4 Reasons Coyotes Hang Up and How to Prevent Them! A very popular question that I receive from predator callers is: Why do the coyotes keep hanging up? Watch this video to find out how to keep coyotes from hanging up.
I explain in detail 4 reasons I believe coyotes hang up and give you ideas as to how you can increase your odds when calling, if this this is happening to you. Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy this video. Please feel free to share it with friends. www.predatorquest.com

Absolutely love the brutal honesty.
Yes, I was having my coffee, I think I need a predator quest cup like you have
Great pointers Les.
good tips Les...thanks!
Absolutely right. Just from watching KZhead hunting vids, many times I hear the hunter adjust camera or chamber a round, and the galloping coyote freezes. It looks directly at the camera. Even at 150-200 yards. What we think is quiet is audible to them. Deer, hogs and other wild game survive by being first to see, hear, smell other predators and prey.
Excellent video on coyotes! Learned a lot from it!
Brutal honesty!! SOOO appreciated in a P.C. world!! Good job!! Lil trick taught to me "Highway hunting" up north. DONT slam your truck doors when you park on the side of the road to walk in. Critters are used to hearing vehicles running down the road & ignore it but being "chatty" or stopping suddenly & jumping out closing doors is a dead giveaway when folks see yotes crossing the road. We just drove on past 1/4 mile or so slowing down gradually & exiting quietly to do our walk in a couple hundred yards to make our stand & then started calling if the wind was right. Usually worked. Especially if the yotes were close to the lil towns alongside the highways. Yote were hitting town garbage cans & rest areas for trash & used to stopping cars. Trapped a lot of "townie yotes" by making hole trapping sets right next to road just outside of towns & using grapple hooks to let them run to treeline & get snagged up. Yotes would cruse the roads looking for roadkill & food litter folks would throw out. In the winter the snow was a dead giveaway where they crossed. Fresh snow tracks easy to read, just go on past quarter to half a mile to "Quiet" park & do your sneak in. We laid flat w a white sheet over us w only the white painted bbls sticking out, using mouth diaphram calls from under the sheet would bring em in. By the time they realized that "bump" in the snow was a trap it was too late.
Awesome video

hey Les never heard of you but im glad i found your channel , i subscribed and i def think im hitting one or two issues that you have brought up . i just wanna say thanks for the tips and i plan on browsing your videos as i think i call too long or possibly too loud . anyway thank you for the videos !
seems hunting Eastern coyotes is quite the challenge. I got another the other night however, they hung up and wouldn't cross an old road. One male came within 200-215 yds and he never left the other 2 flew South through he cornfield. I never shot at them because I don't want them any more educated. The next night had another come within 200 yds +or- and he wouldn't come any closer, I was setup on a wooded fence line. Almost every one I've shot has been between 150-237 yds. hard to get them in any closer as a rule. Almost all of my sets are longer 1 - 3 hrs. calling less with distress and low volume until they blow up, then I hit the coyote vocals briefly. Sure appreciate your time and insight, just started hunting yotes a little over a year ago, it's been an educational journey. Thanks again!
thanks for all of the information this is a great thing
Thank you for watching and commenting Antonio! LJ
Words of wisdom from a wise man
Another thing to point out with respect to coyotes seeing something is birds. In my experience birds, magpies, crows, ravens, hawks and even eagles have been the first into the call. I have watched coyotes that were coming in and stop to observe the birds. Like they use the birds as aerial support in locating. If the birds see you they will flare off and leave, coyote will most likely do the same or hang up. Keep movement to a minimum and observe the birds and how they react. I had a golden eagle come swooping in from behind and tried to take my gray hat off while I was hid behind a log calling. Pert'ner swallowed my call. Enjoy your videos, keep up the good work.
Thanks for the great info....
Your welcome Grant and I am glad that you liked it! Get to CALLIN!!! LJ
thank you Les, you have given me some ideas on how to take my game to the next level.
Thats great Patrick! Thanks for watching and commenting! LJ
Great info Les and thanks for sharing. Later and all the best.
Thank you! Good luck on your trapline and thanks for watching! LJ
Thanks for the video.
Your welcome David and I hope that you enjoyed it! Have a good evening and thanks for watching! LJ
Thanks for the lesson Les. I had a problem couple nights ago. 1 yote turned into 5 standing on a fence line at 300 yards. They howled like crazy but wouldn't commit.
I was out trying to call in a black bear today. No show. The place had quite a few scat piles too. All I saw was deer though. A few times I could here something walking around,,,,so maybe it saw me, and turn-tailed. Great video information Les.
I had 3 coyotes come in last week and stop on the dime and they started looking past me and I couldn’t figure it out untill a heard of Antelope ran in and started chasing the coyotes. Coolest thing Iv ever seen and filmed.
you're my hero bud!!!
thank you Kody! I appreciate you coming to my channel! Good luck out there! LJ
this helps lots thanks
Thank you Garrett and thanks for watching! LJ
Good info I had one coyote running in from my left and it stopped directly down wind but I like using the 10-15 mph windy days up elevated because I only have hand calls thought it smelled me it
Thanks again I have been taking notes. A lot of my stands are dictated by access roads to public land and the public land is too close to the road a lot of the time. I think I make stands too close to the road. It is also a lot easier to hide the pickup if I walk farther from it. I also think I play my sound too loud right off the bat. Maybe you could speak to that in a later video. I don't think anyone is as instructional as you. The leaves are turning and I am getting a itchy trigger finger. Where I live we have ground squirrels and I have put a couple of thousand rounds through the old 22lr which is great practice for the dogs. I am working on swinging through the shot when running and am trying to be more patient to get them to stop. A 250 yard shot with a dog stopped is easier than a 100 yard shot with them moving at least for me. I appreciate your willingness to teach. The biggest game changer for me was buying an electronic caller. The yotes still laugh at me sometimes but I am literally 100x more successful than I was with mouth calls. It seems like most of your success is getting in tune with the coyotes. I am getting better at it too and am starting to be able to understand what they are interested in. You are awesome and I think I will buy some gear to help support you.
Thanks
Thank you for watching Joshua! LJ
"You think you're Commando Joe and you're not." Bwahahaha! Love it! My new name is Kommando Kelly 😁
For a novice caller how do you set your stand up, what is the go to sound you would throw at them first? I know coyotes are in the country I hunt I hear them all the time, but I am striking out. How long do you play one sound before you change it to another?
Hey Les, love the tips in this video. I'm planning on doing some coyote hunting this fall here in Nova Scotia, Canada and I'll be keeping these tips in mind
Thank you dean! I wish you lots of luck on your hunting this coming fall! Take care and thank you for watching/commenting on my video! Have a good day! LJ
Your videos are awesome! That you for sharing your knowledge. I hunt in SC with lots of thick areas. Can you do a video on that kind of hunting? I'm new, but I'm getting better. All of my kills are at night with thermal. So, it would be cool to learn some new techniques.
Great stuff as always Les! Too often we hunters find something else to blame for our lack of success! It seems like whitetail hunters are the worse! 😜 Now there are obviously times where the barometric pressure is abnormal with a front moving through that has them laid up but when they respond but don't present a shot there is usually a reason. Here in northeast Texas I typically hunt cattle ranches and the landowners always ask where my ATV is or tell me I am welcome to drive my 4x4 into the pastures. They usually follow that up with "they are used to seeing trucks in the field". I thank them for the suggestion and then let them know that while they may be used to the truck they also know is typically has a human near it! Canis latrans may not be spooked by the presence of humans on your property but they are aware and that alone can alter there response! Besides all of that, walking the fence rows allow the hunter to see game trails cutting under the fence that could alert them to critter highways! 🐾 I am going to share a link to this video on a predator hunting page on Facebook and I'll tag you in it if that is okay Les? And if your ever driving thru northeast Texas via I30 I'd love to have an actual cup of joe with ya! My treat! ☕ Be safe and get back to callin! ~ JJ
Thank you JD! I appreciate your story and knowledge as well! You are correct when out walking, you see so many other "signs or evidence" that helps you to conclude what you should be doing. Fell free to share! :) Thanks for watching and commenting JD. Have a good day! LJ
Hi Les, Thanks Very good video, but how can I call or bring a coyote that been called before?
Hey les your thanks for your videos bout coyotes. Listening to your knowledge of coyote hunting has helped me a lot. Especially for here in western Ky where it's so thick I have picked up some great tips on where and how to set up. As a beginner to coyote hunting I wanted to say thanks and I enjoy watching all your videos
Thank you Terry for watching and commenting! The toughest part of it all is "learning" so that you can start successfully killing coyotes. Start reading and learning about trapping coyotes as well. Once you understand why they use the travel corridors, you will know where you need to set up and call the coyotes as well. Lots and lots of knowledge from a trapper can be soooo useful for a caller. Thanks again. LJ
Thanks for the tips Les. Knowledge is power and I'm always interested hearing and applying new methods to improving my own personal success. I hunt a lot of public land in my area with a ton of hunting pressure. Sometimes I would like blame my lack success on people possibly over calling or calling the "wrong way" if there is such a thing. I would love to get some feedback or possibly a tutorial on calling practices people should avoid using and some tips from you to correct these habits to further educate ourselves and quit educating those dang coyotes lol. Thanks again and good luck to ya.
Thank you J.W. and you are correct. Many people call the 'wrong' way by calling too close to roads and not wanting to sit very long. In higher pressured areas, I like to walk and get a long ways from roads. You may only make a handful of calls in a day, but your success will go up dramatically due to getting back into country that coyotes will come cautiously investigate. Give them even more time and just set there taking everything in and you will be rewarded. Thanks again for your comment and watching. LJ
LES-- a lot of guys wear sunglasses when they aint lookin thru them there on top of hat brim on cap -THEY REFLECT FLASH where ever they look ---
You should do some videos on bow hunting coyotes please please please. Awesome videos thank u so much for ur time good man.
totally agree with getting off the road especially among your other tips. I'm from NW MN . FLAT country, wise, & roads every 1 mile. sneaking/stealth makes or break your hunt. keyword: stealth
Thank you Nicholas! Your area of Minn is exactly like my area around Edgar, NE was when I was growing up. You had to get as far from the road as possible and nearest the draw or thick cover that the coyote was bedded in. Many of the coyotes do not like to show their face because it is so open and they are shot at if they are ever out and about. So, they stay on the low down. Thanks again and give them heck! LJ
Cheers bro and i have 2packs of coyotes were i hunt i locate call they just challenge back how do i get them to come just distress intead of howels and its like its a no mans land i see 2 single quite often and tracks
Les do you have any videos on upstate New York type of coyote hunting no long wide open fields just thicker northeast woods any hints tricks or ideas.
Could it also be that they smelled me? I have heard I need to be downwind from them, and use scent control spray.
If you have a coyote hold up on you and you feel its a boundary line. Do you give him an hour or so and reset closer to him or on his boundary line trying to call him again or wait for another day.
Hey Les have you ever called coyotes in South Central Nebraska? Ive struggled getting yotes to come in where I hunt! I know there are coyotes on the properties I hunt but I just dont have much success! Do you have any tips or tactics that I could use or places that you've had success? thanks!
I agree with all of that I've gotten lazy with that before to just didn't feal like walking through 3 feet of snow but you have to do it to have success thanks for the video good luck hunting
I agree Jerad! Once I figured out snowshoes, I actually enjoyed trying to get close to coyotes. The closer you get to them and their bedding area without them knowing your there......the easier it is for them to come in or take a look! I love to try and get close to them. Thanks again for watching! LJ
Hey there Les I'm from Montana on the high line we called last weekend had two dog start barking at us but came in the one came right in about 350 400 yard just walked in and sat down and barked at us but we didn't know there was a nether one coming from are left but when he saw him he got up and walked out y would they do that
its 242 am and this is the second video youva had coffee in so im going to make a pot lol
Me too lol
Great videos Les....subscribed. Question...I live in Wisconsin...in Wisconsin we have to wear blaze orange while hunting coyotes. I get why during deer season...don't get it for coyote. Do you think that limits me to night time hunting only.....because I would stand out during the day...what are your thoughts ? Keep the great vids coming !
No u dont
Man.. you ain't lyin' about their Vision! I'm a n00b to coyotes still, but... got busted while trying to sneak in first thing, it was still super early and dark as heck! And from where I heard them from (actually closer to the road then from where I had... about an hour earlier... turned-in from and drove up in among the fingers of the terrain so the truck wouldn't be seen by them from up on he hill looking down) I know these ones down low didn't see my skyline yet either. Was using a little mini-draw to sneak up toward a larger bush near the top of this meadowy hill that borders a ravine with ground squirrels. AND I put the 3D Leafy on before I even started the hike-in! And I pride myself and being as ninja quiet as I can possibly be. And everything was sprayed down with scent killer. And I wash with scent-free, dye-free and add Baking Soda in there. I make sure I can't smell anything with my nose jammed all up into it on all the pieces of gear. Could NOT believe they could see me that far away when it was still that dang dark!!! I actually wanted to turn on the red headlamp during the little climb up that mini-finger because it was still that dark. But light from the approaching sunrise (maybe greater than an hour away ?) was just barely enough that I figured I didn't dare turn that thing on now.
Hey Les I have a big question... I’m extremely paranoid about wearing my hunting clothes in the truck to drive to the stand because I have a dog who rides with me and you know how it is my truck isn’t always “clean”. Do you have any tips or incite that can help me ease my mind about it or am I right to dress at my truck?
lmao "commando joe"
Great Video..... You always carry the rifle and SG in. I was wondering if you have any other items you found over the years that came in handy while coyote hunting?
Thank you Robert! Binos are pretty important to me as well! I will be doing a video on all of the products that are helpful in my success in the very near future. Thank you for watching and commenting Robert! Have a good day! LJ
Thanks for the response Les. I find your video very informative. I have not been hunting coyotes as long as you, but I found that it has helped me in hunting Deer and Elk here in Idaho. Have you found similar findings in your area? Look forward to the next video.
Take me hunting with you, coyote hunting is my passion. Or come to nem mexico. Cheers
Do coyotes return to places they’ve been called into before?
Thanks for the Videos. 1 do you always bring a shotgun? 2 I like the hunt with my dog is it ok to let her move around the area while I'm hiding? Thanks Les, I want that hat you're wearing too....(I'm guessing you sell them?)
Finishing my comment it posted before I was done but as I was saying I like using the wind to my advantage. when I can hand call from a elevated position like over a deep very wide wash area or from atop small mesas I figure they can't smell me because my scent is blowing over the top of them well like I was saying in my prematurely posted unfinished comment the coyote stopped directly downwind 150 yds and stopped and headed slowly but kept looking back and stopping directly forward away from me I lost sight of it in the sage/rabbit brush and it stopped facing me about 350 yds out long enough for me to reposition my tripod adjust my parallax & magnification after getting the shot 2 other coyotes took off running from my right they were just about 20 yds I never knew they were there afterwards that's what I guessed why the first one stopped, i seen it come in solo running down from a rocky little Mesa about 300 yds to my front left it was deterred by the other 2
im a Missouri boy don't have them wide open spaces, but I kill my share of yotes.Do you hunt around heavy timber much? I seem to do better staying on stand a minimum of 30 min. im trying to call them to open hay fields or pasture. I've know if your hunting around cattle you will find yotes.
Hey Jeffrey, I have called my fair share in and around timber. Sitting longer and calling less has been one of my tactics for sure. Thank you for watching! LJ
I swear they hear my jeep door shut!!
Yeah if you're not careful they will hear the door shut...we always gently push them shut...try not to cough..sneeze..clear your through...etc...the have exceptional hearing and ability to pinpoint where sounds come from...
another killer is a watch with a flat crystal the reflection can be seen for a mile or more
gene, your absolutely correct! Many people do not realize the reflection that your face, watch, bipod, scope lens, rifle barrel, etc give off to an approaching coyote. Thank you for watching and commenting gene! LJ
Im not as serious a coyoty getter as you are but ive killed probably around a 100 or so but i didnt start killing any until i started covering up face hands gun sent i even put a dust cover on my scope with a small window cut in it because i started noticing they would hang up and be staring at me and their head would be bobin and weaving i think they were seeing that scope lens as a big eye looking at them
You hit the nail on the head with all of that! Your far above most and have admitted to seeing that coyotes pick up on that stuff. I've always stated that if you are not paranoid of what the coyote is seeing when he is coming in, your never going to understand them. Thanks again gene! LJ
they might hangup because their cell plan is out of minutes
WHY THATS SO MEAN U KILLED THEM IN THE COVER WAAAAA
So get my fat ass off the road.Great video and couldnt be more true.
How do the MFK guys shoot so many coyotes sitting on a stool with jeans and a t-shirt?
theyre in thick woods
I saw you wave twice to the camera man and tell him where the coyote was and you still shot it with the shotgun. Maybe thats why the female hung up?
i literally couldn’t hate you morw
