I knew it was the mass air flow sensor
Thx Scotty! This may have helped me, my car needs a new starter soon and idles rough but never stalls... Would that be the mass airflow sensor or the O2 sensor?
Scotty great video as usual. Here is the thing. I have similar problem with my ‘02 Mitsubishi Montero 3,5 v6. I have replaced several sensors and changed almos all lines of vacuum and still have some troubles at low speed in load conditions. I have a lot of suspects on the MAF sensor so I got a can of CRC MAF cleaner but the can says it is not good for Karman Vortex MAF Sensor as used on Lexus and some Mitsubishi’s. According to the design it looks like mine is a KV MAF so I’m hesitating about use the product or not. I searched for any specific for KV sensors but it looks like there is nothing specific for them. What you think?? Thanks in advance!! Keep up the good job!!!
Lol @Common sense
@@ethanvink1710 did you plug a scanner in? Spark plugs or faulty coil. Always clean the mass air flow sensor.

Hahaha
😂😂😂I hear that🙏🙌
Scotty, if all car mechanics were as honest as you are, there would be world peace !
At least there would be 80% lower cost of cars maintenance.
Unfortunately there is no such thing as a honest one in the real world.
Scotty has taught me everything I know about vehicles. I appreciate him.
i wonder if any one caught the fact he broke the clip on that maf sensor... then jump cut it out....
Hes thought me everything I know too.(about cars) lol
Same here buddy
what happens if i disconnect maf sensor
You are my favorite go-to for vehicle information. Thank you for bestowing knowledge upon the general public of do-it-yourselfers. You're the best Scotty!
Scotty you’re like the crazy smart mechanic uncle I never had! Thanks for sharing your decades of knowledge and wisdom with us dummies. I learn so much from your videos.
I’d buy a vhs collection of all Scotty’s videos
You are a real person Scotty. You're a master of your trade and seems you still have passion for what you do. You genuinely help people out of the kindness of your heart and you're not a mindless automaton. I wish there were more people like you Scotty, the world would be a better place. Keep on keeping on!

I absolutely love this mechanic. This man understands how a car ticks just by common sense. Use to employee a man like Scotty until he moved out of state. Sure miss JW. I sure LEARNED a lot from that man but still couldn't hold a candle to his wealth of knowledge. I'm 61, been a used car dealer for 35 years and still love a mechanical challenge.

I'm so glad I found your channel! You give honest advice that we need. Thank you Scotty.
Scotty, you are the best! Your advice has saved me literally thousands of dollars over the 6 years I have owned my used 1999 Chevy prism, it will be hitting 200k miles this year! Thanks a lot! I have a request: could you compile a list/video of DIY car maintenance that is ordered based on importance for vehicle longevity? Also the list/video could include how often each maintenance item should be done? Thanks again!
Great idea I would like that as well
wow after 4 years of driving with the traction control and abs codes that 3 shops couldnt fix, this fixed the problem! Scotty is the man and a friggin legend, thank you!
Excellent video, good informative content is hard to find and everything you have is great help. Thanks Scotty!! You’re the best!!

I have watched several of your videos on various issues with cars. I used to own an old (2001) Hyundai Sonata....I know, but it's what I could afford at the time! But with your help I kept it running & was able to sell it! I have to say Thank You Scotty Kilmer. You saved me thousands of dollars by sharing your knowledge. My type of no nonsense mechanic! Love you Scotty!
I love the simplicity & style. Very easy to follow & understand! Truly your experience precedes you! Thank you scotty for always been true!
now, if i could only find a mechanic that will fix it honestly like Scotty did, instead of charging me $1800 for all the stuff that wasn't wrong with it.
@Barney and also finding a competent mechanic like Scotty as well. Because a lot of people in the industry who call themselves “mechanics”, are actually just glorified parts changer. They’ll just change a part instead of actually troubleshooting it.
When I realized I wasn't able to afford a mechanic I started picking up some of those mechanic books at auto zone back then they were reasonable $3-6 now they're $30 or more
@@headers12 I've found the best way is to find someone who is certified but working either in a small shop or alone. The chain shops are the ones I've had the most problems trying to scam me
Buy your own scan tool, research the codes online and fix it yourself
Barney is scary to think that most mechanics will rip you off like that
Thanks Scotty. It was ready helpful. Cheers
Love these videos , just the facts ,no filler, all killer keep it up Scotty
Congratulations on 2M subs, best to you in the future scotty!
Gosh I wish I had u in my 20's when seriously wanted to study mechanics ....and I thought...these mechanics don't know nothing now I found u and it makes all perfect sense to me...👍☺ finally pure knowledge!
Thank you for your great idea!! It will help many drivers and car owner to maintain their car in a cheapest and effective way.
I had cylinder misfires the same month I had to get the emissions test. Went to the mechanic and he wanted to do an $800 tune up! I didn't think I wanted to keep the car, but took a gamble and added some fuel injector cleaner to a tank of gas and cleared the check engine light. Drove it gently for a couple days to work the fluid through and then drove normally. NO MISFIRES, no codes, passed emissions. That was almost 2 years ago...kept the car :)
Aye man Nice stuff! I bet it felt good too!
use seafoam, nothing works better
I always run one through when I get a car. Then every oil change as a tune up. My favorite is gumout or Chevron techron
Cool. which injector cleaner brand was it? I heard Lucas is good.
Remember to record your freeze frame data before clearing the codes. You might erase valuable troubleshooting data!
One of your best videos! I’ve always cleaned MAFs as part of routine maintenance on all of my vehicles!
Love your channel. Just found it today and you already saved me time, trouble, and money. I subscribed.
Always helpful, thank you 😊
"Let's put this stupid beauty cover back on" lol You're the man Scotty!
😂
I call that cover the engine girdle
I bet there are quite a few mechanincs that would charge for the traction controll fix as well.
Charge and not do any work
or replace something else that didnt need the work done. happened to me once, i asked to see the old item "oh he threw it away already".
Ha,ha..He didn’t fixed any.He just take out the mass air flow sensor and clean it.Waited about half an hour and putting it back.Than every went back to normal after he road tested it at 60 miles an hour driving testing.
Chi Chu Scotty successfully identified the problem, its source, and addressed it. By definition he fixed what was wrong with the car.

You are an encyclopedia of experience. I love your videos. Certainly worth watching.
Scotty sir you are the best I’ve learned so much watching your videos , thank you!
The MAS Sensor in a lot of European made 4 cyl cars can also effect the auto transmission causing it to not shift down when accelerating or starting off. As a result, lots of these cars end up at the Wrecking Yards as owners think the transmission is worn out. A clean MAS also makes a big difference in Toyota V6 & 4 cyl engines. Great instructional video Scotty, this should help a lot of people. Thank you. 👍🇦🇺.
It's not Mas sensor it's maf sensor
Love these new videos of you doing actual work on random, real-world problems. As an example, you've previously told us about the MAF cleaner in one of your older videos, but now we see you actually using the stuff. It's little things like this that help the new people to mechanics.
Hey Scotty great video as usual!!! Thank you for helping us all save some money, and making sure we don’t get scammed.
My mechanic Dad that I never had. Thanks Scotty for everything.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge Scotty . I always watch all you videos 😎
I discovered this cleaner before finding your video. I can confirm it made a HUGE difference in our 1992 Pathfinder; cleaning the MAF even resolved the dreaded "Nissan engine surge".

I totally agree with that last part about getting your car inspected ASAP. The CEL may be gone today, but it can come back quickly. It's better if you've already passed inspection when that happens.
big hi from egypt You are always amazing and thank you for all this valuable information
I really enjoy this type of video Mr Kilmer. Very informative, I might go and clean my MAF sensor as preventative maintenance.
Great video Scotty. I have about 20 cars in our work fleet that I oversee, and I appreciate these little tips so I can do what I can and only send them to the garage when I have to. (the contractor we use is a great man though, just he has so much he's doing already when I can do it myself I always try. ) Helps me save the big stuff for him and I can tackle more if the small stuff 👍
He takes care of the big stuff and you the little stuff, huh? Hahaha

Been awhile since I watched in a video...the amount of views you have now is insane. Congratulations for real
My Yaris was also hesitating, first thing I did was to clean the MAF sensor and voila! No more hesitation.
My 1 litre Yaris is going strong touch wood :)
Did you had the check engine light on when it was hesitating?
I got to try that on my little 2004 Echo.
nope@@edsanchez9198
If the MAF was dirty you may wanna clean the throttle body. At least the throttle plate. More junk on plate = less air flow = improper ratio causing issues.
I have learned so much just watching a few of Scotty's videos. Good stuff!
Seems to me that even though it's an annoyance to disable the other systems, it could be a good idea, as it helps protect those systems from damage if the underlying issue isn't resolved quickly.
This guy is so cool man...Great mechanic, Great videos.
We were given a price of $500 for a similar fix on a Lincoln towncar 1998. DIY will pay for the reader! Thx!
It's crazy how much they charge. I have a diesel with 2 small fuel filters underneath my truck... Dealer wants like 140.00 for the filters, 300.00 for changing them. I bought the filters online for 1/3 and changed them myself for free.
Yea the dealership wanted 500 for replacement of the maf so i did it myself in minutes i was like how is this 500 bucks of labor lmao
I have a 1990 Buick LeSabre Limited with OBD-I and learned the transmission system cooks the fluid! My half brother got me this and a 2002 Explorer.. A nasty storm contributed to wrecking the Explorer, as I want to time travel to stop myself from driving home and power napping! The Buick ran great, till I put Seafoam in the tank, then the transmission fluid was foaming!
Dealers screw us anyways and I don’t trust them. I need to find a used 3.3 liter inline 6 for a vintage 1982 Ford Granada or a used 3.8 liter V6, or used 302 v8.

Hey Scotty! Thanks for explaining about how to look at the speed of the car when the code occurred! This is the type thing I wish I knew more about, I mean, I have OBD-II software that gives SO much data, it's a program you had in a video once, the Ottotest software, and it's incredibly detailed, and it drives me crazy because I wish I knew more of the significance of the various things, and what things to look at. I wish there was a manual or something that expanded on those type things. Do you know of anything like that? Thanks! Longtime subscriber
Scotty is awesome! King of the mechanics!
I am new to your channel and really liking it. My wife has a 2016 Subaru Forester XT (under extended warranty) that kept tripping the warning lights for the crash avoidance system (Eyesight) and Dynamic speed control. It went to the shop several times under warranty. On the last visit, they diagnosed it to the be a faulty mass air sensor wire in the harness. However, due to us having been there so many times, they replaced the entire wiring harness. Wish they had seen this video and diagnosed it sooner.
Scotty you are a TREMENDOUS help. I sincerely thank you for all you do
Congratulations 🔝🔝
You would be amazed just how much of a problem a mass air flow sensor can cause, thanks for the tip scotty keep being honest because your stocks on respect will rise steadily!!😎👍
Hi, great video, I just subscribed and i'll start checking out your others. I have a question, a new mass air flow sensor for the van I just bought is only like $45. Do they gradually go bad or just all at once? I'm just wondering since it has 200k if it's worth just replacing instead of just cleaning to prevent any future innefficiencies from occurring

The MAF sensor spray is exactly the same as brake cleaner and besides a MAF sensor is only made up of one schottky diode and one zener diode. So you'll be okay using brake cleaner. P.s; you're better off just replacing your diodes as they cost 0.002 of a cent each, plus they just push in ( no soldering needed). You can download the data sheet for your MAF sensor to find out what the correct impedance levels and ESR your MAF sensor requires. Honestly it's not as hard as it sounds and is very rewarding when you save a lot of pennies.
Thank you Scotty. You are very helpful. God bless.
