I attended the 2022 Worldskills Welding Competition and put together a video to highlight what worldskills welding is all about.
I came away very inspired.
When you stop to consider how much effort goes into a competition like this with so many hours of practice and preparation by the competitor, educators, experts, and event organizers, its hard to understand why this story is not told more.
That's the reason for this video...to tell the story of worldskills welding and skillsUSA.

    • Given your experience and knowledge about how the industry has evolved over the years. Would you recommend welding as a career in this day and age? I’m currently saving up for welding school in Illinois. But I’ve also heard that’s not the best route to take as far as starting a welding career.

    • @@MAGA_Randy_Marsh I would still recommend welding to anybody with interest in it, even in this current time. A good welding school is highly valuable in my opinion. I started in high school and was fortunate to know welders that trained me on the job, but I know formal school would have saved me alot of hard lessons on the jobsite. Hope this helps

  • My son is a welder at Newport News Shipbuilders where they build the Navy’s aircraft carriers and nuclear powered submarines. In a company with literally thousands of welders welding all day doing one-of-a kind stuff, of course extreme talent becomes apparent. My son said he was in a submarine and there was a guy welding threads onto a bolt. I mean it was a kind of rod that a welder was “manufacturing” into a bolt by creating the threads on it. I can’t even comprehend the level of skill for that.

  • I competed at one of these competitions in Canada (Skills Canada vs World Skills). It was an insane experience. This is I'm assuming Worlds, so it wasn't exactly the same. But it was in this huge conference centre, masses of people came in to watch. I was making welds in those UV protection curtain "booths," while people were taking pictures and videos, stopped for lunch, and finished up. I ended up getting second place, and it was super close. The guy that beat me mustve ended up down there at Worlds. No grinding, no cutting, no stray arcs, the piece is graded on accuracy to the print and of course your welds. Cool experience, crazy stressful, though. Glad to have had that experience, I had an amazing teacher to whom I owe a lot of that success.

  • I'm only a hobbyist welder, but I always find myself inspecting others welds. One way of relaxation after work, as a tower crane operator, was to fire up my engine driven Thermal Arc portable welder to practice overhead and vertical welding. As I was doing this, one of the inspectors happened to be walking by and looked at my welds. He said, "I'd sign those off." Made my day.

  • I’m a DIY/farm “welder”… I’ve taken community college intro classes, and probably burned 5,000 rods of 6011 and 7018 in my life. Last summer I tried to repair a steel hydraulic reservoir on a tractor. No pressure, it just had to hold some hydraulic fluid like a bowl holds water… after three failed attempts, including one attempt at brazing, I finally gave up and used silicone and self-tapping screws, which are still holding today. I couldn’t even weld something to hold 1 PSI… I simply can’t IMAGINE welding something to hold 1,000 PSI, let alone make anything so pretty. Huge respect for these guys and for real welders everywhere.

(What a "good Man that guy was / is!) What a "blast" that was! I loved the instructors. All instructors took each class over, only permitting the "non-dominant hand". I knew some remarkable folks. I also had friends that went to Lincoln E., the company that built the "best stick machine" in the world! My compliments to the Japanese & Korean "Gold Medal" guys ... quite a feat! When the "arc is on", every mistake is captured in time! (When I went to "school", no grinders were permitted, we used passive helmets (my favorite is still the 951-P), and we used "short stub electrode holders", which I still use today. I just can't use the spring clamp, it's like going to bat with a toothpick versus a Louisville Slugger! Thanks for posting!!!! I may be looking at a training gig in Thailand. (The Thais could use some help).

  • I couldn't tell a tig-weld from a mig-weld but this stuff is amazing! These pieces and the welds are so good that they're almost art!

  • Jody it would be really cool to see you make one of the pressure vessels like in the competition and weld it out for a video. Would love to see that
