Adam has been using the Zenfone 10 for a while now and though he loves its compact design, it does have some flaws. ASUS is back with their new Zenfone 11, but now they've made it ~Ultra~ with a large design reminiscent of their ROG Phone 8. Will Adam think this phone is worth the death of one of the few remaining small-sized phones or has ASUS lost their niche?

  • The software updates are such a problem with Asus' phones. Especially since they've all but publicly confirmed (I've got an email confirming it) that they will not be providing a means for the people that bought their phones to unlock the bootloaders anymore. Asus betrayed a lot of their customers, not just the small phone enthusiasts. For those who are interested or bought an Asus phone themselves hoping to be able to unlock the bootloader: Asus has reportedly already settled with one person in the UK and they got their court fees and the cost of the phone refunded.

  • The key selling point about the Zenfone was it's compact size. Now it's competing with other flagships like Samsung's S24 and it is not even close. Specs like 2 year support compared to Samung's 7 years, camera quality, overall design, etc. I won't be surprised they end up killing the Zenfone lineup

    • @@iatwiatw Is anyone selling these in phone bundles, or do you need to be an enthusiast who either lives in the correct countries, or is willing to roll dice on resellers? Because the S24 is the same size and is apparently selling better than the slightly larger S24+, and both the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro are the same size as well. As a Zenfone 9 owner, it looks like I might need to jump back to Samsung in a few years, but it's not like this form factor is unserved.

    • Its the opposite if you look at sales and market share. Asus's dramatic decline in market share coincides with the years they sold smaller flagships. It went from about 7% when the zenphones were 6.5inch to a measly 2% today. Far from being the size that "that nobody wants", the larger format is where all the value is for the manufacturers. Despite their loudness on the web, the small phone crowd are in practice a drop in the ocean when it comes to actual consumer demand.

    • @@commanderoof4578 You reiterated my point there. I'm from India and I know there are phones with up to 7000mah, and at the end of the day it really comes down to software optimization to make the battery work well. But my point is 90% of Android phones are between 4500 to 5500 mah. Complaining that the phone is 5500 mah is simply nitpicking because you can't find anything else to complain about. And software wise, the zenfones have close to stock Android, so the complaint on battery capacity is really just nitpicking for the sake of it.

  • Honestly I have been using the 11 Ultra for about 1 week now, granted this is like an upgrade for me after a 7-8 year old Sony Xperia smartphone, plus got it on its Launch Offer. Mainly got this becasue to me it's a cheaper ROG Phone without all the cooling fluff and it still has a Headphone Jack which is deal breaker for me, I hate having to carry dongles . Granted I don't mind the lack of support for long (granted OS updates are really lackluster nowadays) had very little issues with it so far, had to reconfigure a few things and I also agree 4k is too much on a phone. I like my big screen on it and games are just amazing to play on it. The CPU on it is great too, main reason I didn't consider a Pixel, and theCamera isn't a bother to me, Im not really a camera snob xD. Its a perfectly fine device thatis powerful yet lasts long and hs a headphone jack which will likely last 7 years even if they are droppomg support for it earlier than others (atleast), heck my Mums Galaxy S8 runs perfectly fine and is still fast despite the support being dropped so I have high hopes for the zenfone 11 ultra.

  • As someone who plays genshin all the time on my phone, the Zenfone 10, despite the flagship snapdragon 8 gen 2, overheats like crazy and drops frames after a good 15 min of gaming. Depending on which version of the phone I was on, it either clocked down to 50fps once it reaches 40°C and to 40fps when over 45°C, or like what it does now, clocking down at randomly intervals, leading to moments where I could be getting 60fps, then the phone shits itself to 35fps and huge lag spike. For the rog phone 6, iirc it drops to 50fps at like 45°C and 40fps or lower at 50°C, but it performed much better despite being a snapdragon 8+ gen 1. Even though they can run hotter than Samsung or pixel phones, I'm surprised how crappily they perform compared to xiaomi's flagship and Nubia red magic. Disappointing performance, but if I'm some Normy person who just wants a decent phone, it's great, besides the camera which is even more inconsistent compared even to older OnePlus phones 😔 wtf Asus, your past phone had just one outstanding feature, and you removed it, now all your phone are basic and not even value for money

  • The Zenfone 11 Ultra is awesome in my opinion. The thing is, it's great & all to have compact powerhouses, but if they aren't selling, the manufacturers have no choice but to ditch them & go with the norm, which is big screened phones. The fact of the matter & the sad thing is that most people that say they'd buy it, don't. Talking about how cool it is, doesn't sell them. This happens in the car market all the time.

  • I think that reasons why iPhone 12/13 Mini & Asus Zenfone 8-10 didn't sell that well are a bit different. standard iPhone (from X to now) was 5.8-6.1" & that size is still quite compact, so Apple really had less need for a Compact phone. Some people bought Minis (mainly women with small hands & pockets 🙃) but still most people went with Standard or Pro - Mini Poro didn't exist. Also that's Apple, it's religion here, people buy to those because they work or because they want to feel elite. In Android area flagship compacts are IMO a bad idea - mid-high range with compact size & smaller price but decent performance could en up better, but...IDK..? Maybe people really buy with eyes on specs & I guess ,,biggeh screehn, meahns betteh!" I own one of the best mid range phones of last years & it's 6.1" so still compact enough, performs well & battery lasts long enough. No Jack tho :( I forgot - this mid range was also competitively priced.
