  • We had a unique experience with our oldest cat. We already had a wonderful 4 year old Labrador, Lily, when we brought Junie to our home as a tiny kitten. Junie instantly bonded with us and Lily. Lily wasn’t so thrilled about having this tiny kitten following her every move, chasing her wagging tail, or being used as a cuddly warm spot to sleep on. Lily was a trooper, and the two of them became the best of friends. Fast forward 3 years. Lily goes to a vet for an orthopedic surgical procedure. Complications occurred during the surgery, and within 2 days, we lost our beloved girl , Lily. That fast, she was gone. We were all devastated, heartbroken and in mourning . Over a period of 6 months, Junie had a rapid decline in health. He also started biting, as well as a host of other concerning problems. We had taken him to the vet, several times. Other than weight loss and this new aggression, he was otherwise considered healthy. We tried everything. Nothing worked, and Junie started declining even more rapidly. About 8 months had passed since Lily’s death, and while Spring cleaning, I found one of her old squeaky tennis balls in the house. I became emotional and decided to keep it. Junie was sleeping in our sons room at the time, and heard me squeak the tennis ball. He came running out, tail high in the air, sniffed the tennis ball, and started running all around the house, making his chirping noice he would make, when He and Lily would play. Junie looked everywhere. It was then, I realized he was just as traumatized as we were over the loss of Lily, and was frantically looking for her. I had not seen Junie this happy or active in months!! Although emotionally we were not ready for another dog, we made the decision to start looking. Maybe it would help Junie. We found another Lab, and named her Ellie. Ellie was a puppy, and a spitfire. She was just what we all needed, including Junie. Most importantly, Junie’s health started to improve at warp speed. His appetite and sweet disposition returned. Junie instantly loved this new, little barking, pudgy puppy. Ellie is now 5 and Junie is now 9. We have also added a new addition to the mix. A loving Ragdoll, Waylon. The furry kids are the best of pals. Apologies for the lengthy reply, but this segment made me realize, sometimes you really need to look outside of the box when it comes to our cats physical and mental health. We are thankful everyday for finding lily’s tennis ball. Without it, I’m sure Junie wouldn’t be with us today. Happy, loving and in excellent health. 🥎

    • Yes pets misses each other that's for sure I lost my cat Bella and all her kittens as .other nature didn't let it happened she had to be put to sleep ny dog Bonny was looking for her I know she misses her but now we adopted this stray cat from human society it's not friendly it hides all the time and doesn't want to be friends with my chiuahuas I'm hoping she'll stop growling at my dogs as they're very small much smaller then this cat Either we might bring her back but I want to give her time but if so we would adopt a kitten this way the kitten will play with my dogs n be friends that's all I really want is an affectionate kitty not one that I have to worry about at night I sleep with a rash and my dogs ?!!!

    • Everytime someone talks to me about a pet's behavior changing after the loss of another pet, I am like, "hey, your dog needs a dog" or "your cat needs a dog" or "your cat needs a cat" etc. I think it is easier to see from the outside what is going on for a lot of reasons, mostly though that I am not actively in grief and the family is. Glad you wrote this comment. Hope lots of people read it and are helped by it.

    • My cat sleeps with me and three dogs, snuggled in amongst us. He missed my rescue terrier that had raised him when the terrier died, but attached to another terrier who. Had been taught to groom and play with the kitty. Other cats in the house made him very stressed however.

  • As someone with high-functioning Autism, I do not like loud noises at all. It creates stress, anxiety, and panic attacks in my experiences. Many people do not understand this. I also have very sensitive hearing. I also don't like sudden change. I remember when I was little, my parents would ask me if I wanted to move my bed in a different area. I always said no because I liked it where it was. I did not like it when the furniture was changed to different areas. I remember I was upset when they moved my sister's crib to a different location in her room. I also don't like it when people try to randomly throw things in my schedule, like some family trips. It builds up stress and anxiety.

    @warner2410js@warner2410js2 жыл бұрын
    • @Diana Moore You are so correct!! My Molly passed away 8/30 and she was hyperthyroid, plus in renal failure for 7 years before she passed. She lived a good long life, to the age of 21. Being hyperthyroid she was thirsty a lot, so that helped with hydration. I still added water to her wet food , it's so important. I want to add, as our cats age, they seem to be a bit more touchy. We don't know how they feel, it's so important to show them love, without annoying them. My vet & I discussed this and it really helps. I would make sure I petted her, massaged her neck & ears, gave her kisses, w/o aggravating her. I would buy special treats, like fish from Culver's, oh she gobbled that up!! (I would check with your vet first). I really believe all the xtra love helped her to live a long good life!! 🐈♥️🥰🐾

    • I had an older cat. He hated being forced to take medication so much that he just accepted it. He got to the point were anything I gave him, he would just eat it because he knew, If he didnt he would be forced to. Give your cats the option to take meds freely first then force them. You will be surprised how fast they pick up on the fact they are given a chance to take it on there own volition. I have 4 cats now. I used that experience. All of my cats will take there meds when I want them to. I guess it only take a couple of pills being forced down your neck to understand.

  • I have a cat backpack. Not one of those mostly-enclosed plastic ones, it's a "Fat Cat Backpack". There's tons of room in there for my 10lb cat, but I have it for my 17lb Maine Coon. I live on the 23rd floor, and found that if there's an emergency (Like a fire) where I need to exit, carrying both of them down 23 flights of stairs is just too much. So he goes into the backpack, which makes him *much* easier to manage. It's a tight fit. He needs to duck a bit in order to fit, because he's a long cat (38" nose to tip of tail) so it's only intended for short trips. Every weekend I take him down to the lobby of our building in it and he gets his Very Favorite Treat. He hops out (on harness and leash) hangs out for 30min to an hour and people watches and then hops back in the backpack to let me know he's ready to go home. That way, if it's ever an emergency, he's not being shoved into something unfamiliar.

  • So so so on the nose! Exactly about cleaning the litter daily. My kittehs can't flush their toilet and how unfair if one doesn't help them with that daily. It brought to mind about cleaning wet food dishes daily. Fresh water twice daily. At least in my home. I don't like eating off a dirty plate or one that hasn't been rinsed well enough of dish soap. Could make for a sick cat with the runs. While on the subject of feeding, I haven't yet watched all your videos yet so I thought to mention about feeding cats from a wide dish or bowl so as not to cause whisker fatigue. I've only recently learned about that and how it can be pretty awful for one's furkid. You are such a brilliant and intuitive good doctor! Thank you so much for your know how!!!

    @AdamSharpe-ih8xz@AdamSharpe-ih8xz Жыл бұрын
    • It makes me so mad when people neglect to wash their plates properly or change their litter and water often enough. Those ppl should not own a sensitive kitty. My cats would only drink fresh water and eat off clean ceramic plates and that's why they all lived 2 decades and never got sick!

  • I have cats and only one litter box because my male jumps out the window to go to the bathroom. Now my the female barely uses hers because she's started to do the same. Saves us money on litter big time! I'm so surprised at how fast she caught on too. She was a stray we took in that the neighbors neglected and from birth she never was inside a house. I couldn't believe how she instantly used her litter box almost as soon as I pu it together! First time cat owner here! Always had dogs and they always had to be trained and it was hard to get them to go in the right places. The cats are a lot easier! I was in shock! My other cat is older so he has wisdom. He taught her to go outside. Amazing animals!

  • With supply chain issues getting my cat's favorite (no, only wet food) has been difficult. I am one who believes cats understand our language because it is essential to their life. So I tell her that I know the food I got is not the one she wants and that I know that I know this will not do for more than 2 days. She actually seems to respond and eats the food I provide... Well, that is as long as I get the good stuff in 2 days!

  • I like your videos very much I'm very happy that you're spreading knowledge to the the pet owners out there that need information to better care for their pets. I find your information is true and correct. I respect your opinion and your points are valid in a generalized scared shelter cat way. As a companion animal expert specializing in ragdolls. I have an opposing viewpoint. I'm a breeder of ragdolls I just must disagree with your not not don't rules. I raise my kittens more intuitively using only what I have learned from them about their likes and dislikes. What their ok with and can learn, not other humans. I don't like the whole not changing anything because that's not real life and it is what what perpetuates these percieved issues and restrictions about cat ownership. I know 100% if you change everything from their birth they adapt. When they're a young kitten, you take them for rides in the car, put them in the crate, walk them around on a leash, You laugh loud, you play music, Use the vacuum, pop the trash bags, use power tools, you live life. That is what makes the very best cats. The very companion animal that we're all searching for. My kittens are exceptional. They grow up with a tremendous courage and ability to go on adventures and do wonderful things. They're smart. They're engaged. They want to be involved with whatever you're doing. They're trained easily for future exposures. As long as you're trust and love bond is strong. If you do all these things. In a consistent and safe way that's just normal for them. So this...don't do this, don't do that.... i'm saying, I break every one of these rules and my kittens are awesome. Ride or die companion cats 🐈

She really, really hated the classic, plastic carrier and would growl and fight me when I tried to put her into it. • My 3yo male cat had to be on medication for 4 months due to crystals in his bladder + kidney infection and after the first month of giving him his capsules (2x a day) coated w creamy treats, he started looking forward to his meds. So much so that I'd put the capsules, naked, in his food bowl, he'd gobble them up and then get treats and pets. But the moment his treatment was over and he felt better, he forgot all about it. Deworming him is a task now. Also, his cat carrier is a cozy comfy cat cave for most of the year but he figures out when it's time to go to the vet and then I have to force him in there. He's the best.

  • The carrier issue is easily solved by leaving one or two carriers permanently in your house/apartment in some safe places with nice blankets/toys. My cats now love them, sleep in them, eat, even play a little. I have no issues anymore transportinf them. The car issue has been partly solved as my favorite vet is very close by so the drive in the car inside a carrier is short, 5-6 minutes.

  • #11 Petting them backwards. I discovered with my cat at least that she gets incredibly annoyed when i pet her backwards (bum to head) When she's in the mood to grapple and lures me in with fake welcoming belly exposure just to wrap me up and start kicking away, sometimes she get's a bit too much into it and hurts. All i do is a quick gentle neck to head stroke and she lets me go lol. So now she has associated that as a punishment when she gets naughty or too aggressive.

  • I trained my younger cat from a lil kitten to be ok with water and I'd actually recommend getting cats to at a minimum tolerate bathing because it's way more stressful for both if you have to wash an elderly arthritic or chubby cat that can nolonger clean themself well enough. My cat gets a bath 2x a year just to reinforce it. He's totally fine with it, loves the scrubbing and scratches and will even purr sometimes. He does have to air dry cuz he isn't fine with the blow dryer

    @dalekcat@dalekcat Жыл бұрын
    • Just make sure you wrap him in a few dry towels then. They can catch chills which can be serious for a cat. There's a box dryer you put them in that's just hit the market that's silent. It's the noise they hate with the hairdryer

But I digress. One cat runs under the bed when ever I pull my keys out from my pocket and the other would go investigate a bomb that just went off. Not that that happens in my house a lot. . . just the right amount, I think. . . But I love them both! Sammy and Dino. . Because they are the "Rat Pack!" (Dino is a tuxedo cat)

  • Both my cats love tummy rubs and neither one hates water (although I do not bathe them). They do not react negatively to being petted almost everywhere, but these two (and two who is no longer alive) are very different than the many many cats that I have been owned by in my 67 years. Also both these cats fetch and come when called. Probably because they are mese mixes, lol

  • Dr. Sarah, thank you so much for your videos! My boy has a hard time taking his cat lax. But he has to because he's a Maine Coonie with long hair and he cleans a lot. So he ends up with constipation pretty often. I put off giving it to him because I dread it so much. Can you suggest an easy way to give it to him? He's a good boy, but hates cat lax time. I have tasted it, it doesn't have much of a taste so that's not the problem. It's me sticking my finger in his mouth he hates, but how else am I supposed to do it?

  • I have recently adopted a young cat. We already have an older cat and have had no incidents. We use pee pads with the older cat. The younger cat isn't having it. In fact, she defecates in the bathroom sink. I know that we are trying to get her to do something that isn't natural for a cat to do (i.e. the pee pads), but we are trying to keep down the smells and litter dust. How can I discourage this bathroom behavior and get her to defecate on the pad instead?

She use to adjust very well when she had her brother but her brother died couple months ago. Now I noticed she is way more whiny , getting constipated when she never use to. There isn’t anything I can really do about it except giving her anti anxiety meds ( tgat I think is what caused the constipation ) she is 15 and nobody I know will take her in while I travel a lot for work.

  • @AllAboutCats - my kitten Deluxe barely survived FPV as a very young small kitten…. As you know the fatality rate is extremely high and almost always fatal in Kittens., HERE I AM 3 months later… all of the rest of my cats have gotten their FPV booster shots due to Deluxe contracting it… everyone is healthy now.. however Deluxe still requires his prescription nausea medication (as needed now instead of daily.. but it still is needed 3-4 days per week) .. he has sporadic depression… and the smallest URI for example that would typically run a 14 day course through a healthy cat and go away… is a potentially fatal event due to Deluxe having lowered blood cell counts and the FPV actually attacking his bone marrow… so the extra precautions I have to take each and every day truly is beyond anything I would have ever imagined.. I would sincerely if you did a video titled “A Cats Life After Surviving FPV” this video ideally would 1.) tell what FPV is.. 2.) let individuals know why the vaccinations are important and how it is everywhere in the environment 3.) the survival rate after FPV is confirmed 4.) and most importantly LIFE AFTER SURVIVING.. I would love to know YOUR knowledge regarding LIFE AFTER FPV.. because It seems I am experiencing new things every week, sometimes multiple new things a day. Like you were saying about rare exceptions to tummy rubs.. well Deluxe is no longer capable of pooping on his own. He requires extra fiber in his diet daily.. and at times he has to be put in a bath so I can assist him while he is pushing in order for him to properly relieve himself. He specifically comes up to me at least 5+ nights per week and rolls right over needed a stomach massage to help loosen feces compacted in his intestines… :-( Please do a video on this topic it is so important as I never understand FPV until it struck my Deluxe “Special” Edition before he was even 8 weeks of age (which is typically the age a kitten is vaccinated) his brother Braxton did not survive and passed away 8 hours after his diagnosis. :-( Thank you for your Time
