Neutron stars are one of the most extreme and violent things in the universe. Giant atomic nuclei, only a few kilometers in diameter but as massive as stars. And they owe their existence to the death of something majestic.

  • I'm really happy that Kurzgesagt remade this video. I already thought that their original video on Neutron Stars was brilliant, but it seems that enough progress was made in both science and the development of this channel that they felt it necessary to have another go at making an improved version- and what a corker it is! There was no mention of _nuclear pasta_ in the last one for sure!

    • @@2009samiy Huff, bro, you're going to have to get a lot more compelling both scientifically and philosophically if you're going to tempt me into believing the same god created the immeasurable heavens, the infintescimately small atoms which they are made of AND the cordycepts fungi which can only exist by controlling your mind and make all your internal organs bust out your forehead so it can start it's life cycle again. For every one absolutely brilliant absolutely incomprehensible thing I see which I could attribute to God, I am instantly reminded of the cruelty of existence and how their is no Abrahmamic god with the imagination to design something like ebola. You wanna say god exists? I'll agree. I've met them. You wanna say "his" name is "Allah"? I'll tell you that a 6000 year old book cannot comprehend the true majesty of the awesome boundless existence and the astounding solitude of earth's isolation. Also you didn't mention a neatron star once, so you can do one in that regard too. Way to compliment your maker's talents 😑

    • They could do with remaking it again and mentioning (and animating) Neutron Degeneracy Pressure (that stops the collapsing core of the star becoming a black hole), and also the 'R-Process' which makes the heavier elements in a kilonova. Also: their pronunciation of magnetars seems a bit off. They could do with explaining magnetars a bit more (like: how they're formed, and also that they're potentially one of the most dangerous objects in a galaxy). Also: they didn't even mention starquakes and the possible relationship between those and fast GRBs.

  • It's wild to me that something so ridiculously, incredibly extreme could have irregularities in its surface at all, let alone "a few centimeters high"-- the idea of a neutron star, this impossibly dense ball of particles, could have a surface rough enough that you could actually hypothetically _see_ its irregularities with the _naked eye,_ is mind-boggling to me. I would have imagined it to be completely uniform

  • Been watching a lot of various videos on neutron and magnetar stars lately. Because these objects can actually bend light, sometimes I think that black holes are just neutron stars that are extra heavy or dense, with all of the space between the atoms completely squeezed out. This would make it’s gravity pass the threshold where light can’t escape.

  • *To the Kurzgesagt translator for the channel's Spanish subs* : There's a *massive mistake* in the Spanish translation that's repeated in every video: numbers beyond 1 billion are always wrong, as they aren't converted from short scale (used in English) to long scale (used in Spanish): thus, "billions" are wrongly translated into "billones", "trillions" into "trillones", etc. Those are _false friends_ because, actually, 1 billion [in English] = 1000 millones [in Spanish], NOT "1 billón"; likewise, 1 trillion in English = 1 billón in Spanish; and so on. These mistakes are present in every Kurzgesagt video I've seen with Spanish subs and therefore the quantities are wrong by a huge order of magnitude. Please correct them so people don't get the wrong info. *[Explanation:]* This is because Anglo-Saxon countries use the "short scale system", while Hispanic and continental-Europe countries use the "long scale". In the first case, "one billion" means "a thousand millions" (1,000,000,000), whereas in the long scale, "one billion" equals "a million millions" (1,000,000,000,000), also called "a milliard". The Italian subs, for example, got this right and translated the English word "billion" into "miliardi". (The only correct translation in this video is "1 million" to "1 millón", since both scales coincide in using that same word for the number 1,000,000.)

When you look out beyond and discover the true nature of the universe, it is spiritual and uplifting in an incomparable way, but it is also often scary and humbling. You can tell this shit wasn't conceived by the mind of a human, it is something much greater than that. The true stories of our origins and creation leave me speechless.

  • I like the voice of this narrator. That British accent. Very soothing and just nice. I like how he doesn’t pronounce supernova emphasizing the “a” at the end lol. He would have failed vocabulary in grade school here 😂 I also love learning about neutron stars. They aren’t as extreme as black holes, but we know way more about neutron stars so it kinda makes them more interesting in some ways. Also lots of scientists think it’s neutron stars that gave our advanced life possible. Kilonovas (collision of binary neutron stars) giving heavy elements that created us. Not to mention they may harbor strange matter (which might be what we know as dark matter). It’s pretty cool to think about. Wish I understood it all better.
