  • The ridiculous thing is that Rafa was absolutely amazing in this match as well. He did everything right. Used the same tricks he used to beat Federer so many times in the past. But that backhand had some serious venom that night.

    • The ridiculous thing is that only the Big3 is capable of beating Nadal in "good condition" in Australia. I say good condition, because Medved and Shapovalov had their chances to beat Nadal in AO 2022 and they didn't take it.

      @claudioburgosgonzalez2844@claudioburgosgonzalez2844 Жыл бұрын
    • Absolutely. H2H Rafa usually always had the upper hand against Fed except on the very fastest surface (grass), because he could better exploit the forehand to backhand exchanges; Fed could seldom generate enough pace and/or unpredictability to worry Nadal on the backhand side, while Nadal's backhand could be deceivingly flat and effective. This was a night Nadal would normally have won; the difference was Fed's improved, versatile, powerful, Wawrinka-like backhand. If Fed had made this backhand adjustment early in his career, there wouldn't be a big-3, just a big-1.

      @Nkosinati@Nkosinati Жыл бұрын
    • @@Nkosinati HOnestly though, the surface in AO 2017 was a bit faster than the last few years and whenever you give Fed a fast surface, he is tough to beat. Yes he was also playing exceptionally well in that period but the court was fast which really helps his game. On fast courts, a Prime Federer will almost always beat Nadal and Djoker.

But also tears of joy for all the memories that have been accompanying my whole life. I want to thank Roger for all the nummerless times that he has left me stunned,while watching him thrush his opposition,for making want to pick up tennis,copying his moves and dreaming that I was just like him when I won my first tournament all those years ago.I want to thank him for cheering me up everytime he played,no matter what I was feeling at the time.But most importantly I want to thank him for making me believe that art can be created out of nothing and that evereyone can take part in the moments of art and magic that he created.For all of that,Roger,thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The MAIN difference is Fed HAS lost on a GOOD BACKHAND DAY.....but Never to Rafa,,,,,it was AAAAALWAYS the reason Fed lost to Rafa. Two HOURS of even the SIMPLEST ROUTINE BACKHANDS.......all having to be hit from OVER ones shoulder......would DEFEAT anyone..........it's a simple club tactic....but it's the ONLY reason Rafa ever beat Fed. I looove Rafa....but if he were a righty....he'd never even beat Fed on Red Clay. Not to mention the 99 MPH serve would cause SEEERIOUS problems for Rafa if he were serving righty...........just ask Andre.

I’ve never seen him play with such guts. Not many guys have won a slam at 35, let alone against one of the greatest ever players. Pretty special I’d say. It’s gonna take a few more years to recover from Wimbledon 2019. He’s injured again now in 2021. Hope to see him play again though.

    • i couldn't agree more.he seriously needs a sports psychologist.because when he is at his absolute best,i don't think anyone in the world can stop him.even djokovic(who has been at the receiving end of some ass whoopings by fed early on in his career) has admitted that if fed plays at his best,he wouldn't be able to stop him.that's because perfect attack always gets the better of perfect defense in tennis imo.and in the modern age,nobody embodies attacking tennis more than roger.but his weak mindset has been his kryptonite for most of his career.even the brilliant backhand we see here is because of a pressure -free mindset. but after ao 2018 he seems to back to his old nervous self. as a die-hard fan i just hope we get to see him in this kind of form a couple of more times in a few more future slams.but his present form makes chances of that happening low.:(

    • Dr. Mr. Person Guy what are you even talking about saying young and old?this was not 2006 or 2007,this was last year.and to be honest,physically he says he feels much better than he did last year.this is 100% a mental problem.and he's had this pretty much all his career...struggles early on in his career against nadal and later Vs Novak were all because of his mental fragility.on the occasions when he was able to overcome those fragilities,he was truly an unstoppable player.thats why I think he needs a sports psychologist to guide him to 2 or 3 more slams before he finally rides off into that sunset.

    • Joshu Koshy And he was already old last year? Last year after his terrific start he lost in the first round of Stuttgart, in the first round of Dubai, then he won Wimbledon. You can't expect him to be consistent at this age, especially with the bad weather luck he had, he doesn't need any "psychologist", that's ridiculous. He's been very calm and collected. "this is 100% a mental problem" Stop acting like you know him, he's perfectly fine mentally.

Possibly. That would be my guess because it's definitely not desire or focus. @Magician3388@Magician33883 жыл бұрын
    • Federer had very poor tactics against Nadal in the earlier years, it wasn't just a matter of Rafa's forehand killing the one handed back hand. For example Nadal would serve 80% of the time to Roger's backhand and Roger still did not commit enough space to it. Every time he approached the net he got smoked. Roger has bageled Rafa on clay before so it's not like Rafa is unbeatable without the right strategy

      @JL-fh4qw@JL-fh4qw2 жыл бұрын
    • @@JL-fh4qwit's not about strategy, it's about the matchup, it didn't favor Federer in those slow courts and his playing style is to attack and finish the point as quickly as possible, Nadal was a beast defender and he moved very well and his topspin didn't allow Federer to play his game especially with that smaller racquet that he had. the only mistake Federer did I think is that he should've changed his racquet way earlier and maybe take some breaks to come back fresh.

Funny to see Alcaraz making a joke about him not wanting to do a Fed 40-15 meme to the King of Spain lol that never gets old and has crossed the generations. There won't be any excuses about the 16 year age gap between Djokovic and Alcaraz, just two gladiators duking it out. Djokovic is still out there at the top of tennis, Fed is long retired finishing up going down more than 2 to 1 in finals 13 to 6 to Djokovic, almost 2 to 1, 11 to 6 in slams. At the end of the day, Fed's shanky beakdown backhand was only more loved by Djokovic in Federer than Fed's mental weak mode in the big moments. Some players have a bit of an off day the odd time- for Fed it was more often than not against Djokovic in the big matches!

I’ve always thought Federer’s tennis suffered because of some bad defeats to Nadal and I didn’t truly believe it was because Nadal was necessarily a better player. The rivalry evolved in Nadal’s favour and I think this negatively impacting Roger’s psyche and confidence and he didn’t have a good enough coach to help him overcome the mental obstacle and find the solution. This wonderful victory not only exorcised those ghosts of painful losses but set up an incredible winning streak against Nadal where Nadal was crushed 6 times consecutively.
