Freezing and Fighting for Aid: Syrian Refugees in Lebanon

2015 ж. 25 Ақп.

As Syria’s civil war has raged over the past four years, more than a million refugees have fled into neighboring Lebanon. The Bekaa Valley, which serves as the main passageway between Damascus and Beirut, is now home to the largest concentration of Lebanon’s Syrian refugees.
Currently in Lebanon there is one Syrian for every four Lebanese citizens - a population growth that has created a strain on the small villages and towns that bear the responsibility of hosting the refugees. Al Marj, a small city of about 15,000 in the southern end of the Bekaa Valley, is home to a refugee camp where approximately 400 families are living.
VICE News traveled to the Bekaa Valley to see how the refugee population is faring as winter fully sets in, and found that the freezing temperatures are only one of their problems.

  • I keep seeing comments about "poor people having babies". It is hard for some people to see a dirty person, with no shoes and torn-up clothes as being anything but poor, but I guarantee you most of these people did not look like this in Syria. Syria was a fairly affluent, and very well-educated population. You see a man in dirty clothes, trying to repair the plastic roof of a shack and then he tells you he is an aerospace engineer. These people had means and comfortable lives in Syria and could afford to raise almost as many children as they wanted before the war broke out. Even after it broke out, many probably couldn't believe it would get to this level as other countries' Arab Springs wound down and were resolved fairly quickly.

    • Hello Dacy, it's not about being rich it's about being in a Arab nation, there's always a war going on or on the way in these country's with al the different religious tribes fighting each other. It is a plain crime to bring children in existence if war can be expected. These innocent children did not ask to be born , ther parents were just so selfish to think only on there own pleasure ....

    • Hello Jasmine, the current conflict dates already back from 2011, Syrians didn't stop bringing children in existence since then though, they kept on bringing innocent newborn babies into existence in an violent environment full well knowing that by doing so they would expose these children to hunger, poverty, diseases, violence, sorrow and some time an early death covered in blood and suffering. Breeding is already questionable as it is but here it is plainly a criminal act. Furthermore Jasmine I like to inform you that insults are the arguments of losers.....

And if you're gonna hate on Muslims them you are straight up ignorant. Hating someone for their religion? Get over yourself. People are people, they were born Muslim, that is how they live, and it what they know and I personally think their values are great. If you ever studied Islam you would know it's actually one of the most peaceful religions especially compared to what Christians read in the bible.

Keep in mind these figures exclude the ones crossing the borders illegally. So the figure is probably much higher. Anyway, Lebanon is not accepting anymore refugees. Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait etc..are not even accepting 1 refugee..Turkey already brought in almost 2 million refugees and don't want anymore. So the ones fleeing may also need..However, given the size and economy of Lebanon, contributing to the Lebanese Syrian refugees is needed because we can't handle it anymore...our economy was weak to begin with

With that being said why are you trying to steer people away from donating jackets, blankets, and clothes to little childern like the ones in the video who are very much in need? Theres a few bad apples in every bunch but I dont find that an acceptable excuse to turn a blind eye. Plus I have infant and kids jackets and clothing around the house I dont need so why not donate them? I understand where you are coming from John, but not all of them are terrorists and not all of them are bad people. I feel as a human being we all have a responsibility to help those who can not help themselves and if that means donating my infant jackets so that an innocent child is warm then so be it.

For any of us in our developed countries that ever complain about meager things and how bad their life sucks needs to watch these videos. I have no solution or right way to solve all these issues but it really pulls at my heart strings seeing these kids suffer when i have 2 little ones myself. I understand how these parents will fight or do whatever it takes to try and keep their kids healthy and safe.

So many blankets, so much access to food, heat, and electricity. I am disheartened at our country's wealth - for some its a blessing, and others its a curse. Its a curse because so many Americans are blind to the needs of those around us. Father, I pray for all the Christian families seeking your assistance and refreshment. Help them by going to Karam Foundation. I pray whoever wins that 1.3 billion dollar jackpot helps refugees with it.

Irrespective of nation, any human can't see kids suffering. Elders should think abt kids future. Sending aid is enough for them.. If other nations are involved, they should talk to syrian govt and should take necessary steps to resolve the issue... Isis should brought down. Locals should not support them. At the same tym syrian should listen to their people and should make decisions which helps to create stability.

Greece is located geopolitically at a disadvantageous place. After all, Europe is an aggregate of the countries which shift responsibility to a foreign country. Europe invaded the Middle East and Africa irresponsibly and completed the social environment in which terrorism generates those areas easily.
