  • sparks wages are not good. I am self employed and charge more than most in my area. The cost of running an electrical business is high, I have done the sums and know that If i was a full time employed HGV driver, I would be around 12 - 14K a year better off without dealing with all the customer moaning about the cost of electricians all the time. I am a 21 year time served electrician and am still genuinely interest in electrics, but as far as being in the trade and all the shit that goes with it, its probably not worth it

  • Electricians wages are terrible for what we do. The JIB didn't issue a pay rate increase during covid and haven't caught up since. Seeing all the sectors going on strike to get more pay than most employed sparks. Just need a day where every spark has a day off and see how much chaos there is by 9am.

  • Will you be paying less tax? It depends! If you're increasing your prices to allow for inflation, remember that the income tax and NI personal allowance thresholds are STILL FROZEN (to 2028 at the moment). Despite the changes to the NI rates, you could quite easily still pay MORE tax in the next tax year!

    • The government is just playing if they are real and means it then simply every week they should do an automatic tax return in the payslip by this simple method. Around 55 pounds week is paid back in wages from tax because that is for travel and for tools per week. Thus if someone tax is let us say 250 pounds per week etc which is based on 20 percent for sole traders then 55 pounds should be paid back for everyweek in wages payslip for petrol or traveling to work and a small amount for tools etc. This is the only way any government can be seriouse other than that is it is just pure deception for showing pennies to people....

  • Re: VAT relief. If you're making more than the VAT threshold in turnover, which any full time electrician should be, then you must be VAT registered, then it doesn't matter what the VAT rates are because you don't pay the VAT. The concept of VAT relief is irrelevant. It's paid by your customers where those customers are menbers of the public, or other businesses which are not VAT registered. The true cost to a sole trader or limited company which is VAT registered of any raw matetials they buy, if bought from another business which is VAT registered is simply the cost of raw materials _without_ VAT. The VAT rate is immaterial.

    @deang5622@deang56225 ай бұрын
    • If you are charging 100 an hour and the customer is paying you 120 then basically you could have charged the 120 he is willing to pay for the job if VAT did not apply to labour. VAT is an extra tax on all self-employed trades. The joke that the customer pays is technically correct but not in practice.

      @Fastandpro@Fastandpro5 ай бұрын
    • @@Fastandpro The residential customer DOES pay the VAT. The business charging the VAT is collecting it on behalf of HMRC. The business pays the VAT collected to HMRC. The issue is that if you're VAT registered, you have to put your prices up by 20%. Now that might cause an issue with competitiveness with other providers of the service you are providing where they are not VAT registered and don't add the VAT on to the price of a job. If the business owner doesn't want to increase the price of their work to the customer to cover that VAT, and that business/VAT registered sole trader is willing to absorb it, that's their choice. It means that the business makes less profit => Lower income for the sole trader. But the fact is, it is still the customer that is paying the VAT. And that is a legal obligation. The legal obligation is on the sole trader or business to keep a record of how much VAT they charge on their invoices to customers, to record how much VAT they pay on invoices they receive from their suppliers and calculate the difference. It is that difference which is paid to HMRC. So the reality is, the residential customer really is paying the VAT and the business is simply collecting that VAT amount and passing it on to HMRC. Not providing it to HMRC is a criminal offence. It is called tax evasion. So if you are not passing *ALL* of the VAT you charge your customers to HMRC, less the amount of VAT you pay on your supplies, then you are at risk of being prosecuted.

      @deang5622@deang56225 ай бұрын
    • @@deang5622 "Now that might cause an issue with competitiveness with other providers of the service you are providing where they are not VAT registered and don't add the VAT on to the price of a job." If they are not registered for VAT they can still add 20% profit and remain competitive. They also do not need to spend the time compelling VAT returns. I have been paying VAT for 45 years would you like me to add it all up for you. Please don't get on your high horse accusing me of not paying tax because I object to not being paid to collect it. Do you pay your staff? You can see how it works out if you don't.

  • Did I hear that correctly. we will be paying less tax. does that include sub contractors on CSCS?

    • It's a tax rule, it's nothing to do with what qualifications or skills you have. It's what is called Class 4 National Insurance Contributions. If you are self employed then you will pay this tax. If you receive payslips from a company and they deduct tax from your wages then you are not in self employment and you do not pay this tax. For other scenarios, as a part time employee where you also have self employed income, consult an accountant.

      @piotrlobacz@piotrlobacz5 ай бұрын
    • @@RyanBennett-ub2cu If it was myself I would do GCSE Math / Physics, a refresher course, then do the distance learning Level 3 (to save money) if money is no issue then do the course, because it's trigonometry and algebra which confuses people and to remember the formula. The schools do not tell you this because they want to milk you and do not care if you fail or pass. Once you understand the theory from the Math/Physics GCSE it will make it much easier to understand the level 3. The core issue is why you find it difficult because you have a problem in GCSE math (higher tier) / Physics, due to the bad education system in the UK. It is not your fault, its the education system :)

  • 1:04 the information here is wrong, all thats happened is the scope for Energy Saving Materials(ESM) has been expanded to include battery storage systems, and water source heat pumps and diverters. so the customer won't pay any VAT on the installation of qualifying ESM until the scheme ends in 2027, when it'll go back to 5% VAT instead of 20%

The money in the housing market plays a big part in how much work is going on. Millions of houses are older than 25yrs and now require complete rewires plus upgrades, the work is out there, maybe the next government will provide confidence to the economy and housing market, if people have money in their pockets, generally they'll spend, on living space, renewable, and luxuries which all need sparkies!.
