Hello everyone.
Today, I recorded a video comparing the differences in welding current sizes when creating a large weld bead in T-joint welding.
What is the difference between welding multiple layers with low current and single layer welding with high current?
1. In terms of visual aspect, both produce good weld beads.
2. The work speed is faster when single-layer welding is performed with high current.
3. Weld bead color is better for low current welding.
4. When low heat input is desired, welding multiple layers with low current is better than welding with high current.
5. When the current is high, the heat input is high, but the welding heat distortion is surprisingly small. Even if welding is done with a low current and reduced heat input, welding distortion occurs more when multiple layers are welded.
There are pros and cons like these.
It will be helpful to refer to these contents when you need to TIG weld thick metal.
In the future, we will compare the differences in other situations.

  • This is great information--often, hotter settings actually mean less heat input, less distortion, and less time into the finished product BUT read the WPS and see what is allowed BEFORE you set everything on kill. Cutting out good welds because you didn't follow the WPS makes for a long day.

    • This is interesting and impressive for a video but that's about it. There is a reason why many stainless procedures only allow for a few inches at a time. Creating a big puddle that looks like it is washed in at the edges doesn't mean the weld has penetrated properly. With the low slow method you get penetration across the entire weld. The hot and fast method the penetration is just down the middle. Not much different than running hardwire with a big puddle and without any movement.

  • I would probably do a single root pass at high current and the cap it with a second pass at lower current. The high current pass appears to maybe be undercut where it ties in to the plates. But the real issue here for allot of welders is with the current. 330+ Amps is more than out of reach for allot of welding rigs. Further you need a larger water cooled torch setup as well. Most of the torches I see are 250A and when pushed can actually burn up the wire in the hose. Go ahead and ask me why I know this! So unless you have a supply like say a Miller Dynasty 700 and a 400Amp torch kit you are gonna be using low current. This guy is a kick ass welder though.

  • Just remember pro welders it's not about what he is welding for, it's about demonstrating teqnique and comparing high vs low amps. This isnt a guide to welding thick plate correctly.

  • High current tends to undercut more. On extremely thick steel that I weld in the oilfield, I run heavy hot passes for my fill to limit distortion and for speed, then cap the weld with a lower current setting to get that nice appearance.

  • 결국에는 히트 인풋이 디스토션을 결정하는건데 디스토션이 적은 쪽이 열입력이 적은 겁니다. 낮은 암페어의 멀티패스가 높은 암페어의 싱글패스보다 열입력 왜곡이 더 높죠. 대신 높은 암페어의 싱글패스는 필렛시엔 각목이 오목하게 나올 가능성이 있죠.

  • Nice clear demostraion with no touch downs lol well if you get the penetration and no shrinkage or tearing from the weld to the material with one pass then do it, as shown it is far quicker. but not all thickness and types of stainless steel can benifit from it, as yours looks like its bin cut from flat sheet hot formed, so it means it is a softer stainless so you get less stress well there is a fast amount of types from the metals used down to the procces of making it like cold formed to hot formed and treated to un treatred and so on so do a weld test then cut through the weld and check to make sure all is good, but for hobbyist well try and it and decide. for the pro jobs, it comes down to the certification approval and after 30 years causious welding wins hands down as if you try to cut corners it allways bites you in the ass :)

    • @@RonanABR helium or pure argon give a cleaner weld at high temp it does not increase enough higher temperature for welding At high amp of around 400 welding I use a mix of the two To make sure no imperfections in the root and the main and cap Because when you lay wekds on top of the previous one you get a gas and metal contamination which arises from the next weld if you don't have a good clean gas shield around the tungsten As seen in the video all looks good but only a cut of the weld and atmomise test would clarify the contamination I have to do such on aerospace products to get the certificate for the client But anyway the guy is no amateur and does show he has a great skill And would give him a 9/10 It's just nice to comment so others can get a better understanding how complicated it is to get a perfect weld that ticks all the boxes

    • @@RonanABR it's because he can lol Anyway one should always have enough patience to perform a tidy weld Regardless of it not being perfect or theirs no point welding as said before If you rush or cut corners then your most likely spend time correcting By any means I'm perfect but each time you weld then try to be And I try to be or I would give up and go do another job lol Oh I never mentioned why you should do a small weld first It's because of the factor of the weld shinks So if you lay a big weld in one go the pulling of the weld when cooling will pull the material massively As can be seen in the video As when he started the parts were level flush to the angle And was not bad on the lower amp and more runs But on the high amp at one run the material pulled /shunk so much it probably pulled by about 3 degrees And you can see it rocking unevenly So hence it bites you in the ass lol And to say you can hear the weld fracturing/tearing as it cool under the stress

  • 뒷 테그가 없으면 여러번 용접한것이 식으면서 응축해서 쪼그라들었고 한번에 과대 각장을 만든용접은 크랙에 취약하여 쉽게 부러집니다. 4번 용접한것이 튼튼하고 크랙이 가지않습니다. 빽을 내지않는 부분은 과대전압을 사용하면 불량품이 됩니다. 빽을 내는곳에는 마음대로 과대전류로 용접해도 상관없습니다. 90도 각도에서 크랙발생이 당장은 나타나지 않지만 각도가 45도 40도에서는 크랙은 더 쉽게 발생됩니다.

  • Not bas but your toes lines are patruding from the patent material, if you dont grind them in or stone flat MT (magnetic partical testing) your weld is going to be glowing. Not bad tho, all the swipming and back and forth would make me worry about lamination as well.

  • Your test is like comparing apples to oranges. You cannot compare high current to low current by using different diameter filler rods, due to the weld deposition rate will be considerably different. Your low current welds were made with a 2.4mm diameter filler rod and high current weld was with a 4mm diameter filler rod. Your low current setting was at 159 amps so would have been able to run the 4mm rod without any issues to achieve a higher deposition rate resulting with fewer passes resulting in less distortion. I challenge you to do this test again using only one size filler rod on both tests.

  • I had to fill up my cold chisel butt today, some dopey f*** decided to blow a chunk out of the handle while cutting a truck floor out with plasma torch. This is before I watched this.. probably shouldve gone hotter, to establish a real sized puddle faster, slammed some filler in to keep it cooler, but the end heat affected zone is still nowhere near the actual tool tip. No harm, no loss.. i wouldve thrown the chisel out if it was anywhere near the working edge. Steel chipping in your hand is definitely not ideal. Still not sure how hard I can hit it anymore though

  • "Color" - это что за критерий оценки такой? Для каких-нибудь декоративных валиков такое может и ок , но в промышленной сварке - на кой? То же и с "heat input", нет предпочтения меньшего большему, или наоборот, есть металлургия сварочного шва с необходимым в данном конкретном случае heat input, при котором прочностные качества оптимально соотносятся с производительностью процесса.
