  • Going on a bit of a rant… I have a 6th grade daughter that loves volleyball. I don’t know volleyball fundamentals so I’ve been following Coach Donny for about two years, teaching my daughter these fundamentals and she has exponentially gotten better every year. But there girls at our high school varsity level that teach her bad habits and tell her to not do some of these techniques in the mini-clinics they put on. My daughter has actually gotten in trouble for critiquing them for their spiking technique. I tell her to ignore them because that’s why they don’t compete at a high level and don’t make it very far in tourney play. Thank tou Coach Donny

    • Good on her, sometimes it’s better to go with your own technique compared with the conventional method. Everyone’s body’s are different so there are always different types of approaches to how one plays. Like the good old saying, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

  • Hey coach Donny, Can you go into further detail about wrist flexion and how to hit with topspin? I've always been complimented on my hitting form but have never been able to consistently hit with topspin. The majority of my spikes are like knuckleballs coming down. I've been practicing getting topspin with roll shots and placing the ball, however once I start jumping and trying to hit the ball harder I seem to lose the ability to get top spin. I constantly try to remind myself to keep a loose wrist, hit on top of the ball and snap down yet still nothing. Do you have any tips, tricks, or practice exercises to help with this? I also tend to find that its easier to get topspin (on the rare occasion I do) when I'm doing sharp angle shots where I'm snapping my wrist more at an angle and hitting the ball not straight on (although while I do get more topspin a lot of the time there is side spin or I guess the ball spinning at an angle where it then curves). Thanks a ton Coach, also keep up the great work love all the videos and the vibes you give. All the effort you put in shows, especially when EVERYBODY who plays volleyball knows of THE COACH DONNY!

She's struggling with getting her left arm down near her stomach or her side (almost as if she doesn't have enough time to put it up, then get it down before hitting the ball). She also bends to the left in the air too much. Very similar to what you said about cheating during the wall drill explanation. Please help. Oh, and you should know, you're a hero in our house Coach Donny.

  • Love the videos. Question: why would bringing the hitting arm back along the path right of the head be better than looping it over the forehead? Seems like looping over the forehead provides more momentum and is a lot more fluid than going straight into a spiker pose in the air. It also seems like hitters spend more time than necessary with their hitting arm back while in the air waiting to get to the ball when bringing it straight back. I've only seen one video on YT showing the looping upswing, but it has helped me get up higher on my hitting.

Basically my lower body acts like a lefty and my upper body acts like a righty. When i am spiking, because my penultimate step is my right foot my body rotates to left side, which makes difficult for me to hit with my right hand. I tried to change my stepping so my pentultimate step would change, it makes me feel super weird and i feel like i cant jump as high as i normally can because of muscle memory. What do you suggest? Should i change my stepping and relearn it or should i keep doing what i am already good at and just train as the way i am?

Also i like to think that the more you think about it the “worse” it can get :) once you get the motions down you’ll get it! also making sure ur body is stable in the air and ur now all over the place. If you’re finding that your body is out of control it may be that you need to strengthen your core to hold your body in the right position or you might be too eager to hit the ball and may be coming in to hot then your body can handle atm. Hope this help

  • Just by trying it i almost broke my arm against my monitor never would have though that right technique can give someone as skinny as me so much swing power.

  • Thanks very much for all the detail you put into this video. Along these lines, have you researched the hand positioning just before the snap? I have been trying to cock my wrist back, but that seems to slow the snap. I just noticed some of the KZhead videos about the "volleyball hacker" (for instance, kzhead.info/sun/npezfLZvq2WKh6M/bejne.html). If you slow the KZhead playback of his arm swing to 0.25, you'll see that he curls his wrist just before the final snap. My first attempts at this seem to make my wrist react faster. Would really appreciate your thoughts and comments.
