"PUPPET" Animated Short Film by Patrick Smith
Through an escalating series of torture, a possessed sock puppet takes embodiment of fear, chaos, and willful self-destruction.
"Puppet" illustrates the masochistic tendencies of the creative person, metaphorically telling a story of an artists work taking over, and ultimately destroying their life.
Directors Notes:
I originally created this short animation to illustrate obsession with work, but it quickly turned into an exercise in visualizing abuse, particular the kind that is self inflicted. This film was drawn with pencil on paper, the thousands of drawings were scanned, and then colored in Adobe Photoshop, and composited in Adobe After Effects (as all my films are). "Puppet" premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, and went on to screen in over a hundred film festivals and events world-wide. It was included in a special screening of the best of "Spike and Mike" in Annecy.

Self-destructive behavior / masochism (masochism is surprisingly rare).
As I know, it's rather surprisingly common. Heard different answers, but I'd say it can't be far from, like, 1/10 to 1/20 ppl to have this (which should be btw even more common than sadism). Even just for the sense of this- why would you, as an animator-influencer-etc. make an animation about something rare? From the principle you want to catch as many people as possible to watch the vid, it could've been interesting, yes, but there are tons of "such" rare things that (usually just based on their rarity) aren't as popular or/therefore less interesting for the masses you'd be targeting. This way, by animating a rather known topic, you're gaining yourself audience and giving enlightment or… something like that.
If the puppets can move, they can make a whole factory, forget about robots taking over. What about puppets?
and the irony is.. we would be in control
Yes but our hands would br the hosts, so if we took them off before they put another on the hand, it wouldnt make the other live yet

I love how you get the in depth perspective which i am struggling with. It really makes it look like you are looking at the action taking place in real life. In short, keep making these good quality animations.

This has the best and clearest message untill now of all of your work
thx.. it's one of the last films I animated on actual paper.
The physics of the cloth are so satisfying! Fantastic work on this!
Thank you! 😄
I don't understand the level of dislikes on this. The film is engaging and incredibly animated. So much effort here. Also, the music reminds me of the Animaniacs
Sorry for being 3 years late but I'm here to let you know that the fact you put that last sentence made me think of something Wakko would do.

You were the best part about Blank on Blank. It’s good to see you’re still hard at work on cool stuff.
thanks!! I loved doing "blank on blank"!!
All the while when he's mutating and getting new arms and being attacked by the puppets all i could think was "that's not how clothes work" when the arms were spinning around him.

The Doctor seems like a nice guy.
yeah.. he wasn't trying to be cruel.. he just thought the face on the cast would cheer him up, not knowing the kids mental history of puppet masochism.
@@PatrickSmithAnimation yeah. That was mainly what I thought about when I saw that scene. The doctor, after all, just wanted to make the kid feel a little better. Even the doctor's mustache was upturned when he wrote that, as if he was smiling. All in all, the doctor is, from what I gather, a genuinely good and kind man

Really awesome animation. How long does it take you to animate? I mean once your storyboard is done, how long does it take to animate the scenes? Howmany hours and days in a weel?
too many hours.. it really takes a long time, but i've gotten a bit faster over the years. PUPPET took about 6 months of drawing.
