  • I have the cheapest version of the Anker one and I use it all the time. Bonus, you can plug into the pack with lightning to USB-C and charge even faster if that’s something you want to do. The apple one does not offer that at all and I use it on other random devices that I have around the house. Including my Apple Watch waited charger if needed when on the go. Wish it would wireless charge, but it’s better than nothing.

  • The Apple MagSafe battery pack works better as a battery extender. Charge your phone and battery pack to 100% and go on about your day. The battery pack will drain during the day, but in the evening, you will have around 90% battery left in your iPhone. 🎉

    @SamsungS-st1ew@SamsungS-st1ew Жыл бұрын
    • This is how I used mine when I first got it in late 2021 and it worked beautifully on my 12 mini. I just left it on all the time, plugged a lightning cable up to the battery pack to charge both batteries overnight, and it kept my phone charged to 90% until 6-7PM most days before the battery pack was depleted. But for the last year my battery pack automatically charges my phone to 100% after I unplug it from the charger, which means my phone stays hotter, power is being wasted so my total battery life is reduced, and I’m putting more wear and tear on my internal battery keeping it at 100% all day. The only way to fix it is to remove the battery and reattach it to my phone. Have you noticed this with yours? I feel like it has to be a software bug where the phone just forgets to limit charging to 90% when you unplug it from a charger. Unfortunately nobody seems to notice because most people probably just throw it on for a quick charge in a pinch. Very frustrating.

      @DanielGoff527@DanielGoff527 Жыл бұрын
    • Hi Daniel, I just got mine recently and I only notice that the battery pack will charge the phone to 100% if I have it connected to a charger via the lightning connector. I didn’t even know that before this, you could let it stay at up to 90%, while plugged in. That would be the expected behavior for me too. Now, I’d like to understand what do you mean by “removing and reattaching the battery”?

      @leegengxiang2173@leegengxiang2173 Жыл бұрын
    • @@leegengxiang2173 Thanks for your reply. So if I leave the battery pack on my phone and plug a lightning cable up to either the phone or the battery pack (I usually plug up to the battery pack overnight and I’ll plug up to the phone in my car to use CarPlay), both batteries will charge to 100%, as it’s designed to do. But when I unplug the lightning cable, the battery pack keeps charging my phone to 100% until I take it off my phone and put it back on, even though I don’t have the “charge past 90% setting enabled. If I charge my battery pack separately and then unplug both and put the battery pack on my phone, it works properly and only charges to 90%.

      @DanielGoff527@DanielGoff527 Жыл бұрын
    • @@DanielGoff527 may I know at what state of the battery % is your phone when you unplug? Perhaps it’s already past 90%, say 100% and by then your MagSafe battery pack can’t actually charge to 90 by then..?

      @leegengxiang2173@leegengxiang2173 Жыл бұрын
    • @@leegengxiang2173 Right, so the way it’s designed to work (and the way it used to work when it first hit the market in late 2021), is you would unplug the charger with both batteries charged to 100%, and it would let the phone use the first 10% of its internal battery and then it would hold the charge at 90% and siphon power off the battery pack until it was depleted. Sometimes if you were doing heavy tasks it wouldn’t be able to keep up and the internal battery would dip below 90% temporarily and then the battery pack would charge it back up to 90%. This was an intelligent design because it takes a lot less power to keep a battery charged at 90% than it does to keep it at 100%, so it maximized the efficiency and the available battery life of the battery pack. It also reduced the wear and tear on the internal battery by not keeping it charged to 100% unnecessarily, thus preserving your iPhone’s battery health. So I liked just leaving the battery pack on all the time, having maximum possible battery live whenever I found myself away from a charger for a long time, and I liked preserving the health of my internal battery. But for the last year, it holds the charge at 100% after unplugging from a charger until I take the battery pack off my phone and put it back on. While it’s charging to 100%, the phone stays hotter, it wastes a lot of energy which shortens the life of the battery pack, and it’s putting more wear and tear on my internal battery. I feel like this has to be a software bug, it’s like they pushed out an update and just forgot a line of code that tells the phone to limit charging to 90% after you unplug from a charger. But nobody notices because nobody understands how the battery pack was designed to be used - they just assume you throw it on for a quick charge when your phone is dying, which is incredibly inefficient. And it’s frustrating because it used to work perfectly until about a year ago.

  • When I first bought my Apple MagSafe battery pack, I was seriously going to return it within the first week, but then I realized that it's not a battery pack to charge your phone and more like a battery extender. Basically what it does if you pop it on the back of your iPhone, and let your iPhone uncharge to about 88 to 90% it kind of activates the charging mechanism and keeps it at a respectable 90 to 91% supposedly to not stress out the battery and degraded quicker. I have honestly used my iPhone for a whole day and the battery extender has kept me at 91% until 12 or 1 o'clock in the morning of course what are use it more for is to protect the back of my iPhone from setting it on tables and what not my iPhone is completely naked and I take it off and on all the time. Of course, I wouldn't recommend people buying it for the steep price but if you could get it discounted, go for it, you would not be disappointed

    • It depends on the use case I guess, but $100 is too much for a battery pack/extender that if i was stranded couldn’t charge 100% charge my phone and other battery packs can 100% charge my phone.

  • One extremely important advantage of the Apple pack is its thermal management for the iPhone and battery pack - which no other 3rd party pack (to my knowledge) has. If the Apple pack detects the iPhone temperature is too high, it can reduce or even stop charging, until the phone or battery pack temperatures have reduced to a safe level. We all know heat can damage batteries. Think of it more as a battery top up device, rather than a charging pack.

Would you please give me your educated suggestion on what's best for a SE iPhone second-generation.I was also looking at one of those AquaVault chargecards but they look like they're just supposed to get you by. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

    • Thanks! For your wife, the SE does not have MagSafe, so these kinds of battery packs won’t work wirelessly. And since her iPhone still has lightning, I would suggest something like this: amzn.to/40SZA2D will need to be charged with USB-C, FYI

    • I get a little wary of really hot battery charging, it's why I tend to use Apple's MagSafe battery the most. But in a pinch and when traveling, I like having multiple. You can always use the Anker or Mophie ones as a wired charger as well and then you don't have to worry about heat. Just need a USB-C to lightning cable.

  • You forgot to mention the most improtant aspect of magsafe battery pack - the heating. The best thing about apple magsafe pack, is that it has temperature monitoring which pause charging when the battery heats up. Other brands just heat up like a cooking stove. This is incredibly important bevause lithium ion batteries are permanently damaged by heat.

    • Heat is definitely an enemy to battery health. If you’’re using the battery pack *every day*, you may want to switch to Apple’s. While it charges slower, that’s what limits the heat experiencing when charging. If you only charge via MagSafe battery periodically, it’s ok to experience that heat if it’s not too often.

      @beardfm@beardfm Жыл бұрын
  • The Anker 622 is practically a hand warmer. The heat it produces is bad for your phone battery. I just wish they have like an off button / trickle charging mode as a way to mitigate this.
