So and So, your loved ones survived with minor bumps and scrapes so don't sue us."

  • Great story. My dad was with Japan Airlines in the 80s and 90s, out of Chicago and he took my entire Elementary school class to Ohare Airport around 1991/92/93 time frame. He got us an airport tour, onboard tour of a JAL 747-400 (Jumbo Jet) that taxied away from the gate, but didn't actually take off. We all ate a real 1st class style lunch (which was world class fare at that time) and everyone got a gift bag upon disembarking the aircraft. My dad worked so hard to make that so special for every kid (and the teachers too). My dad is an Amazing Salesman, extremely gifted, however his real gifts are seen in the way that he loves his family; such a hero to me!

    • That's ironic, I did the Exact kind of thing for my kids I could make a list of the amazing adventures I put together for them and their classmates all throughout their life. Not once but many many incredible events. 1 included having the entire school every class of every grade designed their own part of a quilt that included each student fingerprint. We had each square that included each classes fingerprint made into a quilt that we gave to my treasure for the PTA( I was pres.) her brother was the pilot of the space shuttle. We got to go on a field trip to KSC on a V.II.P tour. The quilt went with her brother n he took it w him on the space shuttle. After the mission he brought it back to our school we did a big presentation with him. Each kid got a replica coin of the mission( we had made a copy from the real mission coin) he presented the coins n the quilt to the school n the kids which was framed n still hangs at that school. I say all that to say my kids dont even speak to me or care if I'm alive. That was just 1 of the kinda things I did with my kids when they were growing up. So not everyone appreciates their parents n the things they did for them Their are so many parents that are estranged from their grown children n they Dont even know why their own children dont talk to them. Crazy times we live in today, what was once valued is no longer sadly 😢.

My parents divorced when I was very young, so I only got to see him for a couple of weeks during the summer. He didn't talk much about his work. It wasn't until I was in my late 20's did I understand that he worked for Skunk Works (hence why he never spoke of his work), and it took even longer for me to grasp the significance of the work he did. I wish I knew as a kid how cool my dad was. Not really for the cool part, but moreso just to understand more of who he was.

They had this air of absolute seriousness about them that I don't think I'd ever seen before in my life, and that's when it hit me. They just landed us all safely from the sky, and every time pilots do this it takes immense focus, drawing on years of training, and the stakes couldn't be higher. Theres no greater responsibility carried in life than that that of pilots!

In bed by 8:30 pm, NO alcohol, etc. At the time I thought he was so boring, well, he was... as I was kinda the opposite of those things & never really thought about how serious his job really was. He sure did tho... he did not take it lightly... and if you were flying with him you were in very good hands & your safety was his only concern. As I've gotten older I can better understand him and really respect him for his lifestyle choices. Being clear headed in the air was a necessity & something he took extremely seriously and wouldn't allow anything to get in the way of that. I wish i would've been more understanding/ aware back then... looking back, I was a mess... I don't know what he was thinking. Lol.

  • To all wondering why the controls need so much input: it's due to the stability of a passenger aircraft (look up control theory and transfer functions) more stability comes at the expense of control sensitivity. If the system was relatively unstable (or near unstable, I.e. Poles of its transfer function near the imaginary axis), it's flight dynamics would be closer to that of a fighter jet. And for a passenger aircraft, maneuverability isn't really a priority. That's why you see the pilots making so many inputs at low speed.

    • I have also learned the art of copypasta from Wikipedia when no one asked me a question and i want to show my superior intellect in the comments of a KZhead short. What you really wanted to say was, "GROUND EFFECT". That large wing surface 40 feet off the ground has a hard time shedding lift, because air pressure is reduced, meaning control surfaces have less effect when the wing is "floating" as opposed to "flying", requiring exaggerated inputs to achieve similar response from the wing. All aircraft suffer from this when they are close to a surface like the ground or calm sea. Some were manufactured to take advantage of this particular effect, flying low above water at high speed, look up ekranoplan or caspian sea monster. But thats just me being a smartass piece of shit, the nonsense i stole from wikipedia is below. Lols A wing generates lift by deflecting the oncoming airmass (relative wind) downward.[8] The deflected or "turned" flow of air creates a resultant force on the wing in the opposite direction (Newton's 3rd law). The resultant force is identified as lift. Flying close to a surface increases air pressure on the lower wing surface, nicknamed the "ram" or "cushion" effect, and thereby improves the aircraft lift-to-drag ratio. The lower/nearer the wing is with regards to the ground, the more pronounced the ground effect becomes. While in the ground effect, the wing requires a lower angle of attack to produce the same amount of lift. In wind tunnel tests in which the angle of attack and airspeed remain constant, an increase in the lift coefficient ensues,[9] which accounts for the "floating" effect.
