American Automotive company Lucid Motors unveiled the first prototype of the Lucid Air in 2016. Claimed to be the most efficient luxury car in the world, the elegant and futuristic Lucid is an intriguing entrant to the hotly contested electric vehicle market currently dominated by Tesla and Elon Musk.
A proprietary patent powerhouse, Lucid's technology is on the leading edge of performance for electrified vehicles. Despite the ethereal name, Lucid has moved a lot of money, atoms, and current in the real world.
The business has received over 1 billion dollars of funding.
Lucid is building a 380,000 unit per year production facility in Casa Grande, Arizona.
And the car is powered by a 113 kwh battery pack with a 900 volt architecture.
The electric motor, inverter, transmission, and differential are all housed in one miniaturized electric drive unit that weighs just 163lb (74kg) and packs over 650hp.
10 Years ago CEO of Lucid Motors Peter Rawlinson was the chief engineer on the Tesla model S and VP of engineering at Tesla.
Efficiency is the holy grail for electric vehicles, and the North Star for Lucid Motors. Lucid is primarily focused on achieving more range for the same size battery. The Lucid Air's 113 kwh battery pack contains industry standard lithium ion cells, but Lucid has integrated advanced cooling systems, and a proprietary cell architecture which reduces internal pack impedance.
Lucid is not new to the battery game, Originally founded under the Name Atieva in 2007, the company designed, manufactured, and supplied batteries and powertrains for other EV's before they launched the Air including the Formula E electric vehicle racing series.
Lucid's electric drive unit is one of the automakers most significant innovations. The small electric motor unit achieves over 670 horsepower.
Lucid has built a prototype tri-motor with high performance already we've achieved a 9.24 second run in the standing quarter mile.
Lucid approached cooling by running computer models of the electromagnetic fields inside their motor and identifying zones that could be optimized.
The Lucid air uses permanent magnet synchronous motors that can spin at up to 20,000 RPM on both the front and rear of the vehicle. There's a concept related to permanent magnet motors know as cogging torque and Lucid's motor design reduces cogging torque for a more efficient EV.
Lucid's proprietary inverter utilizes a silicon carbide MOSFET chip to further maximize efficiency in real world driving conditions. The Lucid Air could be the first car proven to beat Tesla's powertrain efficiency, but Lucid doesn't see Tesla as a direct competitor with their cars the Model 3, Model X, Model S, and model Y, and even the Tesla Cybertruck. The Lucid Air is a luxury car.
Lucid's VP of design Derek Jenkins says that the future of luxury is streamlined, minimalist, and will follow true form to function principles. The vehicles smaller frontal area, and highly efficient vortex front air intakes create a streamlined aerodynamic signature, with a drag coefficient of just .21.
Lucid is focused on achieving more distance for less battery. Regarding the price of the Lucid Air, This will make future vehicles more affordable, because the battery is the most expensive part of car.
One thing that's really important about our interior is our displays. This screen is a 34 inch lcd screen and its primary function is to to focus information towards the driver and you'll notice it's fully contoured in this direction and this direction.
The Laguna Seca raceway in California has emerged as the ultimate proving ground to test the performance of electric vehicles. The 2021 Lucid Air boasts up to 1,080 horsepower available in a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive configuration, and a quarter mile time as quick as 9.9 seconds. In July 2017, a modified performance version of the Air hit a confirmed top speed of 235 MPH 378 km/h on the high-speed track at the Transportation Research Center in Ohio. In 2020 unofficial track reports started coming in that a Tri-Motor Lucid air had bested Tesla's track record by over 2 seconds, with a lap time of 1 minute and 33 seconds.
The Lucid Air will be available in 4 initial models. For Lucid Air Price: The Air Pure, Air Touring, Air Grand Touring, and the limited Air Dream Edition, available in spring 2021. I bet a lot of people are wondering about Lucid Motors stock.
Whether Lucid is truly a worthy challenger to Tesla will come down to how well they deliver their final production car to market.

Awesome. I believe in Lucid, my "dream car" is now a Lucid Air. I will try my best to support this company.
They need to make a crossover vehicle. People like to sit up higher. A car can still be stylish and sporty if you don't make it too tall. There is a lot to like about this car but I have gotten so used to all the extra space and ease of entry/exit of so-called SUVS I don't see myself buying a lucid. Tesla really does need to take notice of the Lucid's interior. It reminds me of the Cadillac Escalade.
@@guidedmeditation2396 Good point - I really wonder how long that trend will last for. I think that, with Covid still on, people want to feel "safer" so, they go for the bigger vehicle(s). I honestly think it'll change within 2 years. It's a Brave New World - my friend :) I think people will opt for "minimalism" and " environmentally-conscious" vehicles in the years to come. I like your channel name - I will check it out.
Has anyone independently tested lucid claims? Personally, I don’t think they will succeed because they are focused on hardware, not software. Engineers are awful at managing companies.

@@SatisfyingWhirlpools Are you sure they weren't Rawlinson's idea?. He was the Chief of Advanced Engineering at Lotus when Tesla teamed with Lotus to develop the original Roadster. That is why Musk, who had nothing but a prototype sedan shell on his hands in 2009, recruited Rawlinson to move to Tesla to develop a working EV. It is Rawlinson's name that is on 70 of the patents Tesla received during the development of the Model S. I know that Musk is now claiming that Rawlinson worked on nothing more than the suspension and chassis. That is belied by the fact that Rawlinson was the highest-ranking engineer at the company (the VP of Engineering) during the development of the Model S, that Rawlinson was the front man at all the press events during the car's development, that press articles from the time all identify Rawlinson as the lead engineer for the whole project, and that other employees from the time have all said the Rawlinson was the brains behind making the Model S a working vehicle.

Also this and other Lucid "marketing" sorry educational YT vids claim Tesla now use induction motors. Tesla now use Synchronous RELUCTANCE motors which have better cooling characteristics so this improves efficiency. They're used as they're better for regen. So although general usage efficiency is better with permanent magnet (PM) motors, but induction/reluctance motors are better for low/no load/regen. So overall efficiency, I suspect, is a bigger win with SRM (Tesla). Also SAME SIZE BATTERY???!!! HOW IS A 113kWh = 100kWh ??? Wait till Tesla 4680 Tabless Structural Battery hits the streets. I agree about Musk welcoming more EVs to the market but his cult following feels every other EV on the market or in development is 10+ years behind and destined to fail.
If that was the case chargers would be common to all electrics much like any car brand can go to any gas station.

Calm voice I feel like I’m meditating listening to him
I feel so relaxed and grounded after listening to the CEO speak
Can't wait to see this car on The Grand Tour
Can't wait for the ticker to change to $LCID🚀
When is that going to happen and what stock going to change?
You know the company is legit when the CEO dresses like an engineer
It worked back then, but I wouldn't bet on it nowadays, look at theranos, the ceo was also involved on the product. This company does seem a little more promising though
Lol, 👍🏾👊🏾✌🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
And talks like a con man.
I was going to say geez man ever heard of dry cleaning or buying a suit that fits!!
@@SM-hs9tj It makes me like him more haha.
This is so exciting. Peter's excitement is contagious. I love it
GOD DAMNIT! THAT IS A SEXY VEHICLE!!!! IM SO HYPED FOR ALL THE INNOVATION HAPPENING THESE DAYS! IT FELT AS THOUGH WE HAD STAGNATED FOR QUITE SOME TIME AND NOW WE ALL GET TO BE ALIVE FOR THE REAL JUMP INTO THE FUTURE! GIVES ME CHILLS!!!
Finally some great competition
I'm going to sleep now to dream about the Lucid with anticipation and awaken next Spring. May the force be with you "Lucid my Dream" . 😉😁🌈
I believe people enjoy working for this guy... Seems humble
Lucid will make me so much money in the future! 💪🏾💰💰💰📈
Elon musk's voice give us excitement, hype but for lucie's CEO voice gave us confidence and calming brand representation
Meanwhile tesla is the leader of any luxury brand in sales and I've yet to see 1 lucid. People don't just buy tesla cause it's nice, they buy it cause everything Elon is doing. I'm going to buy an E car and there is 1 choice and it's Tesla!
@@milkboi2386 just got my 2021 Model Y this past Thursday, love it.
Milk Boi you mean electric? Cause Tesla is not the leader of any luxury brand
@@TheYoungWarlock Tesla sells more luxury cars in its model 3 category (possibly midsize or full) than the top 3 competitors. Mercedes BMW and audi. So whatever their midsize is tesla sells more than than the total of those combined. Look it up I believe it was 177k tesla model 3s sold with like 50 BMW in the midsized and 70k midsize or full... you get were im going. Obviously tesla can't sell more in total completely with all the variety they have but I think 2021 tesla will be on top in all categories
Milk Boi would you like to share your sources with us? Because here in England Mercedes is classed as a luxury brand and you’ll see more Mercedes on the road than Tesla
Musk doesn’t fear any competition, in fact, he encourages it..
I have no problems with electric cars but do have problems with the shady way Tesla (& John Deere) does business. What's sad is fan boys are like, "Durrr me don't care I'm being screwed." Also when the overall costs of an electric car VS a decent gas car are either more or only slightly less expensive, people shouldn't buy them. The similar reason I won't buy an overpriced BMW or Mercedes is the similar reason I won't buy a Tesla or John Deere product. But at least with a BMW or Mercedes I can get a repair & replacement parts, which Tesla refuse to give ti it's customers. If people weren't so quick to pay more for an electric car, the prices would drop (like they are starting to). I'd rather wait until I can buy a cheap electric kit or until electric vehicles become cheaper. There are a few videos of Tesla owners hitting only moderately sized pot holes & bending the rim. Costing a couple thousand to repair along thousands of horrible customer service stories.People paying for their Tesla and having to wait 2 yrs VS 3 months like they were told. Then another 6 months for the title so they could get it registered to legally drive. Crappy paint jobs, peeling paint, crooked body panels. Although GM isn't much better. I hope this Lucid doesn't turn out to be the same way. Sorry for the long rant.
Facts
Thanks for having Elon's back. It was looking iffy there for a moment.
@@michaelbrinks8089 evs are gonna be worse than ice cars for a while (maybe up to 10 years from what i've been reading). It is not a Tesla only, problem (btw sorry for broken english)
@@michaelbrinks8089 Michael, you make a good case. EVs are not for everyone. Let's take you, for example. You need to stick with your ICE companies. Of course they may be slower, stinkier, and noisier. They may cost more to maintain and more to fill up every week. But at least you get to enjoy those Oil Change Saturdays at a REAL dealer. While you cool your heels waiting for your oil and filter change, you can shop for bargains on any of the thousands of parts your dealer has to offer.
Beautiful looking car, I'm a Tesla/Elon fanboy, but discovering lucid, I now have to contemplate options.
English and his voice so relaxing
1..2...3...4 seconds later: thinking about it : asks Wouldn't that be wonderful? 😁
