  • From this match you can see how Stan has improved among the years to become a 3 time GS Champion: I mean, the backhand was always the same rocket,but the forehand.... in 2009 was in a Benoit Paire level! Impressive the improvement done with this shot: between 2014 and 2017, Wawrinka was an elite player: he's not been n1 only because the 2010 decade was full of monsters

For example if switch Zverev's 28 lbs string tension Head and Mannarino's 11lbs Babolat, we will see unforced errors parade... It's maybe Wawrinka new racquet that helped him to throw less ball and helped him be more confident, ofc is not just racquet or string but... Also new diet helped Djokovic to have more confidence in his body.

    • That's only if the opponent gives a loopy ball to his backhand. Don't get me wrong, his backhand has always been solid, but it's never been a weapon.

      @hello-mv6yg@hello-mv6yg2 жыл бұрын
    • @@hello-mv6yg Oh it definitely has been a weapon. From 2008-2010 his backhand was amazing, 2005-07 it was pretty deadly as well, 2013 it was very good and even in the modern day since 2017 he’s been quite aggressive with the backhand. AO 2009 was an insane backhand tournament for him. He can attack with it from compromised positions, defend on it better than anyone outside Djokovic and Murray, hits awesome passing shots off it, and can attack a short ball with it too.

      @SJ-di5zu@SJ-di5zu2 жыл бұрын
    • @@SJ-di5zu Any top pro can attack a short ball on the backhand side. When I mean not a weapon, I mean it's not a super special shot for him. Compared to his forehand, his backhand looks very average.

      @hello-mv6yg@hello-mv6yg2 жыл бұрын
    • @@hello-mv6yg I disagree. He turns defense into offense really well off that wing with accurate passing shots on the run, or loopy backhands down the line that bounce high on the righty backhand, and he attacks off neutral balls really well. Especially when he gets that cross court angle. Earlier in his career he was a bit more reluctant to attack off that wing, but he’d go for broke if pushed out wide with angles or attack any ball that’s short but he can’t run around for a forehand. I think when he’s playing well, his backhand is definitely a weapon, though not on the caliber of his forehand. Sometimes he loses his backhand for a bit and generally that leads to bad results for him, with the exception of 2011 where he managed to keep making finals and deep runs because of his speed and forehand compensating for his backhand and serve being weak that year. Those are just my observations from watching a lot of footage though. Either way, no denying the 2008-2010 Nadal backhand was beastly.

  • Wawrinka was not working seriously for many reasons until years later. And then he was good form 3,4 years and then 1,2 serious injuries. Unfortunately for some reason, possibly because once coming back he would face new injury every time (maybe due to incomplete work in rehabilitation or conditioning which requires very hard and serious long repetitive work ) he did not come back to form although played a few very good games in some tournaments to show he still could get back but it would require very much work which at that stage not everyone considers a good deal to make.
