Why Chelsea's Cole Palmer Is Having An INCREDIBLE Season

2024 ж. 15 Сәу.

Cole Palmer bagged an incredible FOUR goals in Chelsea's demolition of Everton, taking him to the very top of the Premier League scoring charts. Putting aside the tension with Nicholas Jackson and Noni Madueke over the penalty, the game neatly illustrated just why he's had such an incredible first season under Mauricio Pochettino. Adam Clery looks at the goals, the player, and the numbers, to show just how special a player he's already become.

  • Essentially City gave their closest player to KDB back to Chelsea to pay them back for getting KDB.

    • One thing I think would maybe have held Palmer back at City is there are long periods of games where the players almost have to curb their natural instincts and stick to the plan in possession. Works great for KDB but you sense Palmer would find that hugely limiting. Glad he's somewhere that's a lot more chaotic lol

    • @@FourFourTwoI mean, that's why KBD has some friction with Pep at times. KBD wants to be creative and makes passes that will raise Pep's blood pressure. Palmer doesn't have the resume to take those actions yet in a Pep team like KBD. And he wouldn't get that resume if he stayed at City.

  • The guy's insane. We've had players before who give off that confident aura of not caring (Hazard, Havertz, etc...) but he's next level. Cold Palmer isn't a cute joke, he's the fearlessness of youth personified. Southgate's a fool if he doesn't take him this summer, for my money he should start. He's exactly what England (historically) lack in big match situations at major tournaments - composure.

  • I think that a double pivot of Gallagher and Caicedo actually gives our midfield a much better balance than the Fernandez Caicedo partnership. Gallagher is simply a far superior athlete to Enzo which means he can participate in the press and offer defensive cover. Palmer will get the headlines-deservedly so because he was amazing and has been all season-but Gallagher is wildly underrated and had, I think, a huge impact on the quality of Chelsea’s midfield this game.

    @aidanmason2498@aidanmason2498Ай бұрын
    • Agreed, also Caicedo looked better with Gallagher in the pivot with him

      @michaelglynn7010@michaelglynn7010Ай бұрын
    • That’s because the Everton game plan was to avoid the midfield area of the pitch. Caicedo has to play more defensively against possession based teams because both Lavia and Ugochukwu are injured, and Gallagher can’t play as a DM.

      @warwicks2780@warwicks2780Ай бұрын
    • The thing is that this season Enzo and Caicedo are supposed to be the double pivot but Poch plays Enzo much higher up the field and plays Caicedo as the lone man CDM which isn’t really what they were bought for. That’s why Gallagher and Caicedo played well was because it was a double pivot. Both Enzo and Caicedo are supposed to be deeper with Enzo dictating play and Caicedo playing the role in which he did against Everton with an actual number 10 in front of them instead of Gallagher, which is what Poch hasn’t played all season rather than against Everton and it worked. But Poch doesn’t observe this but rather play an unbalanced midfield like what we played against Sheffield

Hazard used to stand one foot away from the ball, look at the gk once in the eyes and then look at the ball until he kicks it the other way. Palmer stands a few feet away and never looks at the gk or anything except the fans at the back lmao. Balotelli would stand on the ball and literally just stare the gk down the entire time lmao. Those are my 3 favorite penalty takers in recent memory. Honorable mentions are Jorginho, Bruno Fernandez and Ivan Toney.

  • I've been saying this all season 😭. Literally every point he made. Watching him, his goals, his penalties, his underlying stats, him vs Bowen etc. Feel like anyone who's been watching him and has gone through the advanced metrics just gets it. And then you have all the people who very clearly don't watch him and just look at the scoresheet or the highlights, see 9 penalties and somehow come to the conclusion that's all hes good for. If anything his 100% conversion rate with all the distractions and pressure moments just adds to how good he's been. Most of us know he's an unbelievably technically gifted player but the pens actually show his mentality which is equally as impressive. Think slowly, game by game, more people are opening their eyes to just how good he is and how good he may become. But a lot of people are sleeping. Then in 2 or 3 seasons he'll finally start to get recognition from the people that dont like to give new players the credit they deserve straight away. Best player in England for me this season and one of the best players in the world. Only reason he wont get the individual awards at the end of the season is because you need trophies for that. But he's up there with the very best.

  • What we don't see for the 3rd goal is that Onana was the one that gestured for the pass. Thats why Pickford didn't use the other options. Not letting him off the hook though but it goes a way to explain why he sent the pass there. Secondly Palmer wouldn't have flourished this way at City. His free role allows him to do all of this n we know with Pep there isn't something like freedom for expression. Credit to Poch because in the beginning he started witv Penalty goals n now he's evolving to a scary goal scorer in game. Setpiece specialist next?

  • Chances created is directly proportional to shots taken. Chelsea players don't take many shots. They'll either take a touch or pass the ball while inside the box.

    • You'd love to have seen a season of it but I can't imagine Palmer having anywhere near as much fun in a system where both the centre-forward and number 10 roles are so routinely locked down in-game. He'd have been told to stay as wide as possible in the final third and what a waste that would be.

      @FourFourTwo@FourFourTwoАй бұрын

    • Yeah there's maybe a video in this as well. I think Fernendez is a wonderful player but he really needs to be in more of a calm/possession side. Struggles with how all-action Chelsea's midfield needs to be on occasion.

If he doesn't drop his performance next season, he'll be around 150 by next summer and I doubt they'll sell him for less than 200.
