Worst thing about something like this is is shatters your confidence in the vehicle. You can't trust it to get you where you want to go anymore.

At least the wipers work so you can see perfectly that you're not going anywhere

Well, at least we know for sure that GM is keeping the same quality into their EV line 😂.
There's something to be said for consistency!
With all the electrical issues in other GM's I am not at all surprised they are multiplied in their EV lineup.
LMFAO, GMC aint the one to be a Tesla killer. Call that idiot Mary Barra to come and get it. I bet its not cheap to get a 7500 lb truck towed.
I was just going to mention that. ”A Chevy that has electrical issues?!”.

I’ll keep that in mind if there is a war. We can use the new Hummer EV as a 9000lb roadblock.
And then shoot the battery when the enemy gets close. It will start a fire that they won't be able to put out.
U wont be able to charge it in the next war . Also there will never be a reason to road block within the continent . You'll be wanting the roads clear..if you're alive .

Thanks for taking one for the team. How many will never buy this GM JUNK now?
The fact that Onstar was almost useless is the most damning part of this story. With a little help they could've had that Hummer back on the road in a few minutes. Instead of telling you how to open the hood they sent a tow truck.
But first they wanted you to pay more money for their garbage service. That lead weight will disappear in time along with all of GM's other flops.
How is onstar useless if they sent a tow truck?
@@scottreasons4746 If I understood this situation the problem was that they didn't know how to pop the hood, so they couldn't reboot the truck. I blame OnStar for not being ready with some simple troubleshooting tips. That being said "useless" is probably too strong a word.
@@TerryPullen I see buddy its all good!!
Many new smart phones can call for emergency during a crash so OnStar is truly useless ita not an over statement Also with mandates for authority's to be able to shut down cars in the near future it's hard to believe they couldnt fix or reboot the hummer from onstar
Shout out to the tow truck driver. What a nice guy!
Longmont, CO former resident here. I can vouch that it’s a perfectly good place to drive through on your way to somewhere else. Completely adequate.
For such a pricy purchase, I'm thinking GM should have a 24/7 engineer on call for emergencies.
But only for those who purchased the additional premium service subscription.... What a just sad
LOL you are lucky if you get to speak to a dude from Philippines or India.
Just buy a Tesla
more like it guy needed than an engineer...
@@austinpowers1999 You mean the Tesla truck that will be released just any moment now?
I was one of the engineers assisting with some of the testing for the Hummer EV. At one point the lead test engineer said he needed my help to open the hood, since it turns out the hood is both power operated and software controlled. If the auxiliary battery of your Hummer EV dies, it will prevent the hood from opening, preventing you from accessing the dead battery, basically sealing itself inside. Additionally, this battery cannot be charged nor accessed anywhere from outside the vehicle. A bit like James May's Tesla battery issue but far far worse. There is a manual open underneath the dash, but it has to be yanked on really really hard with a wrench. I chuckled to the lead test engineer saying "doesn't this seem like it would be a huge problem?" And he replied "yeah, it isn't the first time this has happened".. but seeing this made it to production I guess they didn't care. Don't know why absolutely every feature needs to be electric, sometimes those good old mechanical bits should just stay mechanical, even on the cars of the future.
That battery should be able to recharge from the main battery with a bypass switch. I'm sure it gets low after being in the factory parking lot for who knows how long and flashers, radio, lights will contribute to the injury.
I remember seeing a video of someone trying to fix a semi new Jaguar, the battery was in the boot but had gone flat, but the boot had to be opened electronically with a solenoid, which obviously couldn't happen as the solenoid had no power
Why tf would I or anyone else buy this shot? I can do lots of my own repairs on mechanical vehicles. I’ll keep driven gas powered until they are no more. This whole thing is just a money/power grab by elites. The auto Industry already makes more off of repairs than sales. This will also put small shops out of business as only dealerships will be equipped to repair. The whole thing is not for the benefit of Americans
I bought a Mini SE because it's simple, open the hood and there is the battery, normal door handles etc. Been totally reliable and get 4.6 miles per KW. It actually saves you money and energy which is the point of an EV anyway.
I have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler. It has manual crank windows, manual door locks, you start it with a real key, and unlock the doors wit a real key. Everything works fine. Sometimes, simple is best.
I have a friend that just bought one of these and he’s had nothing but problems as well. Less the 1500 Miles the same thing happened 3x. He’s having Buyers remorse and returning it to the dealership.

That hood release ring under the dash is a good thing to know! No matter whether it is full electric or hybrid, it's valuable to know where the 12 volt battery (usually an AGM sealed lead acid) is, and how to get to it, when everything goes 'dead'. I've had to disconnect the 12 volt battery to reset my 2006 second generation Toyota Prius hybrid. Make sure you keep the tools necessary in the car/truck, so you can actually disconnect the battery terminal.

"Turning to turn it off was not the best idea". Spending 150k on it was an even worse idea,
It’s on page 350/352 in the manual. It’s basically recommending to lower the suspension, put vehicle in service mode, and put it in neutral. It will stay in neutral up to a certain speed.
Most owners probably do not even know that even a 10,000 lbs megabatterypack EV still has an ancient 12V battery hidden somewhere. That they can't reach in an emergency 🙂
That is my greatest fear with my Mercedes EQS which does not permit access to the frunk where the 12v battery is located. I will probably get a new one every 36 months to avoid a similar experience.
I’m going to be honest no I wouldn’t have thought that it had a regular battery I thought that it all ran off of the big powerful battery, of course I have never owned a electric vehicle.

All I could think while watching this was "F that software running my car s*hit." The only time I've had a similar situation with the H3 was when I accidentally hit the "low" button not long after purchase. Thank God I was in a parking lot AND had a hardcopy manual. The mechanical engineer hops out and says I've got this, opens up the hood pokes around for a bit can't seem to find any kind of issue. Civil engineer expects the road determines that it is in good order. Finally the computer engineer steps up and says I've got this one, no problem. The computer engineer closes all the windows, turns it off, turns back on it says, look at that it's working again.

As an engineer in the automotive electrified power train industry (FCA), I watched this video with great interest. It was in a sense, a little frustrating for me, because I was trying to talk to the screen to tell you what to do, believe it or not. Federal regulations require that you must be able to open the front hood manually. All electrified powertrain vehicles have an MSD (master disconnect). This is what all fire departments know about when they respond to a vehicle fire. Once you disconnect the traction battery, and then restore power to it, the car will automatically step you through a calibration process that has nothing to do with the problem you were experiencing. There is no excuse for this problem that you have experienced. The engineers at General Motors should hang their heads in shame. But at the same time, it is an absolute miracle that the thing even works at all. The complexity in this thing astounds the imagination. Likely, the real problem is that as a society, we are moving too quickly into electrified power train.
We are not transitioning to software control as you said in the video. Most cars have hundreds of control units running millions lines of code already and it works well. The problem is that software engineering is driving the process instead of systems engineering. Software engineering focus on availability, portability, testability and so on. Systems engineering ask first what can go wrong. It's a mindset change.
First it was Tommy's problem with one of the button's during the off road test, now it refuses to move?? I hope GM looks at this seriously, this is NOT a good look!

That's just because volts are like that. Buy a bolt euv or something, it's way better
I hate EV cars but I also owned a 2014 volt, for carpool access. The cars been to the dealer once and I honestly have nothing but good things to say
@@suburbanTrick I am in the same camp as you. I had my Volt to the dealer once, the day after I bought it for a crack in the rear glass. Had it for 3 years and put 40,000 miles on it. Never had an issue with it beyond the first day, which was damage during delivery.
that ain‘t a car, this is a cell phone on wheels.
This isn’t just EV’s it’s all vehicles. You are essentially driving a computer down the road. And we all know how often a computer or phone locks up on you. This is only going to happen more often! A long time ago they used to R&D cars for at least a year before they were released to the public. Now they just release them and pray for the best! I’m a Tech at a CDJR dealer and our Pacificas PHEVs will do this. But Mopar gives you a N release so you can pull it into a flatbed. The fix is a reset of various modules. Now there is a flash for the PCM and AHCP to fix that problem. But we all know there is going to be some other issue.
Thank you for showing us another example of why you should NEVER buy the first model. ESPECIALLY a whole new concept and technology for $115k! Love your videos!!
I mean someone will have to be the guinea pig for the first models. The new V6 Toyota Tundra had engines issues however unlike GM, Toyota fixes and refines their vehicles meanwhile GM we get these clunkers
What you should learn here is NEVER BUY AN EV!
Dont buy any ev untill atleast another 5 years until they work out the troubles if they can, at this point as said in another video these are really just over priced toys if you have 115, 000 or 140, 000 just to throw away and im sure most of the population doesn't.
More like never buy a gm
Never buy ANYTHING made by a union.
Q: what’s the most reliable thing on the hummer? A: the hazard lights.
Hahahahaha! I noticed it was the only thing working.
Ooh burn but so true
@@TheDieselndust The parking brake as well. It was doing its job just fine. Not the fault of the brake that the computer never told it to release. :)
Ok that's a good one! 🤣🤣
Savage.
$115k? 250 miles later it breaks down?! They'd be taking it back, i promise you
22:29 E-mail from GM "An issue with the Engine and Transmission System in your..." This vehicle has neither an engine or transmission. 🗿
That is an upstanding gentleman. He runs a company with true dignity
driver still should've tipped him cash for wasting his time tho
@@polaris911 Maybe he did.
This is happening to a lot of expensive vehicles. You guys should do a whole segment on this. Listen to ppl dealing with lemons and have them come on your channel, random shut downs, etc.. Call out these companies, hold them accountable.
I think they are aware that there are issues in other vehicles, but the point they are trying to make is how this issue left the owner stranded in a dangerous situation. But more importantly, the vehicle lacked intuitive controls or mechanisms that would allow the user to reset the system.
That’s a great idea!
My new GMC AT4 was dead in my driveway the first day with 180 miles on it. It was stuck in what I call “accessories mode”. Fan was on at full speed could not turn fan down or off, could not start engine and could not shut the It off or get it in neutral. Dealer said it was a bad battery, well yeah the batter died after it sat stuck in my driveway all day with the accessories on. The dealer put a new battery in the car assured me that fixed the problem, a few days later check engine light is back on. 3 weeks later check engine light has been on every day, dealer said I hit a bird and took out a shutter on the front grille and he was so proud to show me the missing shutter, The service advisory was confident that was the problem and would order the shutter assembly. He was a little embarrassed when I asked if he ordered enough to fix all the new AT4’s on the lot, he looked at me confused when I said all his trucks on the lot must have also hit a bird as they were also “missing” the same shutter vane. I then explained that the truck never had the Vane and it was designed that way. I should have stuck with the ugly Tundra, but one more service appointment and I qualify for lemon law.
@@jpic6098 OMFG 🤦♂
Makes you wonder if companies are using substandard components due to all the shortages.
Man, I wanted one of these so bad, but after this, I'm not so sure. Might just get my Ram Rebel
If I were to venture a guess, I imagine the song and dance with the windows was to recalibrate their positions for the computer. Considering that I’ve never seen any other car request this, it gives the impression that the software was made by a team who doesn’t traditionally do motor vehicle software
Like a Rock! A $120k rock
My 1991 F-150 is still running fine!! I believe that I will keep driving it.
That warm GM feeling.
Was probably a loose 12v battery connector. He slippe it off with his bare hands so easily. Once rebooted, computer ran fine. until that battery cable causes a change in voltage readings again
So, in a few weeks the dealer will call to let you know you can pick up your truck. When you get there, they will tell you they could not recreate the condition.
One thing to take away from this experience is “do not reboot your car in traffic if it’s still drivable”. Drive to somewhere safe first, since you might be there a while. (Not just for EV owners… gas cars are basically computers on wheels now as well)
Both of my vehicles are over 20 years old, for a reason.
No, the take away is dont buy electric cars
Good advice.
@@dgafbrapman688 Nah, dodge charger did the same shit. Problem was a sensor in the motor. Good luck fixing it in traffic.
@@dontrustwhiteyevery1 Let me distill my response then, dont buy cars that are entirely reliant on computers to work. Every aspect of a car is operated by computer these days, thats why i dont buy anything newer than like 2005 - 2006
You got that great GM Feeling!
On the brightside, it looks terrific!
Watching this video makes me love my '99 Suburban even more.
Gas is freedom
Right?!? Looking at my 97 2500 with the 454 in it... I'll never get rid of it
@@deejayyy1681 Same boat with my GMC Sierra.
You need to remove the front right tire and turn the vehicle onto it's side to reset it. Makes for easy rebooting.
😂. Okay
Well the lug nuts are electronically locking so… 😂
Haha that was the case with the PS1
Just pop some new AA batteries in the bottom and it’ll start right up
We're not 'transitioning' to batteries, it is not possible to run the entire world on battery cars, there isn't enough resources or power to do that, and there never will be. This is some kind of weird blip that will collapse very soon.
9000 pounds WOW! This will really ruin the roads, and 2k for tires every 2-3 years is a huge expense. Not to mention getting in an accident or even worse, having one of those vehicles hit someone or another small car!
It's wonderful that we are now expected to become IT specialists to troubleshoot our car's problems or else it will completely physically lock us out of driving
Better not post anything on social media that certain people deem inappropriate which could damage your social credit score. You’ll get punished by having your EV locked out. This is all going down the most dangerous and anti-liberty rabbit hole.
Most people couldn't fix an ICE vehicle if it suddenly died either. All things considered, this was actually a pretty easy fix.
@@mechmat12345 nope, but they could at least put it in neutral and get it off the road Not to mention this wasnt even a break, it was just the computer having a fit and locking the entire vehicle
@@mechmat12345 But it doesn't take long to learn, especially on the older ICE cars and trucks. They're cheaper and easier to repair. I like the idea of a Hummer EV, but not at its current state of development.
@@mechmat12345 an easy fix? What are you talking about a easy fix you make no sense in what you just said you have a 9000lb truck stuck in the middle of the road and you can't operate anything nor put it in neutral with a ICE you can def get it on a tow truck if you blew a motor or have a electrical issues where is the complexity in that vs you cnt put a 9000lb brand new vehicle on a tow truck?
I have no desire to own an EV, any EV. I’ll keep driving my older truck. I love that thing… gets me where I need to go and it’s paid for!!!
You needed a can opener to get to the battery. Should have one in your emergency kit next time.
I think these EVs should have a hard disconnect emergency switch installed for the 12V battery located in the glove box for somewhere accessible. Rickie N
It’s people like Leroy that make America great! He didn’t get mad, was patient, and acted professionally the whole time. Way to go Leroy.
Dont be that simpl, Because he was on video all the time.
@@samchan2434 naa he seems like a nice guy not everyone thinks like you .
GM was paying him through on start tho
Supposedly he didn't charge them. If so, they should have at least tipped the fella
I'm sorry but what does that have to do with making America great again?? I would think that would be dealing with our government, not the citizens attitudes.
Crazy, I drove right by you on my way home. The police officer was already there and it was definitely rush hour! I'm glad it ended safely!
Too bad he wasted enough money to buy a house on a worthless electric piece of crap LOL
'Stay safe' Yuck
Windows up and down are common on most vehicles that have “auto” windows fyi And most electronic controlled doors (doors, hood, trunk, fuel door) will have manual release. Good to read the manuals before you drive a crazy technical vehicle that’s brand new
Bummer EV is a crazy idea , well done !
