i remember my dad doing this back in 2012 and back then there was no 3d printers or software to assist the integration so it took him months to hand make all the parts, jail break and write his own code to get this working. its really cool to see how streamlined the process has become in just over a decade since then.

Not gonna lie, but my great grandfather actually did this already in 1916. It was during the great war, and he used a film projector that was attached to a balloon, which was hovering above the car, kept in place by wires and leather straps. I kid you not!
@@Snayps Wow mate, thanks for sharing. How does one get started in this? any tips?

The Form Factor of the iPad is very flexible ergonomic and portable. Apple GPS Maps for route-finding works very well due to the large screen plus the ability to use the iPad for other functions also eg music, web etc. The custom-made holder for the car is very useful for clear viewing of the iPad as dashboard, that's a clever idea to custom make one.
Thank you! And it wasnt so hard if you have someone with 3D Printer. 🤙🏼

@@MinerManDouglastrue but no voice navigation
@@MinerManDouglas Without a Cellular model the iPad will not be able to locate its position due to the fact that the A-GPS chip is part of the cellular chip hardware. Otherwise at best it will only acquire its location from a connected cellular device such as your phone if configured to be a hotspot, but even then it will have a significant delay as it only updates every so often.

@@Snayps Does this map navigation works only with cellular ipad pros ?
@@noblethomas143 It works on any tablet that as an internet connection. You don't need an iPad pro with cellular internet, you can use for example an iPad or Ipad Mini, that are cheaper, and will be perfect for this task, and for, you can simply do a hotspot from your phone. The Apple Maps or Google Maps apps can download maps offline, and you can also download your music on apps like Spotify or Apple Music to listen offline, so for short trips you don't need to bother connecting the hotspot. No need to pay extra to have cellular internet. Just make sure your cellphone has a mobile plan with plenty amount of Hotspot to share.

Back in 2007 I worked as a development engineer in human machine interface for an auto company. We purchased an SUV to fit with products consistent with our future vision. In early meetings I presented my vision where the smartphone carried all personalization and entertainment, and physical buttons and controls related to these functions would be assigned by that device. The group sat dumbfounded. I had just foretold the end of in car infotainment growth, and it made complete sense. The company rejected my direction because it limited growth "share". They instead struggled to produce lame functions that were always obsolete from day one. Your iPad solution in this video is the best approximation I have seen to my concept, but it still lacks access to fixed controls in the vehicle.
Wow, that is a compliment. Thank you friend! ✨🥹

Loved the idea and adored your animations. The styling was superb. I think most automakers should just add an iPad as their CarPlay/Android Auto integration, the iPad layout just works, and it's still kind of embarrassing that they pour so much into R/D and the infotainment system is just, every single time, an afterthought. Thank you!

I’ve been doing this for years. I utilize the cd player slot in my car and use a modified metal deck plate for the base along with some magnets attached to the rear of my iPad. It keeps the iPad low and does not obstruct my driving view. This works great on the 10.9 iPad, good with my 12.9 iPad but I think the iPad mini would be the GOAT.

The creative, solution driven build, the slick editing, the informative no nonsense voice over. I love everything about this video! One suggestion I’d make, U=shaped usb c adapter. I have a similar solution sat on my desk, I 3D printed a 2mm thin layer the same height and width as the iPad case, it has a channel which fits the usb-c cable snuggly and that’s connected to a usb-c u-snapped adapter. Means I can place my iPad on the magnetic case and then just push the charger into it, really convenient and no visible cables.
Thank you for this wondeful feedback!! I am actually playing with idea to use smart connector instead for charging. 🤞🏼☺️

@@Ludwigzz_ thanks so much . Can I just keep it in the car without needing to start it up each time I drive ?
@@HaydarAlThwaini yes just leave it connected to the usb cable
I could most definitely see this coming into the production market of vehicles . Being able to just put an iPad into any modern car’s dashboard is really convenient and easy solution instead of developing a screen that supports AirPlay which can be slow and instead use a more easily usable and faster device just like nothing. The only thing I’d want more out of this idea is the ability to charge magnetically when attached in the car and it automatically syncing to the car when placed on the magnetic holder.
It will never go in to a production vehicle because automakers don't like giving up control of the data they could collect from you using their own built in screens.
@@nickt6581 That will leave it up to us to tear out their infotainment screens and use our iPads, though Apple collects data too.

Great video, this was a cool solution and integration!

A very well made video about a topic that I love. I had a similar setup a few years ago, just was more simple. I used a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 inch that mounted onto a Tablet holder that fit into the cars CD slot. It connected to power and aux directly and I had it mounted vertically. Then I always had a split screen with maps on top and music on the bottom. I love that setup, but had to abandon it, as we switched to a car, which was too small to reasonably mount the tablet somewhere. I’ve been eying the iPad mini for a new attempt, but not having horizontal split screen, would be a downgrade compared to my old solution, but I would have access to the iOS app ecosystem, so it might be worth it.
Thank you so very much, glad you like it and thank you also for sharing your own experience, appreciate it. ✨
I love this idea- my only issue is that it removes back up cam functionality, not 100% necessary, but it’s a nice feature. I’ll keep my magnetic iPad mounts installed for longer drives, much appreciated, also planning on using your focus feature template

Very nice modification. Did you have any issues with the iPad coming off the magnetic mount when driving on rough roads or hitting bumps?
I need an answer to this.
He has answered all of the questions except you maybe iPad actually comes off or hitting buttons isn’t a great idea
I've actually done this on a couple of cars with great success each time. Unfortunately when I started doing this with the newer Mini-LED ipad pros I realized a major flaw with them is that they do NOT work with polarized sunglasses. I live in SoCal so polarized sunglasses are a must. Another thing with any ipad is you will also run into brightness issues in bright-light (like the sun beaming on you), it's not terrible just not ideal compared to a screen that comes with a car. Also - and this is obvious but just to note - this is illegal to do, if a cop pulls you over and sees you have this setup they will obviously ticket you for that, so just make sure you take it off before that lol. With all that said, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you do this if you don't already have a good apple carplay screen, it's extremely worth it, especially if you drive long distances. EXTRA NOTE: If you plan on doing this, WAIT FOR THE IPAD PROS WITH OLED DISPLAYS. Not only will the OLED display versions be super bright (just look at the new iPhone 15 Pro Max) but you will NOT have polarization issues. There won't be viewing angle issues either and it will look the same no matter the angle.
Why is having your iPhone 15 Pro max (approx 7 inch) legal but having an iPad mini (approx 8 inch) illegal? 🤔
Yeah but this could be illegal in your country, but here in Czech Republic, it's not... The only thing could be an issue. If the device blocks the driver's view...
Why would the Mini-LED iPad not working with polarized sunglasses be a flaw of the iPad? That's ridiculous. And you are telling me the 12 inch Display In many cars is legal, but the iPad is not?
It's not illegal
@@enterprisecreations1492 it's not, like, a moral fault of the iPad or whatever. But many LCD screens don't work with polarised lenses, or only at certain angles from them. It's definitely something people should bear in mind if they want to copy this!
That deserves a subscribe 👌
✨Thank you! Next video soon.
