@Siddharth Kumar Only cos DJ was mentally and physically not there in the US Open Final and he would have walked this tourn if hed been allowed to play. he will now take no chances and be scampering to get his jab if the rules stay as they are as he wants the most slams and will get them and I like them all equally, mainly Murray but DJ has played the best tennis by far ever by a male player.

And he beat freaking PEAK ROGER FEDERER at all those finals. Rafa was GOD in 2008-09 from FO, Wimbledon, Olympics and AO. The level of talent to beat peak Fed is extraordinary.
The match was one of the greatest of all time, but the ceremony was just legendary.

@@norm-bb3bb Your point is well taken. I saw that discussion with Becker, Mc Enroe, Lendl ( and also Mats Wilander ). However, as I said before the Big Three are a once in a lifetime happening and although they might not admit it I believe that they are competing among themselves to see who will end up with the most majors and they are not about to let the next generation into their club. Give credit at least to Medvedev who has at least beaten Djokovic in one of the four major finals he has reached. So he has opened the door just a little. Personally, as a tennis fan I am enjoying the older generation keeping the younger ones at bay…… but we all know that it can’t last forever.
@@norm-bb3bb that's like saying who's the next Michael Jordan. Or the next Ali or Tyson. If it comes, it comes, but it's probably safe to say we've seen the best in tennis in terms of skill plus record, especially with the big 3 all being in the same era.
2017 was an amazing year for both of them. They both came back from injury and completed the fairy tale comeback winning 2 slams each, AO and Wimbledon for Fed and FO and USO for Rafa

I’m a Federer man through and through-his grace (physical and otherwise), his simply gorgeous one-handed backhand that I’ve been trying to emulate my whole tennis-playing life-but my god Rafael Nadal is astonishing. Those forehands he hits, which initially look as if they’re headed for the rafters, that then simply drop into place right on the line, it’s just incredible spin-and yet somehow, he seemingly loses very little in velocity even before the ball bounces. I cannot imagine being on the other side of the court from a guy who can hit such heavy balls like that; I doubt I’d ever even make contact, and if I did, I wouldn’t have much to show for it. (As a relevant aside, the Pure Aero is really an extraordinary racquet. I tend to ignore marketing language about how this or that racquet will generate enormous spin/power/etc., but I demoed one and was so astonished at the effect-it really does allow me to generate very noticeably more spin than any other racquet I’ve used-that I bought one. Unfortunately, it has yet to turn me into Rafael Nadal, but perhaps this will come in time-lol. OTOH, I demoed the Federer Pro Staff and found it borderline unusable: I can’t play such a heavy racquet because of arm issues, but even beyond that, I’m just not good enough or strong enough to play good tennis with those intensely control-oriented racquets.) Anyway, long digressions here, but my main point is this: Federer is *my* all-time great, but Nadal deserves everything he’s got, and it is just a delight to watch him do it. I hope some new greats of their caliber will come along-perhaps with new/different playing styles-and maybe at least one of them will have a lovely one-handed backhand for me to enjoy watching. I don’t know how you guys who hit two-handers do it. Cheers all, and congrats to Nadal for his recent triumph.
Nadal had played equally long and fiercely competitive semifinal against Verdasco and still had the energy to pull off in the final. Kudos to RAFA
Man that has to go down as *THE BEST SEMI-FINAL OF ALL TIME!!!* I thought Verdasco finally broke through was gonna be a force but he fizzled out after that. That really was legendary so much so that its in my top 3 matches behind Wimbledon '08 & AO 2012
i am glad nadal and djokovic existed, without them, federer would have won over 30 slams, over 500 weeks at world number 1, over 150 career titles, over 10 year ending world number 1, over 50 master 1000, over 10 wtf, he would've made mockery of the sport which would be very bad for tennis, competition is very important, nadal and djokovic saved tennis.

I mean, look at this video we’re commenting on. The level of tennis on display in this match is NOT NORMAL. The big-3 and big-4 brought tennis to a new level. If you love tennis, you gotta admire the greats. Their level of mastery over the sport looks like freaking art: full flight Federer gliding over the court firing forehands at will, Rafa coiling his inside-out cross court forehand on red clay, Djokovic sliding on hard courts, on a full stretch, turning impossible defense into impossible offense? All 3 of them play tennis on setting 100. All of their matches are on another level regardless of winner. I mean, just look at Wimbledon 2019. Fed beats Rafa at 39, playing insane tennis. Then Fed plays lights out tennis on the final firing off 90+ winners over 5 sets, serves to perfection, wins most rallies, returns better than Novak freaking Djokovic, AND still loses to the chess and zen master that is Novak Djokovic. They’re gods of the sport. All 3 of them. It’s time we learn to appreciate them all while we still have Rafa and Novak playing otherworldly tennis.
This match along with the AO’12 final & the USO’13 final is the highest level of hard court tennis I’ve seen in my life so far. Special mention to the 3rd set of the USO’11 final.

This must be the highest quality match they ever played in a Grand Slam. Absolutely stupendous. Nadal's great play and unbelievable defence eventually wore down Federer. It was so so close to a Federer victory.

I think wimbledon 07 and 08 finals were the greatest matches between them, but that one was close too. Nadal had already proved by then (2009) that he was albe to defeat Federer everywhere, while Roger has never won against him in RG... Then again Federer's comeback in 2017-2019, playing at the same level as Rafa and Novak, proves that he is rightfully considered among the greatest of all time.
@@arismaiden6457 Federer is the greatest player to ever lift a racket. In 2011 at age 30, he was keeping up with a 24 year old Rafa and a 23 year old Novak. Age 30 in tennis terms is OLD. It is the end of someone's career. That Federer beat Rafa, then took Novak to the edge at Wimbledon 2019 at the age of 39 is just more evidence of his status as the greatest. At this point, he is 2nd is stats. Novak has finally surpassed him by all metrics, and deserves the title. But neither he, nor Rafa, are better tennis players than Federer himself. They're much better athletes. If Novak and Rafa had to play a 23-24 year old Federer while they were 30-31, it would be game over. Federer at the age of 23 had the greatest movement and forehand the sport has ever seen... He annihilated the competition and made a mockery of players like Sampras, Agassi, Hewitt, Roddick, etc. They call it a weak era because Federer at his peak made them look weak.

Wimbledon 08 is a sentimental favorite for me, because of the drama and the buildup of the two previous Wimbledon finals, but in terms of raw tennis quality, nothing comes close to this

We are blessed with these two legends.
I think time and time again these great matches have demonstrated how much tennis demands from players mentally. A single point can reverse all the momentum built up from the beginning. A mere 7-point tie break can decide if all the hours of hard work is worthwhile or not. A serve, a return, or a volley can separate the difference between victory and defeat. And of course, the player has to do everything physically or mentally. I salut to those who are brave enough to face the tremendous hardships and achieve something incredible.
Players also need to adapt to the conditions and balls used. You can't practice that. Even if the court is the same, the weather and humidity may be different.
Yes we fans expect the tennis players to fight hard, but it’s so unfair sometimes to lose a match for few sec lapses in attention/ choice of short. To see the agony on their faces, felt very sad and bad for both. Can’t imagine the stress of playing when one is about to lose match. Nadal with his arm around Roger in end is such a sweet moment after a hard fought match.
Rafa. The most brutal competitor during the match and the most gracious sportsman after it. How someone could be both is beyond me.
The quality of points were incredible. Fed was technically at his best here, but as I always say Wimbledon 2008 was the reason of this result.
Rafa's physical and mental madness in this tournament is the reason why he won this match

There's always a reason. Nadal had Fed's number back in the days. He was able to counter everything that Rogi produces. Almost like what Novak is to Nadal lately on hard courts and what Rogi has been to Nadal in 2017 after AO. It's not about being better, but about having a proper plan which works and makes the opponent worse.

Defo one of the greatest Australian open matches of all time just after AO 2012. Federer and Nadal played exceptionally well but Federer couldn't believe that it was 2 sets all after 4 sets despite himself playing some insane tennis. He couldn't fathom how Nadal had so much in the tank after his semi final against verdasco. Which is why he broke down into tears afterwards. After losing at Wimbledon along with clay he thought Nadal would be surpassing him on every surface.

Coming right off the 2022 AO final, it’s interesting to compare the two versions of Nadal, at 13 years apart. I’d say Nadal is a better ball striker today and tactically smarter but he was a lot quicker on his feet in 2009, which of course is unsurprising

This was a great match. But Federer folded that night. He looked beaten before it started. Im a Federer fan before people start the hate. Wim and the French massacre both 2008, messed up his head. The 3rd set missing the break points and then the double fault. It was the beginning of the mental torture, in his agonising defeats. Djokovic 2010.11,19. If not for injury Nadal could have 25 slams. So proud he got to 21 on Sunday. Back in 2009 i thought Nadal going past him would cause me pain. Its funny as you age things change. Could not think of anyone more deserving. When they go tennis will have lost so much. Novak as well, who pound for pound is the best on his day. Federer the most talented and best to watch. Yet Nadal has this humble natural grace you find difficult to describe in a man that physically competitive. I find the GOAT debate tedious. As it wont be settled by numbers. It stops people realising there really is not that long left, for us to bask in the greatest era in tennis history. Peace and Love.

even WITH those doubts my god Federer (and Nadal) was insane back in the day. He was firing winners on basically very shot from every spot on the court. And than obviously kudos to Nadal that despite that overwhelming firepower to have the defensive and mental prowess to absorb the torrent of bombs coming at him shot after shot. But echoing your thoughts - this really was a great era in tennis. If you look at the top players matches again today, still incredible level, but not the god-like matches we had between the Big 3 in their hey day.

This is the most truthful and beautiful comment i ever read describing Nadal his place and the BIG 3. Much respect. I watched all these matches LIVE, nkt just here on youtube. And honestly, after Nadal beat Fed here i thought it was the passing of the guard that Fed would just evaporate. Like u said, Nadal demolished Fed in 3 straight slams 08-09 FO, WIMBY & AO 09. @crazywarlord777 Federer for me will always be the greatest. I can't put into words. However Federer first major was in 2003. Nadals 2005. So they shared much of each others generation. Different generations is a huge stretch. They met in every French open for 4 straight years. 05-08 Three straight Wimbledon finals. 06-08. Federes prime was 07. Dojkovic your point makes a little more sense. In Federer being displaced and age playing a bigger role. Because even though Novak is only slightly younger than Nadal he peaked later. In 2007 year Fed played Novak in Aus, Nadal french, Nadal Wimbledon, Djokovic US open. So they were always pushing. He won't win the slam count because he got tight on big moments. He also has a poor 5 set record against either man. 2007 Wimbledon. 2017 Aus are his only 5 set victories over Nadal in a grand slam. He's never managed it against Novak. He should have won US 2010, 2011 SEMIS. The single biggest moment was him not converting in Wim 2019.

His first grand slam title after becoming #1, and he break Roger 20 titles record by winning his 21st majors in the same tournament. I always thought he had nightmares in the Australian open as he lost many finals, but this tournament also won many magical moments for rafa as a worthy champion.
His 1st Grand Slam after becoming #1 was the 2008 US Open not this tournament.
@25:28 genuine respect and love from Rafa towards Roger. It’s amazing what he did at such a young age. Same as Roger. I wished Rafa played little strategically when older than to be in the beast mode all the time, causing so many injuries and but still managed to get 20 slams.👏👏 another point to admire: his team is same over last so many years.

Federer did not outplay Nadal here though. Nadal played fantastic to save the break points even if Federer wasn't 100% clinical.

Fed had a gazillion break points, but just couldn't convert whatsoever. That is the story of their rivalry. Sucks for Fed that he played with a tiny racket for most of his peak against Rafa. Rafa had a bazooka for a forehand, and he used it to decimate feds one handed backhand over and over again... I'm afraid we can watch tennis for the next 30 years and we'll never see tennis played like this again.

This is definitely one of the greatest matches ever. Prime Fed vs prime Nadal was a treat to watch in spite of the many heartbreakers Fed fans had to face. If you had watched the match, you'd see that Federer played the better tennis in the first 4 sets, but lost only because Nadal was in his head. Uncle Toni was on record to saying that Federer was the better player in the first 4 sets and that he does not know how his nephew won. This is a match I bet Fed wished he could do over. 2017 Fed would not have lost a match like this. Credit, however, goes to Nadal for being the more mentally stable player when it mattered most.
So it’s more or less the opposite to the 2007 Wimbledon final.
2017 Fed only won because he faced a weaker Nadal. 2017 Fed wouldnt have beaten 2009 Nadal if even Roger in his prime couldnt.
Federer really managed to throw away a couple of GS just because he let the opponent get under his skin. This match should've been one in 4 sets. 2019 Wimbledon comes to mind. 2009 US open, 2015 US open + the 2 famous Semi's with double match points. But that's life

Nadal was so energetic, he could still keep running during the final after he had played almost 5 hours in semi-final against Verdasco. And Nadal defeated Federer again in grand slam final after Wimbledon open in 2008, this made Roger and his fans heart broken. I still remember Federer cried and said "God it's gonna kill me".

The Rafa-Verdasco AO 2009 semifinal was more than 5 hours - around 5:15! Unbelievable that Rafa pulled out that victory and less than 48 hours later took out a much better rested Federer playing at the top of his game.

2008 French Open and Wimbledon loss to Nadal, and again Aus Open loss to him was killing Roger from Inside! but there afterwards he completed 3 GS finals, and achieved the unachievable French Open the same year ae wind a marathon win over Roddick in the Wimbledon final which surpassed him over Sampras. He contested all 4 GS finals in 2009, quite a feat!

Credit to nadal but till to this day , it hurts. The french open 2008 final left a mental scar on roger which was clear with wimbledon and aus open final losses. But credit for roger for winning last 5 meetings and overcoming mental demons against nadal!

This match and post ceremony is the greatest tennis and class I’ve every had the privilege of watching. Not sure if we’ll ever see the quality points and tennis we saw in this match as well as the 08 Wimbledon.

This is the best tennis i've ever seen from Rafa on the hard court's. The best performance from grass is from 2008 wimbledon. and the best performance on clay is 2008 French open were he absolutely destroyed roger federer.
I'd say his 2013 US swing was where I think he played his best hard court tennis.. won in Indian Well, Montreal, Cincinnati, and US Open where he destroyed Djokovic (who's the best hard court player)
@@den_525 I'd say some of his US Open play in 2010, 2011, 2013 and the 2017 Semi-Final were some his best moments in terms of quality of play on Hard Court's. He really did look a cut above the rest.. Obviously, not in the 2011 Final. Even though he lost that, he played extraordinarily well.

Because of the drama, the level of shotmaking, and the level of competitiveness throughout, unlike in the 2017 final where one guy would have his physical dips, while the other would raise his level.It's in the fifth set of that 2017 final where both guys play at a really competitive at the same time.Not the case with the 2009 final.That final remains a classic, and adding to the fact Nadal came out triumphant after having played a five-hour,14 minute epic against Verdasco, and it's certainly an amazing achievement.
