India’s prostitution villages | DW Documentary

Sex work is a way of life for thousands of women in marginalized communities in certain parts of rural India. For many, it is the only way to make money - also due to the Indian caste system and centuries-old prejudices which make it difficult for the families to escape poverty. But winds of change are blowing.
In certain Indian villages, sex work is, in a sense, inherited. Mothers and grandmothers have already worked in the same trade. In the past, they mostly belonged to ethnic groups that worked mainly as performers. The British colonial power criminalized them, and to this day it is especially difficult for the men of these ethnic groups to find regular jobs. Therefore, the female members of the family are often the breadwinners. They are the ones who take out loans, build houses, make important decisions, which is otherwise rare in India. Our reporters Akanksha Saxena and Neerat Kaur looked around the villages - and found signs of hope: The young generation is trying to leave this sad tradition behind and fight for better education and rights.

    • The Indians will just blame the British, as they usually do, for all of their problems and their failures, and under the current Modi regime they've made it hard for NGOs to operate mainly because it shames the Indians and shows the world how little the GOI is actually doing for it's own people! Caste was banned under Dr Ambedkar's excellent secular constitution in 1950, but as usual with the Indians they just ignore the laws that they don't like, and corruption plays its part too! It is what it is.

(I understand this video about prostitution and men of low casts are suffering at least as badly, but in different industries. But regardless, you worded it strange. Yes, it is unbelievable, that in 21 century there are cast systems that discriminate and victimize men, women and their children which is horrible).

    • @@bishesh535 you must be Indian. Indians can’t stand being criticized for your system. Automatically compare it to other systems when it’s not about that. Even only fans, as horrible as it is, is still a “choice” for most people. These women in India don’t have a choice and for many it’s the ONLY one. That’s the difference. As she says, no one in her family had jobs and her sister “had” to get married. Why does her sister HAVE TO get married? Because of tradition and culture in this place. Fight for change in your own country and support women. Stop comparing to other countries and to justify the issues in your own. It’s not about other countries it’s about India.

Look at all the lowly jobs such as street sweepers, manual scavengers all are given to the Dalits. caste system enforces strict endogamy. Honour killing of couples who dare to marry outside from from their caste is still not uncommon. Caste system is against love. The people who deny that cast system doesn't exist or it is practiced sporadically come from the oppressor caste who enjoy the privilegeds of the Caste system

To earn 60k how many times does she have to sell herself. Think about it. And how easy it is for violence to occur here.Chances of disease transmission. Lack of respect. Forced entry into this trade for survival. No one likes this life. As a woman I would request you to speak with some sense.

Especially coming from a family where you would never have to make such a decision. Please, do some deep self discovery and thinking. You look young, I am sure when you are older you will understand. Maybe this shows the cultural difference in America vs India, but I cannot imagine a young woman saying that here.

  • As I scrolled down the comments on this video I could see people being surprised and sad about the people in the video. But the truth is, it's not just these people or women, not just this issue, there are lots of other unseen Harasssments in the Indian society that no one wants to talk about,For an example In this video, I can see a girl saying that she wants to be an Air hostess ; well I m an air hostess in a well reputated Indian airline but still people see us as a high paid waitress who are designated to entertain the men in the flights. Not just this people do misbehave with us and even touch us inappropriately. Indian society has a long way to go, long era is required to change the social status of women.

    • Yes if only there were NGOs during the time of the most perfect man god created - the prophet. Who took woman as sex slaves after war. Married and u married. Also shared by multiple men. Same as eBay ISIS was doing. Mohammad bin Qasim the man who invaded present day Sindh also took Raja Dahirs daughters to Arabia and made them sex slaves. Soo too did the invading Mughals and Turks took unmarried as well as married woman and made them sex slaves or concubines. Imagine that happening to your wife. The greatest mercy they could’ve done to those woman is kill them. As they didn’t take to giving up their bodies by choice. So much of twisting the words of so called Allah to satisfy one’s own lust.
