion kibble vs homemade?
I really appreciated your KZhead channel because I just adopted a 15 month old English pointer with Pyrenees and my wife passed away in August of 2023. And this dog is my soulmate and I want him healthy and happy. He’s so amazing. I thought I want to be able to feed my dog the food 5:21 that I would eat myself and not dog food that you buying a bag. It’s just him and I.
If that's how your dog food looks I can't only imagine what a people meal looks like, your family is lucky to have you. Awesome thank you for this because I love my dogs.
I make a meal for my pup and myself very similar to this except the egg and I use chicken thighs or breasts though ground would still be appetizing enough. I mix with his kibble since he's a Akita and growing about an inch a day at this stage. I love sweet potatoes so does he as well as carrots. It's great because I've got lots of extra canned food so he gets green beans, kidney beans, carrots, pumpkin and much more. I make up to 4 meals at a time for him. Things like ground flax seed, turmeric, use some black pepper to make it effective, ginger and I'm learning more and more important foods everytime I study.
Fantastic video based on a great idea! Would love to see more in this series - thanks Dani!!!
Yes, please more recipes for dog food and treats especially would be great. Thank you for your videos!
I just made this today and my dogs love it! Thanks for sharing. I'm picking up a cookbook now.
My Daisy is thrilled with this new food in her bowl. I love making her something she really likes!!
Love your dog food. I live in Thailand and we always cook dog food for our dogs. Normally, we give them rice, meat (like chicken or pork liver), and veggies. We also often give them our leftovers like eggs, vegetables, soup, milk.)

Hey Dani, I’ve been following you for years and 2 days ago I got my own little doggie for the first time! So when your recipe popped up from my search I was thrilled because I trust you implicitly! I had decided to cook homemade food for my new fur baby and this looks absolutely fantastic…I can’t thank you enough!!! ❤
This dog food does not contain enough of many nutrients dogs need. There is no iodine, manganese, calcium, copper, etc.. Dogs are carnivores by nature (does not mean they can’t get benefits of plants) and need mostly meat, bone and organs in their diet.
I don't own a dog but fr one dog lover to another...you're amazing for making this. The amount of ppl you will inspire with this is immeasurable 💙
Awe, thank you! I hope it's helpful and appreciate your kind words :)
Yes more recipes please! I've started making our 13 year Beagle/Bassett food about 6 months ago. She loves it. I cook our brown rice in the instant pot and the rest on the stove.

My dog wasn’t feeling good and had diarrhea. I made this recipe and she was feeling much better in just a few days. Thank you so much for teaching me how to cook for my dog. For years I made fun of people who did this but I am now a believer!
Once you learn what goes into commercial dog food, you can't forget. I learned many years ago that ALL supermarket dog food use horse meat. And If the ingredients don't mention which 'MEAT' they are using, you can assume you're fbuying horse by-products. they use parts that have no nutritional value, like ground up intestines, hooves, literally every part of the animal. The only reason they add vegetables and jelly, is so humans find it more appealing when feeding their dog. if the food looks disgusting, we stop buying it. But it's common knowledge euthanised racehorses get sold to abbotoirs, and then manufactured into dog food. it's NASTY stuff. If you can't be bothered cooking, it's better to buy the more expensive brands that use beef and chicken proteins.
Let’s be fr, this food and all the processed junk both our pets and us have been lied into eating for necessity, is ultra processed poison. Never again
Dani it’s great you’re encouraging people to cook for their dogs instead of buying kibble. However, that is way too much rice (carbs), could use more eggs or add raw eggs at feeding time. Salmon oil can also be added. Garlic is not toxic to dogs unless given in high quantities. Reason for dog food recall years ago. I would add organ meat and a few other things. Dr. Becker is an amazing resource. I do not cook my dog food. It’s ground up and frozen, thawed and fed. Never had an issue.
My dog is 2 now but I got him as a puppy and I used to hide when I eat bc I felt so bad w him watching. So one day I decided to also cook for him and we been enjoying meals together since. Really helped w the bonding too!
I feel the same!!!❤❤❤❤ Great that you put this out for others!!

Tuna Dish that my dog loves - Big can of tuna drained, five stalks of fresh celery thinly cut, a bunch of dill, a cup of beef stock soup, a cup of cooked mushrooms, 100 grams of washed spinach leaves, some added peas, corns and carrots. If I have a spare egg and slice of bread I wil semi cook the egg, soak the slice of bread and throw it in as well for some added texture. I use Olive oil only to cook the food and only a little, rely on the cup of beef stock to boil it more than fry it to maintain the nutrition as much as possible. She loves it and as an added plus it encourages us owners to eat healthier. They can have what they smell and it only takes a little additional effort to make an extra portion for the dog. We can then add to the human dishes what the dog is unable to digest such as chilli, turmeric, cumin, yoghurt, curry etc whilst keeping our canine family member included and loved.
I made this for my puppy who actually turned one today and he LOVED it! One of the first things I noticed is that his poops aren't nearly as stinky and he has even more energy! He went back to his bowl 4-5 times to lick it clean. I am giving up the store bought food for this and I bought a homemade dog food cook book yesterday on Amazon. Thank you for this easy, healthy recipe :)
We started making our own food 2 years ago. we use rice, frozen veggies, frozen fruit, either black or kidney beans and some kind of meat, our entire family are hunters and fishermen so we have alot of wild game meat, we've even used the frozen swai/tilapia/whiting fish and our dogs love it. The key is to stay completely away from canned veggies, fruits, and meats because they are so salty and soaked in preserves from the time they are canned until you open it and you can never get them completely clean. The only thing we do different then the video does is we bake ours. We baked the meat in a metal strainer and the add it in a pan with the rice, frozen veggies, frozen fruits and cooked beans and baked it all together for 15 minutes. The most important thing is learn what they can't eat and if you have a question google it. we do a pound of rice, a pound of meat, 2 cups of cooked beans, a bag of frozen veggies (peas are our dogs fav's), a bag of frozen fruit (ours love Blueberries and Strawberries) and i also make up a bowl of chicken broth using the bullion cubes to pour over the food and then warm in the microwave before giving it to them, our dogs are spoiled and won't eat it cold, just make sure it's not too hot, just warm to the touch.
@@TheREALOC1972, you're giving your dogs beans?
I just wanted to thank you sooooo much for this recipe!!!! We just got a 15 week old German Shepard Black lab mix puppy, we didn't want to give him the dry store food all the time. I came across this video and decided to try it out with our pup, he absolutely loves it. I made 3 batches, we added 7 blueberries to each serving. Thanks again! ❤

I love this because it's way SIMPLE! Others are more complicated which is fine but for starting out this is great for beginners! Thanks 😊 My pups already eat a healthy dry dog food with no fillers but this has still interested me!
Yes I would love to see more of these videos. My dog was recently diagnosed with a condition that she can't eat grains. I have swapped her to a salmon based dog food but this could be a great addition to her diet. Can't wait to try the recipe. Please, please make a treat video. I have been searching for a easy one that is also healthy. Love your channel.
Out of curiosity can she eat potatoes/sweet potatoes? Also sardines are a good alternative to salmon since they're very similar nutritional, also contain tons of omega fatty acids, have less mercury, and are cheaper on average, same goes for anchovies, mackerel, and herring. Muscles and oysters can also be good since they have tons of minerals like zinc. Depending on where you live fresh may be cheaper then canned but both work and if you get sardines packed in oil you an chuck that into their food too.
@@arthas640 sweet potatoes don't seem to bother her but regular potatoes do. Thanks for the suggestions. I will definitely give those a try!
I like to make homemade meals for my puppy…using beef, chicken, salmon, sardines, turkey, or pork as the main protein, then adding different veggies, parsley, brown or parboiled rice, sweet potatoes, etc. I made this recipe for my Pomeranian/Chihuahua 11 month puppy. She absolutely loved, loved, loved this meal. I apportioned about 16 meals (she’s a small dog…about 1/3 cup per meal). Gave some to a friend who said her dog really liked it a lot! Thank you for posting your recipes in KZhead…a Subscriber forever!
This looks like something I could eat! I feel like cooking for your pooch is a great way to further build your bond with them. You will also know exactly what's going into your dog.
Love this! I cook sometimes for my oldie but goody Mac the rat terrier. He loves carrots, spinach, quinoa or rice, peas and any kind of beans. He is a rescue and he has really bad teeth (never could afford a doggie dentist). He's more active and lost weight from my cooking. And I agree with comment below, dog food is processed and the good stuff is pricey. My 10 year old Pitt died of cancer & that's when I started cooking for Maki. Thank you for the tip w/ TURMERIC & EGG! I also give my cat wild caught tuna in water 2x a week.
Loved the recipe I also make my dogs they’re food and had run out of ideas thank you 🙏🏽

Hi Dani. Thank you so much. I have been cooking for my 3 dogs for 9 years now. Love to try something new and a little different. Your meal does look delicious!
Thank you so much for this. I started making my two chihuahuas food several months back due to one being very picky and it's great for them but I wanted some new recipes for them and here you are!! PLEASE keep doing these videos and doggie treat recipes would be awesome❤
I’m curious, did your chihuahuas like this recipe? I’m afraid my chihuahua is too picky. He eats meat only and I add a doggy vitamin to it. I’ve tried everything from kibble to the refrigerated doggy food and he turns his nose up. I want him to get healthier foods in his diet but I’m at a stand still. 😔
Do you feed your chihuahua about a quarter cup? Like if dog eats 1 cup of kibble for weight size a day, would you still feed 1 cup of home made a day?
Neat idea! Doggies need good nutrition too 🤗🐾🐾
I just made this for my dogs and they loved it. I also ate a bowl myself and it was very good. Thanks

I was just making this recipe for my pregnant momma dog who wouldn't eat her kibble before whelping. Though I didn't realize it was an official dog recipe. I had no idea there were dog recipe videos before now! I just cooked what I had on hand that was safe for dogs. Instead of turkey I use ground venison (bc we have a freezer full!) And omit the spinach bc of oxalates. Some days I use quinoa instead of rice. You can top it with some canned pumpkin as well!
Quinoa has more protein too and is easier on the digestion. Rice can be constipating.
Loved this!!! I feed my pup just store-bought kibble, but this totally inspired me and I'd love to do this for her! Please keep posting doggie content! (:
Thanks for your feedback and I can relate! I got inspired as well and now I can't stop, lol!

@@CleanandDeliciousDani dog treats should Not have any type of starch in them or preservatives so all anybody needs to do to make dog and cat treats is Dehydrate strips or Chuck's of beef or lamb or goat or venison or rabbit etc etc heck even a little chicken better to use turkey never pork with a Little pink Himalayan salt on them. That's it. No special stupid veggie treats or cooked hard bisquits as those Will have starches in them to stick together which turns to SUGAR which is Not good for your pets

Cats will eat fish, meat or chicken with some rice and veggies. All ground up and cooked together.
You have to be careful with cats. Cats are obligate carnivores and if there's no taurine cats can go blind and get heart disease. You must do your research yourself and educate yourself.
Love this. Would love more dog recipes

I've made homemade dog food in the crockpot for my dog after his open stomach surgery (he refused to eat his dry food at the time and canned good was getting super expensive). He's a super sweet and happy dog! And I agree.... the more I learned the more inspired I was to make his food from scratch.
I have been making ground turkey, brown rice or pasta, carrots, blueberries etc for my 3 dogs. I never thought of tumeric or spinach. I have also from time to time added sweet potatoes. I appreciate your sharing your recipe.
I love this. I cook homemade for my two sausage dogs. Changing up the proteins, vegetables & starches. They love it & are super healthy.
Great video!! Dogs must have added calcium, you could add a crushed eggshell for that, but a supplement is probably best, and a multivitamin just to make sure they're getting everything they need. I also vary meats and veggies to help make sure they get everything, like using kale instead of spinach sometimes, etc. I LOVE cooking for my three little furkids, cooking healthy foods for them cleared up allergies AND my baby no longer vomits from his tummy issues. AWESOME!! I'm going to get those books you recommended, thanks!

Such a great video! I started adding cooked food to my dogs dry food. I love this recipe and will definitely try it. The added spices is something I didn’t know about and will now research being that my baby is 11 years old and is having issues with her hips. Hello how are you doing
@@leslieh1051 There is no one set recipe. Look at calorie count of what you add then divide it by number of servings. I started cooking my dogs food because he was always licking his butt add a can of pumpkin and it keeps his anal glands from itching. Usually use 4 chicken breasts a pound of ground turkey 6/7 cups of frozen vegetables 5 tablespoons chia seeds or ground flaxseed for fiber a tablespoon of bone meal a glug of olive oil a couple tablespoons of nutritional yeast of course the canned pumpkin. I use an immersion to blend everything except the chicken and I finely shred that. Hope this helps.
@@leslieh1051 Our vet is thrilled that at 9 years old my lab maintains a weight around 80 lbs and acts like a puppy, very muscular. Calories make no sense to me if I can achieve nutritional levels desired with less than 2000 calories a day, great for this 60 yo woman. I wouldn't throw garbage in my body or dog's just to achieve a calorie number.
I've been cooking for my dogs for over 10 years. They should only have spinach once or twice a week. Too much is not good for them. Also bonemeal is very important per my Vet. You should add it to each meal. Food grade bonemeal. Never thought to put turmeric in the food. Great idea! Enjoy your channel!
I bought some none meal and kelp powder any more advice?
