People forget that the MagSafe battery pack is the only device that the iPhone can reverse wireless charge. So you could still charge it via your iPhone 15 even if you only had a usb-c cable

Keep in mind that the iPhone does reverse wireless charging to the magsafe battery pack when plugged in. That would be a method of charging the battery pack w/o bringing lightning cables, just charge it through the phone 😆

Love them both. Battery pack is so small and handy. Always take mine with me when using the phone as a hotspot which always drains the phone battery. Plus also handy to charge my AirPods too.
for the Duo charger, you can just get a couple USB-C to lightning micro adapters. It's what I'm doing for the couple of pieces I still have that only support lightning. That way I can change out all the cables to USB-C, and just change a couple ends to lighting as needed...
I absolutely adore the magsafe duo and despite its price, it’s one of the few first party accessories that I find that’s truly worth the price as it’s hard to find reliable alternatives with the same quality and versatility. Might pick another one up for the cheap in case my first one dies.

I travel frequently for work and I love the duo! Hoping they bring it back with the fast charge for the Apple Watch
There are dongles available in the Apple store to connect to the USBC cords with a lightning end. Problem solved.
We own 3 of them in my house. Fantastic charger. Two of them get used for travel. Way overpriced but still worth it imo.
I’d reccemend anker, they have every type of charging cable block or battery pack that You’d ever want.
I use Anker 321 5000mah battery pack, it has temperature sensors that help managing heat during charging.
I hope they do refresh both to the new standard. What I liked about the Apple MagSafe battery back was how cool it stayed compared to a battery pack from Anker.

You can buy 3rd party one compatible and even if says 15watt that's for Android, Apple limits iPhone to 7.5watt Max via Qi to keep devices cool and extend battery life
The MagSafe Duo is perfect for me for travel. I only really charge my phone and watch overnight so having a slim charger was super convenient.

I have two of the MagSafe battery packs and absolutely love them. Something tells me we’ll be seeing an updated version with USB-C soon!
They seem to give me so little extra juice. But it’s cause I stream video for 2 hours via GameChanger. But it sucks like 80% of my pro max and all of the battery pack in 2 hours.

Great video, thanks for addressing this topic! I love both products, hope that they eventually have usbc versions or something better is created to replace them. I only use my duo to charge my watch and AirPods overnight so I could care less about phone fitment or qi 1 charge speeds. Will be keeping both for now. The duo needing a lightning cable is a little inconvenient but not the end of the world, you could probably find a lighting to usbc adapter somewhere. As many others here have said, the magsafe battery pack not having usbc is a non-issue, it can be reverse charged via your phone.

I believe the Apple MagSafe battery pack will be back. The smarts in how it reacts with the iPhone are second to none. For me only charging the phone to 91% and holding was the best feature.
I'm hoping we see it return with USB-C, maybe at the October event!
For me the best part is it doesn't have a power button, seems any other battery pack needs press a button to power on.
MagSafe battery pro with a power button ? MagSafe was made for the iPhone 12 mini and they killed that line up so there’s really no point of bringing it back unless if they plan to bring the mini series back… However I am a fan of MagSafe battery pack bought two for my iPhone 13 mini, switch them out on the go while staying at 90% battery.
I can see the MagSafe Duo getting a newer redesign. USB-C with faster charging. Also the later Pro phones camera have been getting a bit too big for it. Maybe even making the MagSafe part adjustable like the Watch charger so you could use Stand By.

They didn't offer a separate USB-C case this time around because the case is tied to Find My now. The OG Airpods case was just a vehicle to store and charge them. Now the 2 airpods and case are all 3 together in Find My. Unregistering one of the devices unregisters all 3 devices.
Can it power magnetic coolers too??

MagSafe battery pack also did a 90% charge limit. But now the 15’s have that option for any charging, so if third parties can incorporate the smart charging to minimize heat, then those will be good options

I have both and love this but my duo is what I use just for travelling since the iPhone 14 pro honestly doesn’t sit perfectly on it but oh well they still are nice and I am curious about the devices we may see developed
Love both, and both have been (and still are) quite useful while travelling... What we should DEMAND Apple at this point is sort of a roadmap to know when it will kill the lightning "ports" from everything (say the Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, etc...) I am not quite sure if there's actually anything other than these 2 devices besides the magsafe duo and battery with lightning... but at this point they should replace them with USB-C versions. The MagSafe battery...took me quite a bit to find one (Apple stores were always out of stock)... At least I can get rid of all these goddamn cables that have just become obsolete. Edit: I completely forgot about the AirPods Max... grrrr...
I managed to get a mag safe duo right from the apple store when they were still available. It's my perfect travel companion.
The clutch newest one doesn’t get hot only downside is you have to plug it in the phone but it’s thin and lightweight.
The MagSafe Duo is still my go-to travel Watch and AirPods charger and I always carry it in my work bag.
It's so light and compact, will miss it!

And with phone completely dead, battery will recharge to 100% In about 45min. The magnet is strong and attaches really well. And it wsnt $100. I bought it on a special day in July for $35.00. And tht ws about 2yrs ago. It still goin strong. And its charged off usb-c.😉

The Mophie 3-in-1 is awesome. Way preferred over the Duo IMHO.
MagSafe Duo is phenomenal, absolutely love it for traveling. I have the Anker cube you show but it’s not necessarily the most travel friendly. Also the AirPods Pro were actually updated for use with the Vision Pro, which is why you can’t just buy a new case.
How does a charging case affect the Vision Pro?
I just went to buy an Apple battery pack the other day. Had no idea it was discontinued. Ended up getting the Anker and it works good.
My MagSafe battery pack does get a little hot sometimes when I’m charging my phone and also I don’t use it while it’s charging
From personal experience the MagSafe battery not only DID get hot when I was simultaneously using my phone but it also barely charged it. It was near impossible during summer for my phone to get charged. Of course when I wasn’t using my phone it charged fine, but then again you were better off buying a 15 buck power bank and charge your phone with a lighting cable bcuz it was much faster and actually charged your phone even if you were using it. The idea of MagSafe is really good being able to use your phone without a cable dangling from your pocket to it but the actual product wasn’t even worth 100 bucks like I honestly felt like I was scammed from buying an overpriced and less effective powerbank.
I was looking to see if the updated the duo charger to usb c thinking maybe I’d pick one up I have the lightning one and love it and when I didn’t see it I was like omggg I love this thing it’s the best charger I’ve ever had it’s easy to travel with I keep it on my bed at night and it lays flat so I don’t have to worry about rolling on it and knocking it off it’s literally my favorite I’m so sad the discontinued it
I love my MagSafe portable battery. It’s incredibly light and thin and one of the most portable and reliable ones I’ve had yet. When Apple rolled out with usb-c only I felt instantly saddened. I’ll be keeping mine till it doesn’t work anymore. Apple would have been smart to keep these in production. I love how it works so well and without being tethered

I def see the battery pack returning w usb-C before the end of 2023. Apple has sold an external battery pack/case for most of its models since the iPhone 6 I find it hard to believe they won’t continue to cash in.

I only appreciate magsafe duo when i travel. When fold it is ridiculously compact in my luggage and extra one lightning cable will just able to charge my phone and watch and airpods. Hope new usbc and faster charging is available
Excellent video but to be honest the battery pack never worked great for me, but I do love the Duo and still use! For the first time in years I’m skipping the upgrade for IPhone 15 and waiting until next year and keep Using the IPhone 14 Pro Max 1TB & Ultra Watch which still is amazing!
Probably wise! Next year is supposedly the big update for Apple Watch Series X so will be a good time to upgrade then.
Verizon was selling both of these for 25% off after Apple removed them both. I was able to snag a battery pack and it’s been amazing for my 13 mini. Definitely feels like people that hated on it weren’t using it correctly because for me it’s been absolutely perfect and doesn’t get hot at all

I am not getting the option in low power mode in notification centre to toggle Charge past 90 to on/off. By default its charging more than 90 on my iphone 12!
You can recharge the phone using the battery connected to the lightning, and you can recharge the battery using the phone connected to the USB-C. It's a win-win situation - that means you can recharge with either USB-C or lightning. I say get the battery with lightning port even if you own the iPhone 15.
Interesting that Qi 2 isn’t certified yet… hopefully soon then some sweet new accessories come out soon!!
The Smart Battery pack just got me through a full three weeks in Japan charging it up every night - never ran out of battery or felt any battery stress even doing long 12+ hours of navigation, camera use, music listening, and much much more. I hope they killed it off to follow it up with something better, but I'll be holding onto mine for a while.
I‘m using the battery pack every day.. can‘t understand why people don‘t like it.. they even use it wrong, they think it‘s a powerbank while it‘s a battery EXTENDER.. hope they bring it back with USB-C
Firstly, thank you. I never knew this. I actually really wanted a MagSafe battery pack and was holding out for the September event thinking they’d get upgraded to USB-C. When they didn’t I was annoyed and just went to my Apple Store on the Friday and just purchased one. Never knew they were being made extinct. I did notice I purchased the last one and it wasn’t on the shelf tho… So basically in the space of a week I’ve purchased two dead products. 13 Mini and MagSafe pack 😂🤷🏽♂️

Great content man! I wanted to ask an unrelated question. Would you upgrade from a 13PM to a 15PM? My 13PM has just been replaced by AppleCare because of an incident, so it’s basically new (100% battery life). I mainly use the phone for video calls, gps, and a few pictures and HD videos (I don’t record in 4K because it takes so much space in the cloud).

I preordered the iPhone 15 Pro Max upgrading from an iPhone 13 Pro. The only reason I didn’t get an iPhone 14 is because I was still making monthly installment payments on my Apple Card.
Im looking at the specs, and I just don’t see the point in spending $600 now exchanging it for a new one. The dynamic island is cool, but it’s not a dealbreaker. The always on display I would have off at all times, and the upgrades on the camera would be nice, but the 13PM takes great photos already. I think I’m going to save the money and see what they release next year, or perhaps in two.

The extra hour of battery, better antenna (mine was craping out and I was either replacing for fixed antenna or trading in to get 15pm), lighter weight, and really the USB-C sold me. Mine is different because I didn’t spend the $150 to replace yet, but the ability to no longer have to ask “do you have an iPhone or android” to use people’s chargers will be nice! Now it will be “can I use your charger?” 🎉🎉🎉
I wish that Apple would sunset accessories like these instead of just making them suddenly vanish from the store. Give people who were on the fence about something that kick of “final warning: if you were interested then make up your mind and get it now or forever hold your peace”.

You need to put circular magnetic chargers on your lighting and micro devices.
Didn't even know that the magsafe battery pack was discontinued; was waiting to pick one up on Black Friday from Best Buy or Amazon for my 12 mini but when I checked I found none on Amazon Canada and only one remaining at my local Best Buy! I picked it up from them just in time, so thanks for the heads up! Local Apple Store has none btw, as expected for a discontinued item.

@@beardfm I ended up returning it! It lost charge ridiculously fast while not being used, so it couldn't be counted on to have enough charge when needed. Plus, the led light that only flashes amber or green depending on whether it's charging or finished charging, but doesn't stay on in either case, means you're always wondering about the battery pack's state of charge (unless you're staring at the battery the whole time it's being charged, you could easily miss the green light flash that indicates it's fully charged!). The only way to truly tell is to periodically attach it to the phone while it's being charged and use the battery widget, which is a hassle. One of the more stupidly design electronic gadgets I've tried in a long while; no wonder it was discontinued by Apple!
Couple Notes: 1) "Qi 1" can support 15W, it's called the Qi-EPP (Extended Power Profile). It could actually support up to 30W (though as far as I know nothing actually utilized that high of a wattage), Apple just chose to support Qi up to 7.5W and limit 15W behind their MFI / MagSafe system. Sony and Motorola phones, for example, support 15W via Qi-EPP. Google and Asus support 12W. 2) The reason the Apple Magsafe battery doesn't get so hot is it charges your phone at a slower speed (as a wireless charging powerbank should). Wireless charging generates heat, as does drawing power from batteries can converting voltages, so a powerbank should charge slower than a standalone wireless charger. But none of the third party manufacturers can control themselves and basically all support the max 7.5W an iPhone can accept over Qi. Hell, many of them actually support higher than that for some reason, meaning if you use one of these Magnetic Qi powerbanks with an Android phone they can get scary hot as they output even more power. I tested some with my Pixel phone which supports 12W and the power banks which didn't turn themselves off after a few minutes felt like they were going to melt.
Love my anker cube. But I will always have my MagSafe pack as a backup. Stupid they didn’t update it.

You could buy a wireless charging case for airpods pro that had a wired on because the airpods themselves were the same only the case changed. the reason why you cant buy the usb c airpods pro case separately is because the airpods that come with that case are different as they are able to support lossless audio when using the upcoming VR headset. So since the airpods arent the same between cases, you cant swap it on its own.
I have the MagSafe Duo and love it. I do think we will eventually quietly get an updated USB-C (or Thunderbolt) one.
The mag safe duo is my favorite charger ever. Really sad to see it go and to know that when mine breaks (which I’ve had for 3 years) I won’t be able to replace it.
As much as I would like things like the magic mouse and keyboard to be USB-C, I suspect it will be a while before Apple makes that switch because they will want to get as much money out of the lightning cables as possible before having to retire them

I’m predicting the MagSafe battery pack and MagSafe duo will launch at a spring event early next year. If I had to guess Apple didn’t want to flood a ton of new product updates all at once but did want to get rid of lightning iPhone accessories. Perhaps at a spring event we could see a 2nd gen AirTag with the updates ultrawide for better precision as it did feel sort of weird they bragged about the updated ultrawide but the AirTags ,which is the main product you find ultrawide functionality in, is still running on the old chip from the iPhone 11. Seems like they’d want to show off a much bigger range like they did with the find my iPhone ultrawide where it showed 70+ ft instead of the AirTags 30ft max.
I’m hoping so. Or even just a quiet Re entry into the store with USB-C…

When I upgraded from the iPhone XS to the 13 Pro Max I bought 4 MagSafe Battery Packs and dedicated charging docks with a plan to rotate through them on a regular basis. I previously always had to use Battery Cases but the 13 Pro Max battery life has been so good I’ve only needed the Battery Pack on a very rare occasion that I’m at an outdoor event and unable to charge normally for an extended period of time.
Yeah I'm going 15 Pro Max this year with the hopes of experiencing that awesome battery life...

1 always on the phone, 1 on a charging dock in the bedroom, 1 on a charging dock at work, 1 on a charging dock at my work condo. Swapping them regularly. That was the plan at least, hardly ever used them😅

I’m doing this now. 15 Pro w Magsafe battery. It’s heavy lol but I wasn’t ready for the usb change and don’t have enough cables. Works very well and actually might keep it like this for the versatility
They also need to update the apple pencil 1 to usb-c. the dongle between the pencil and ipad 10th gen is so ridiculous!
I bought mine in December 2021 along with an iPhone 13 Mini. But decided to return em. Since NZ doesn’t have any Apple Stores, I have to do my returns over the internet/have them send a courier to pick up my items etc. And you know how planes are with batteries, so they wouldn’t let me return it. They said they would refund me though, and let me keep the Battery Pack. So yeah, that’s how I got a Magsafe Battery Pack for free, lol. And I ended up buying the Green iPhone 13 Mini when that came out.
My guess is they will release a new Duo with USB-C and FAST Apple Watch charging which isn't possible on the current model. Another cool feature if you have the newer AirPods MagSafe charging case, you can use the Apple Watch charger portion to charge your AirPods while the phone charges on the other side. Usually I'll carry a Duo and a usb-C fast Apple Watch charger to travel as backup for quick charging before going to bed and wearing the watch. I have the new Anker cube but it's almost 1lb by itself and too heavy for minimalist backpack carry, I'll probably keep it for home use or when I bring a larger roller suitcase instead of a backpack.

512GB that's what I have on my 14 Pro and haven't used half of it.
For all the flak that Magsafe battery pack got, I think everybody forgets that this is the only battery pack that doesn’t stop charging the phone due to heat. I’ve tried other magsafe battery packs and it stops charging frequently due to the phone being hot.
And they all get much hotter than Apple’s
Erm… it always stops charging when hot. Additionally it discharges while using the phone
MagSafe is still limited to authorized MagSafe chargers for 15w, with Qi2 in the iPhone you’re still limited to 7.5w
Apple battery pack did a lot more that just charging 1. shows up in the battery widget 2. In control center low power mode button, you had an extra option to charge past 90% 3. communication and firmware updates through MagSafe - no one does that 4. Did not get hot and stops charging when at 90% 5. Reverse charging on iPhone. Only device that does that through MagSafe Buy one while you can. I find it great on flights with a pop socket on back so I still have enough battery to Uber home when I land.

The MagSafe Duo I have doesn’t even work because the camera bump on the 15 Pro is so big that it rests on the corner of the Duo and prevents the phone from forming a flat connection. Hopefully they come out with an updated version which actually fits the current phones and sports a USB-C connection - I loved the product when I could use it
That’s a shame. Still works with the Pro Max but it definitely needs to be updated. Watch ultra doesn’t fit great either

I don't know because even though the cameras seems to be the same size, the 15 pro is smaller than the 14 pro, so the gap has too be smaller as well. Also some accessories are already touching the camera module with the 6,1 14 pro, so it'sa very important point I'd say ^^ @@beardfm

i own a magsafe battery pack and im happy with it charges up to 40% of my pro max which is 4 hours of use and it doesn't drop battery when not in use, i didn't use it for 2 months almost and it was still 100% battery so it is 100% worth iti, i was considering magsafe duo for my apple watch and airpods , but im not sure if i will commit to it i have magsafe charger for iphone that i never use, but considering it is going away im even more interested in buying one, idc if it charges slowly it brings me 2 benefits, showing me time and putting my watch somewhere, and charging my airpods also with one wire, plus soon i will buy airpods pro 2 so i will own 2 pairs, so thanks for making this video, in 2 months at earlyest i will buy it, this and next month i have renovations.
I really want them to bring back the smart battery case. I’ve currently got it on my iPhone XS and I get around 24 hours of charge. The MagSafe battery just doesn’t seem like a seamless product compared to the battery case. It’s the only thing holding me back from upgrading

@@beardfm it’s great, it’s one package, and doesn’t slide off. Not to mention it’s faster at charging and you can charge both of the devices at once with fast charging. The MagSafe battery pack is slow and for you to get the same performance as the battery case I’d assume you’d have to charge both individually rather than just charging the case, as the bottleneck is the wireless charging.
I love the battery pack, and I’ll keep on using it
I haven’t tried apples charger, but every other MagSafe battery pack I bought went out within 6 months. I think I’ll wait until Apple releases a usb-c model.
I already have 2 apple magsafe battery pack but I still haven’t used it and I actually keep my magsafe battery pack in the box to keep them clean and new 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Apple MagSafe Duo is available on Amazon! I got mine not long ago from there.

They've updated them, but no Qi2 batteries or chargers just yet.
Also the only MagSafe charger that only charged at 5w. All the third party battery packs are at least 7.5w
I didn’t even realize that the pack was discontinued wow. I got one just a few weeks ago on eBay opened box for under $50. Any more I would never have bought it though. It’s nice. Slim. Replaced my anger one that I gave to my granddaughter
I charged my iPhone 12 Pro Max exclusively overnight on the Apple magsafe charger and it killed 2 batteries in 15 months. Both batteries dropped to 80% battery health in a little over 7 months each.
Im guessing whatever doesnt have usb c right now theyre saving for an event later this year since the air pod pro 2 cases were updated in the store right away with usb c after the event
I think AirPods 3 and AirPods Max are coming, but I think MagSafe Duo has gone the way of AirPower...
Said this elsewhere, but now might be a great time to snag the MagSafe Duo at a heavily discounted price, especially if you're sticking with a lightning iPhone (I finally snagged one earlier for $99, which is a pretty big discount from the regular Canadian price of $169!). With an updated/USB-C version, you would lose the option of unplugging the Duo and plugging the lighting iPhone or AirPods in directly for a quicker charge when you're crunched for time, which is especially useful when travelling.

You don’t have to toss all your Apple Lightning cables prematurely - I’ve been using very small Lightning-to-USB-C adapters for a couple of years. The only time they haven’t worked for me is when a case or accessory is mechanically designed such that the adapter can’t completely plug in correctly. Of course we can envision the near future when adapters are USB-C to USB-C, which is more elegant and universal. But for most people, this will inevitably happen - no need to spend more on cables earlier!
