How to Lose Belly Fat
Reducing belly fat is probably one of the most common goals in fitness.
I get asked about this EVERY DAY. Multiple times.
And while we CAN lose belly fat, we can't significantly TARGET our fat loss there with ab workouts like leg raises, situps, or crunches.
"Spot reduction" with exercise is not effective.*
We lose fat proportionately throughout our body with diet and exercise.
Individuals do tend to store fat in different areas, but this is largely up to genetics.
*I'm aware of some more recent studies that show some spot reduction by doing high-intensity workouts in an area followed by cardio. However, there aren't MANY studies about this, and it's debatable whether or not this is significantly more effective than just regular diet and exercise. It's also unknown if there were other factors in this study. It's interesting, but I'm hesitant to recommend it until we know more.

The fitness industry is VERY sensitive about anyone promoting spot reduction. I didn't make the title what it was to mislead anyone, but to offer an ACTUAL solution to losing belly fat, which is just to lose fat throughout our body. It's really, really, not intended to be clickbait, but just to give a face value answer to a VERY common fitness question. Plus, "how to lose belly fat" is probably searched many times a day, and I'd prefer this video to come up than someone selling a $99 ab workout that supposedly targets belly fat. Still, let me know if you REALLY want me to change the title. Some people probably unsubscribed just from seeing it, without watching the 49-second video. NOTE: I'm aware of some more recent studies that show some spot reduction by doing high-intensity workouts in an area followed by cardio. However, there aren't MANY studies about this, and it's debatable whether or not this is significantly more effective than just regular diet and exercise. It's also unknown if there were other factors in this study. It's interesting, but I'm hesitant to recommend it until we know more. If you like, I can discuss this.
Keep the title as is 100%, people should know the truth
Keep the title. It’s short enough for folks to listen to your message.
I would love to hear more regarding the emerging studies as well
While this is largely true, there IS some limited evidence for spot reduction as the body preferentially mobilizes fat at the source closest to the muscle group which is utilized during the exercise. This effect, however, is largely neglible.
Visceral fat can be removed from exercise even without dieting. Even someone calorie neutral that has a total net fat loss of 0lbs can still get rid of the visceral fat that's in their blood vessels and in-between their organs which tend to be located in the belly.
We need to keep spreading this message, cheers Hampton

@@vocaloshin Depending on where you are you could try to just train your big muscle groups (Back, Chest, Legs) if you build muscle there it will increase your energy consumption and help with getting into a calorie deficit range thus helping with losing fat. and if you find the motivation you can and should throw in some of the smaller muscle groups because they all work together in the end. So yeah if you like calesthenics, do push-ups, squats and pull ups (or various variations building up to one) if you like weights, bench press etc. usually if you know what group you want to target you can easily look for stuff that fits for you. theres also swimming as a great all around workout. targets almost the entire body, builds stamina, is extremly healthy for the joints if you are overweight

@@vocaloshinhey PT here who’s dealt with weight issues most of her life :) in general muscle toning (or what it actually is it muscle building) will only develop your growth and increase metabolism. You will predominantly just be getting bigger because your muscle will grow beneath the fat and it may help to develop a little shape, but if you’re worried about chubbiness you’ll unfortunately have to up your cardio or switch to a calorie deficit high protein diet and keep the same routine. if you focus on muscle building first, it’ll be much easier to lose the weight after than to lose weight and then gain muscle. You can combine both which more often than not provide the most effective results but are slower.

It’s a way more comprehensive explanation about losing fat than I’ve ever heard so thank-you.

It's true! I barely gained 15 pounds after I gave birth. It was over a year and I was suddenly hit with a matter of the family that sent me spiraling into depression, activating terrible hormones and within a couple of months I gained way too much. Luckily, I am getting back into my routine slowly but every day I am feeling better and better. Please don't disregard your body's chemistry because it does make or break your weight goals!
Cool story bro
This *is* actually the answer I wanted to hear. I'm young-ish but chronically ill, disabled, and allergic to a ton of food groups including almost every source of protein, and I've inherited some insanely imbalanced hormones that have sent all my female relatives into early graves. Sooo, while I try to move around as much as possible and track my food, I'm aware it's never going to be ideal. I do have doctors trying to assist with these things, although some medicines can make weight gain worse. I've been wondering if crunches should be on my To Attempt list, but I've been concerned they will crunch more than my flabdomen. Thanks for the encouragement to keep the long term, overall health vision for weight management; it's a big weight off my mind, if not my body. 😄
It makes sense. Imagine how lopsided we’d look if one arm was skinner than the other because we targeted a specific region, when it’s better off to lose fat uniformally and evenly.
That and fat is meant as caloric storage for famine times. It makes sense to have it everywhere muscle will be using it, as well as a few larger deposits for backup storage... like a water reservoir is great for emergencies, but it's equally good if everyone in town has a personal 5gal jug in the corner before draining community sources. Also, knowing the biology: we don't gain or lose fat cells. They just get bigger and smaller. So genetics place our fat cells at the start, and it's up to us to manage how full they are.
One of my arms is actually skinnier than the other and it's perplexing. I am right handed and use my right arm more, but my right arm is fatter. Bizarre.
Some people have a large belly and no buttocks. It's understandable why people would look to correct this.
my right arm is bigger than my left arm because I'm right handed so I have more muscle mass there-
@@sugahoney89it probably has the same amount of fat but more muscle mass

Where do you get hired as a “sports scientist?”
I think it is important to also mention that if you build muscle in an area it can make the area look more appealing.

i dont understand this because lets say i mainly do ab workouts then like this video says wont that only make me lose fat throughout my body? or will that make me eventually get stomach muscles from changing the fat to muscles rather than losing the fat? (i know it takes a long time to gain muscle/get abs i am trying to lose my stomach fat therefore i am mainly doing ab excersises.)
@@prayingonyourdownfallfat doesn’t turn into muscle. You can build muscle while still maintaining fat in that specific area. So you can do a lot of core exercises all you want but if you have too much fat on your stomach, then cardio/diet will be the only way to reveal those abdominal muscles. He also mentioned genetics because some people genetically do not carry a lot of fat in their belly area / get rid belly fat faster than others. This is why some people think spot reduction “works” for them .
I like how this guy just drops a piece of information that a lot of the other "health and fitness gurus" try to con you into subbing for without any follow through. This man is an inspiration. It helps me stay motivated.
"Where we store fat is up to genetics" that is actually really cool to know
Look into insulin. Where you put it. Get rid of sugar in your diet. Intermittent fasting helps to
Not really true though. When people start out working out, their arms get more defined, their face gets less chubby, their legs get a little skinnier. It’s because those areas just lose fat easier. When you’re cold with a jacket, pants and a shirt under, notice how it’s always your legs and arms feeling cold while your torso is fine. This is because the body stores most fat in the belly. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk
You can very easily notice this in females. Even, and more specifically very attractive black ladies or caribbeans. There is a tendency for them to have thicker bums, legs, even when they are in a good healthy “shape”
@@CKCrippledKnight yup i have noticed, even if they get chubby and thick, they still look attractive and appealing, their waist are smaller and thighs and bums gets bigger .
@@Chadius_Thundercock everything in that is true.. until the last point. The reason you feel warm in the torso while cold on the outside is because the vessels in your fingers/ toes and arms and legs contract, so the blood stays warm and flows through its vital organs, so they don’t fail, which is why when it’s cold, you feel numb in the fingers and toes and sometimes in the forearm.

Personal recommendations from my experience: -try changing your routine, I used to do a routine that I actually liked which involved calisthenics with a weighted vest. It was fun and everything, but I still didn't get my "gains" showing. So, I decided to change my focus on heavy training... And that worked better then I expected lmao. -focus on your diet. If you don't follow a diet wit a caloric deficit, you won't lose weight. There's no trick behind it. There's no miraculous "30 min workout to burn belly fat". CUT CALORIES and train harder. And yes, it's difficult. We've all been there. But it's a matter of consistency and patience. - if you are already in a diet, lost some weight, but still have some love handles try gaining more muscle. It's also a matter of genetics. Maybe your body just stores that fat naturally in your sides, maybe your torso is naturally wider... Genetics play a big role and unfortunately there's nothing you can do to change that. So, instead of torturing yourself with more caloric deficit, try having a bigger back. Also train your shoulders to get that "v" body shape and define your abs and obliques.
Why does this have so few likes this is all very good advice. Especially that last one. Lotta of people don't know a v-taper frame comes on 2 parts, upper and lower body
Another thing I want to add: If you're new to this, get your newbie gains FIRST before trying to cut too hard. There's no reason to rush things, your body won't have much muscle on it anyway and you'll just look way too skinny until your muscles are large enough to fill out your bones on their own. Keep your calorie deficit in the 100-200 calorie mark, focus on training and keep filling out your muscles, then slowly drop the body fat % as your muscles fill you out. Focus on progress pictures and energy levels, it'll all come in time.
No man, I don't wanna lose weight no more, I'm literally underweight lol I'm just looking to add more muscle, not to be freak Olympia dude, but just a fitness enjoyer

It should do the trick. It's not that you will lose only the belly fat, but it will see more progress
Man that is the best most satisfying answer i heard in weeks. Personally im not a big abs excercise type of guy so its very very good to hear this out of one of the best fitness influencer out there. Don't get me wrong i train abs sometimes on my weekly schedule too
Yeah, training abs is important, if you have really low body fat (so really low belly fat) but have no abs, you won't look shredded, you'll just look like you're starving. But if you already have abs (the muscles, not necessarily showing abs) and you want them to show, you could have the biggest abs in the world and they won't show until you get under a certain amount of body fat, and abs exercises really aren't the most efficient way to lower overall body fat.

I’ve been working out for two months trying to get in better shape, and that is what I’ve come to learn as well.
You are the most wholesome fitness guy in the world and I appreciate you.
Honestly this is a great thing to tell people. Instead of focusing on things that are harder for some folks, they know that a good start is to just exercise the way you do best
I have so much respect for you my guy. You give practical fitness advice and real information without sugar coating anything.
Thank you for this. It's good for people to know that it's not their fault when they fail, despite following all those regimens.
I like how straightforward your message was.
Abs exercises doesn’t spot reduce fat but abs exercises gets you super chiselled abs but to get it to show you will have to lose fat, here’s an advice that doesn’t beat around the bush.
definitely, after I lost some weight I got a flat belly but ab exercises helped me gain definition
Run (and cardio in general) to lose fat, while bodybuilding is to make sure you develop the muscles at the same time, instead of burning them with calories as well.
@@masterexploder9668 agreed
@@masterexploder9668 thats true too, but if you bodybuild you develop muscle, which burns fat(calories) just by you having it.
@@lalimalik6614 also an important point most fake fitness knowledgeable people won’t talk about.
I’m glad you’re talking about this too. I feel like I go blue in the face some days trying to tell people this information. Spread the love!!
Actually you are just being really honest. Good on you. Full credit your way, bro ! Im still following you
Thank you for keeping it real. Keep working out and eating right people. Just hard work, dedication and patience.
I love how he is so kind with a great heart and an amazing attitude
If positivity is a human, he is Hampton
This is actually what I needed to hear. I'm slowly loosing weight but my belly loves to store fat. My abs are looking sweet but the fat around them is stubborn.
It's the answer I wanted to hear to determine if you were pedaling misinformation in order to gain viewers. You just gained a new subscriber.
This man tested my patience for 30 seconds
Your videos are always great and informative, which is why I got disappointed when I read the title because I thought you were about to give us some phony advice on fat loss targeting. Shouldn't have doubted you, you're one of the best fitness youtubers I've came across
spick olie - buenos dios senoir...
I really like the way this guy talks. I have been trying to lose weight for 2 years now and tried all the exercise, cardio ,yoga and now walking. The change in my body is slow because I don't skip meals or go for a diet. But I feel a lot of change in my mental health and that's what is important, not losing weight in a week's period and then done.
Finally someone who tells it how it is, instead of telling what everybody wants to hear...
I really appreciate this bit of information it relieves so much stress for me🎉
I love this guy, he's so friendly and to the point
This is so true..i used to obsessed on one spot that i want to reduce being the tummy, and it never seemed to work..but when i realized that i need to do a whole body workout, thats when i started seeing positive results
i know you commented this awhile ago, but could you tell me what workout helped you to see results?
As a fat person, I really appreciate your gentle approach to fitness education. You and MovementbyDavid have really helped me reframe my approach to health and fitness.
Straight to the point unlike many others. Thank you for being truthful.
thanks for the closed caption! i have a hearing loss and it really helps
It's not the answer I wanna hear but it's the answer that I NEED to hear
While it's hard to hear and read, I think the title should stay. One of the only honest videos on the subject around here.
The only reason I clicked this title (which, although not clickbait in and of itself, does hit on a very sensitive topic, and therefor generates a lot of interactions) is because I know your channel and trusted that you would give a nuanced and researched answer, rather than just a "drink my herbal tea" plug. I'm sorry if you lost some followers, but I'm really thankful that there is now more true content out there.
I absolutely love your channel! You've got some amazing energy, my brother, and your advice is spot on! Cheers!
