The last Grand Slam Final between Federer and Nadal.
Tennis fans witnessed epic matches during the golden age of the Roger Federer-Rafael Nadal rivalry, but they saw a different kind of classic in the 2017 Australian Open final. This time it was the Swiss pulling out a five-set championship against the Spaniard for the first time in nearly a decade.

And I am a defender of Nole with my group of tennis friends lol, but this is diferent, before the domain of Djokovic there was the Fedal rivalry and watching this after so many years of not seeing them fighting for finals and as you can see they were under 20 rank, Roger and Rafa came from injury that they after said they never expected to be again in a Grand Slam finals or be in the top again... so this final has a lot of conext out there that makes more special than other final, without demerit just for the time they were playing or the intensity in every point like the 2012 AO final @@krish5608... But Rafa wasn’t running them down like he usually does, coming back from injury and all. This was the match that left me truly disappointed about the state of tennis today. I mean I could understand the argument in the previous years when these three were winning everything in sight, the argument that they were so ridiculously better than everyone else. But I’m sorry, the rest of you in the to 50, if you can’t beat THIS version of Federer and Nadal, it’s a pathetic indictment of you. This entire Australian Open was the worst I have seen Nadal, especially, play in the last five years

May not be as effective as Djoko's backhand when it comes to consistency, but it was exactly what he needed to beat the guy who always exploited his weakness of looping topspin shot to the backhand side. • @@armadyl1212 that day in 2009, Federer didn't have a good day at the serve, and overall his gameplan vs Rafa was not the best in my opinion. There was already some good evidence that hitting huge drives vs Rafa's forehand was more effective than bombing his backhand (and far more natural for a right handed player, we can add), but just Ljubicic managed to convince Roger to fully embrace this gameplan and completely commit to it. The result were amazing, from this final onwards his backhand always remained a constant danger for Rafa every time they played again... in this match, apart from direct winners, thanks to those insane drives Roger took the lead of rallies or unbalanced Rafa literally countless times. He's always been able to hit extremely fast backhands, even when his shot was not as insane like it's here... he should've tried this gameplan way before in my opinion, instead of allowing Rafa to stay into so many long grueling crosscourt rallies.

  • One of the all time best tennis matches I've ever seen. They were hitting shots as a matter of course that 90% of ranked players couldn't get back. Obviously, they are both gifted, but I think Federer edges out Nadal because he's got a bit more killer instinct. For example, when the heat is up Federer starts playing at the net a lot more, and he usually wins those points (Nadal does go to the net as often). Also, his backhand is far deadlier than Nadal's. Lastly, his ball placement is just more surgical and deadly. Kyrgios was comparing "the big three" and he said Federer was the best because he'd run you off of the court and make you feel stupid. That's what I'm getting at.

    • @@bowiththeflow7123 I agree. I dont understand why people put this AO ranked so highly. The only thing I like watching about this match was seeing the noticeable changes Fed made to his game to bring against Nadal.

  • 28:44 Chum jetze!!! Title nr. 18. That was one of the most beautiful finals for me as a hardcore RF fan. The newly flattened and more consistent bh won him the title. Rafa probably thought he could play the same pattern as always (heavy topspin fh cross on Roger's bh). What also strikes me the most how RF was at all times no more than 1m away from the baseline. Amazing footwork and timing. That's the GOAT stuff. I remember losing my voice in the 5th ;)

  • I was 3rd row at this match (and the whole tourney lol) equidistant between Roger’s players box and the front row of legends. It was the greatest sporting contest I have ever witnessed in person and I screamed myself hoarse. For the record, Kerber/Serena the year before was almost as good, holy fuck the crowd was into that match just as much. The crowd was terrible for Kerber/Halep and Halep/Woz the following year even though those were great matches too.

  • We can talk about who's the GOAT, titles are clear and Djokovic is the first, Nadal the second and Roger the third. But just this man in some days of his prime can play like this. Magic without grunt and almost without sweat. When his foot are wellplaced, he can send the ball where he want and how he want. He can get sometimes a wrong choice, but never a wrong execution. So sad that he didn't have the athletic skills of his opponents
