Hear the Otherworldly Sounds of Skating on Thin Ice | National Geographic

This small lake outside Stockholm, Sweden, emits otherworldly sounds as Mårten Ajne skates over its precariously thin, black ice. “Wild ice skating,” or “Nordic skating,” is both an art and a science. A skater seeks out the thinnest, most pristine black ice possible-both for its smoothness, and for its high-pitched, laser-like sounds.

Black ice is recently frozen, and can be as thin as 2 inches and still support the weight of a skater. Like a dome or arch, the support comes from the sides rather than the top, and the water underneath prevents the ice from breaking. But, experience and careful advance planning are key. Factors including temperature, atmospheric conditions, and even satellite images of the Earth’s surface are considered. It’s complicated, but appealing to mathematicians like Ajne. Even with preparation, there’s a risk of falling in… So it’s best done in groups, for safety.

    • I think it is absolutely irresponsible to put this video out without a massive disclaimer in front of it to not do this. I expect people to think that shallow ice is somewhat safe to skate or walk on now, while it is actually superdangerous if you fall in. There is people and animals dying each year and there is people testing the thickness of the ice thoroughly before deeming it safe. The recommended ice thickness by DLRG (German Live Saving Organization) for still lakes is 15 centimeters and for flowing water like rivers it is 20cm. Show what happens if people break into the ice, it is superdangerous. Frankly I expected more from National Geographic. Some kid or young adult will see this - mimic this and potentially die.

  • At an inch and 3/4 thick you can actually feel the ice moving below you as it flexes with your weight. On very cold days this is easily sufficient to hold up a 140~170 pound individual on ice skates. Note the ski poles he brought with him just in case he does find a spot that is too thin. Hearing that noise brings me back to younger days of clearing the ice for hockey games. Listening to the lake make ice on those cloudless nights under the stars, while sweeping away the snow for tomorrows get together with all your local friends.😊

    • I have skated on this kind of ice, and you can see it bow under the passing skater if you lie down on the ice and look along the surface at the far shoreline. This very smooth ice feels very fast, if the temperature is just right. If you look at the ice under you as you travel, you can sometimes see the cracks form that cause that weird sound.

  • I’ve fallen through ice when skating on ponds and lakes before. If you fall through, you should turn the way you were coming from, put your upper body on the ice, make your body parallel to the ice and kick your feet to propel yourself up onto the ice. If it keeps breaking, keep swimming and break the ice in front of you with your arms if you are close to land (Moving towards the land, obviously) If you cannot kick and propel yourself on to the ice, then rest your sleeves on the ice, and hopefully they will freeze onto the surface and you will be able to pull yourself up. But really make sure you turn around and try to get onto the ice you were on before you fell in, because you know it’s solid and it most likely won’t break. If there is a strong current, do not panic, and try to keep part of your body above water and hold on to the ice. It will be difficult to hoist yourself up so hopefully you have some friends around. If not, don’t panic and try to get yourself on top of the ice. Be patient. It’s very surprising when it happens, and it is VERY fast. You fall straight through. So decisions must be made quickly, no room for panic.

I saw my father slip on the edge of our hole in the ice a couple of years ago and like you said, it's very fast. He was up on the ice in no time, luckily.

  • I remember those sounds from my youth in the Netherlands. Ice skating on black ice has become rare because of rising temperatures. But I have never skated on deep water with less than 7-10 cm (3-4 inches) of ice. And then you had/have to be lucky to be one of the firsts to have smooth ice (in an ice skating crazy country).

    @adorebecka@adorebecka2 жыл бұрын
    • You say "but here in Sweden" as if it's universally true. I have yet to have or heard of anyone who has taken the test of falling through ice in school. Perhaps it's something you do above Stockholm, i don't know for sure. But especially these days i highly doubt any school would be willing to take the risk of having kids go swimming in ice water. It's bad enough that most students today can't even swim. Schools are NOT going to risk that.

      @RealCadde@RealCadde2 жыл бұрын
    • @@RealCadde I did this two separate times in different schools below Stockholm. We don't swim around in the water we just do the exercise of 1) jumping in 2) turning around so we're facing the direction we came from and 3) get back out. we all get to try it but we don't have to do it if we don't want to, or like you said, if someone can't swim. also 4) we go in a sauna. we get to do this multiple times if we want to.
