    • @@The_Mongoose Apologies in advance for my long explanation! 🙏 I think there's such a thing as _positive sexuality_ and _negative sexuality,_ as you say, we do see explicitly sexual content in Western games (I can only think of Last Of Us 2 atm, and I haven't played BG:III yet), but I think it really sits with who gets to decide what is considered positive or negative? My feeling is that there are a couple reasons why in particular TLoU2 wasn't censored; 1) Because it's a big flagship game, it's Sony's chance to legitimise games as a form of media that can do whatever tv and film can, thus advertising to more potential investors. 2) In the case of TLoU2, you need only look at Abigail's appearance, she's not what most would consider traditionally attractive, and we all see the body positivity movement, the Dove gamer-girls advert, female characters made uglier (The Horizon Zero Dawn devs actually admitted that was the case for their game in an interview). And so, I think there are groups backed by ESG/DEI that have the agenda of normalising and putting non-traditionally attractive women at the forefront, even though as humans we all prefer things that are more aesthetically pleasing than not. - We do also see this same group of people who share the same politics in different industries too, such as translations for animé. They often see mistranslating and changing the original context as justifiable, that often times Japanese (and now Korean) culture is inherently problematic/chauvinistic /politically incorrect, and they deem it unsuitable for western audiences so they take a self-righteous stance thinking they're doing the world a favour, and that censoring and changing this 'wrong' content is perfectly ok to do, the original creator's intentions be damned as the translator's cause is more morally just (and in this case, it's not a matter of interpretation either, I'm a native Japanese speaker and I notice this mistranslation occasionally when I see the subtitles.) This is just my opinion though developed from my understanding of the current entertainment industry and internet politics! 😂

Ever heard of Safe horny/safe Edgy? the first point I agree with, it is sad some things are being accepted in a Cherry picking sort of way. Second point works too, I am not sure to buy the first one knowing the Forbidden West has ruined the main woman of the game. While Abi's appearance is annoying considering people say its realistic. Did play the first Last of Us as a rental it was okay. Said people are one side of politics. For the time being no one is talking about Critical thinking when understanding media. I am bringing up Media Literacy, it won't be for too long. Ever heard Mangakamen? He talked about it and has given advice, check out his media Literacy is dead video. He made good points, I am not mentioning the meat and potatoes of the video. In order to not cheat you out of the information you get from it. Indeed there is mistranslations and changes of the text, which is annoying plain and simple. Sadly there parts of America which view Asian Countries as evil among other descriptions. Said people don't have a religion there is no higher power only the state. What is being typed needs work on my end. I can't say why bringing up the religious or political part, although will mention this: People with Strong views are not easy to change their mind. They don't love Japanese games; they have been censoring them nonstop, and the trash localizations that they make don't help their case either. Suddenly they stopped reporting on it (I wonder why) and when Dead Space 3 came out the journalists defended the microtransactions and called gamers that used an exploit in the game thieves. - What about World of Tanks. The developer targeted a KZhead channel, had it closed down for a while. Journalists reported on it claiming the KZheadr used bad words. In reality the KZheadr talked about the new Tank, Ammo and scummy practices. I remember posting on Kotaku: _"Yeah, that's nice and all, but what about that Golden Tank and Ammo stuff."_ because *not a single game journalist brought it up.*

  • Remember when they said that the game "wouldn't be censored" in Japan? This is how I think it went: Japan made some requests for toning the game down in some areas in order not to give it a Cero Z and then someone at Sony convinced, or ordered Shift Up to apply those changes worldwide, with the excuse that they are pretty minor. Economic considerations also come to mind. Remember how they said that the Japanese audio wouldn't be on the disc? This is probably because they were planning a separate version for Japan, maybe fearing that the Japanese one would have to be censored even more. But having to maintain a single version of the game worldwide is a money saver.

Who knows how Shift Up will be in the future as they went public. Maybe another Blizzard etc. I'll enjoy it while I can.

  • Don’t forget censorship from the activists and journalists, less you risk them tanking your game sales, getting one of the other censors to drop you anyway, or targeting your home life, like getting you fired, expelled, evicted, reputation assassination, etc (maybe even vandalism or physical assault).

  • 'All I can think of is that they were trying to antagonize their customer base' YES. Also, back during the Sony/M$ fued over CoD, I heard it mentioned that in the documents/emails that were leaked from that, that M$ was trying to seed Nintendo's board. It's a common strategy. Kinda wish more people shined light on that aspect when it happened.

  • The reason they wanted to censor Stellar Blade was to make it unattractive to those that like sexy women, so the sales will lag and the game/developer gets dropped. Essentially, theyre banking on all the headlines saying CENSORED CENSORED CENSORED to scare off Stellar Blade's core audience so that the developer is forced to cater to the woke, basically. At least, that's my theory. Journalists want the game to fail, so theyre using our own psychology against us.

  • Censorship is also akin to sabotage. Sony may be using censorship has an unfair business practice to manipulate the gaming market. Since they do show a bias against certain games from where they are made. Someone more versed in business law and practice would be better suited to look into it.

  • Thank you for bringing this up, only part you kinda got wrong is that it wasn't a day 1 patch. The disc had version 1.00, early reveiwers got 1.01 and then the patch on release was ver 1.02. The costume was censored in ver 1.01. Either way we don't know why the censorship happened when the game already went gold, normally Sony give big sellers a pass on content. I think it probably has to do with global release, maybe some region demanded changes? They said it would be uncensored in Japan, it removed gore from Eve's body in a acene. Who knows what other entities got involved. They censored NIKKE for certain markets, could be the same in this case.

The more money is involved the less consideration is given to the experience of those who despise censorship but in the end it is the choice of the dev studio. @5:35 In a close to ideal situation for the banks, probably but that is not really the case anymore.

If you have employees in your company who want to push The Message (tm) through your games, they'll gladly team up with any of the entities you mentioned to sabotage your project. I think what the Stellar Blade censorship is meant to communicate to players is that, even if a team manages to work within the current system to get a game like that out the door, they'll still do everything they can to take it away from you even after release.

  • You know what, I just realized that since Shift Up is a Korean company, it is highly likely that Sony screwed them over because of the animosity/racism that still exists between Koreans and Japanese. I don't think Sony was out to upset the players or fans of the company specifically, but it was the company itself that they wanted to harm. Which is why the game had all the uncensored content all the way up to a week before the game came out, and suddenly right before they send out the review copies they had to censor the game, which is why the games journalists got version 1.0.0.1 copies which had the censorship, and people who pre-ordered the physical disk got the 1.0.0.0 copy which was uncensored.

  • Sony has been censoring Japanese games hard since at least 2003. Visual novels have never recovered. Best earliest example I can think of was the "Snow" visual novel (2003). It was a complete game with all its cgs and ready to release. Then for some inexplicable reason on release they removed the main heroine's romantic route and H CGs but kept everyone else's. And then the game released on Sony systems a while later. HMMMM.... Its almost as if Sony had a problem with her young design and had them scrap it last minute. The other more recent company doing censorship is of course Steam. An example this month was "The Hungy Lamb: Traveling in the Late Ming Dynasty" where the devs had to delay their release due to unexpected steam censorship and openly stated this on their steam page. It wasn't even an H game.
