Great info Les, Looking back on my hunts water sources is where I have called more coyotes than where there was no water. Les you are 100% right about that guy locator calling out in the open & all that stuff. All he did was educate coyotes! Thanks Les

Great information! There's a lot of stuff out there showing coyotes getting shot, but not nearly as much talking about what it takes to get there. You gave me some stuff to think about on my next hunts for sure.

Great info Les, I love the part about locating and announcing yourself to the coyotes, makes since. You mentioned weather patterns & storms, when is the optimal time to hunt them before, after, during??? Thanks. You always have been one of my favorites and have been watching your shows for years. Thank you Gregory! I like to hunt before a storm.....then about 3-4 days after a storm. Coyotes, deer, etc all know a storm is coming due to the pressure change, so they eat more and prepare, but even they do not know how long it will last. So, with that said, I have hunted many times after a storm only to not call many coyotes. But once they use up their reserves from feeding before the storm and the pressure gets back to normal, they will want to eat again. Thanks for watching. LJ

Hey Les. Thanks so much for all the info. Watching part 2 next. It is because of watching your vids I am getting into Coyote hunting. I am in an area right now in Southern Nevada and the terrain is extremely difficult to see them moving. I am trying to get every advantage I can and these "Tips" videos are AWESOME. the first double on coyotes I ever got was on a frozen lake ( lake erie in ohio) was in February, I howled to them off and on for hour and a half and they would answer me back . So I just passionately waited and finally the female came in first , the male was sitting on a frozen pileup of ice, the female got about 150 yrds from male looked back at him gave a short bark the male got up and followed suit towards the female, I thought to myself boy Evan in the animal world the female speaks and the male follows! lol but I learned alot that day watching there behavior and them communicating to each other and it was like a light switch went on, and after that I was a much better coyote hunter. But boy they are a smart animal for sure. And I know you put alot of time in to get where you are now, and alot of coyotes have hit the dirt from information you put out there to help people enjoy this fun sport and just wanted to thank you cause it has helped me alot on the differant styles of calling coyotes.

Less I think you are spot on on comments especially on the locator part, I have been calling since the mid 80 love it as a hobby only done a few small competition. I enjoy your videos
Love the videos and the hunts but this was great. I was taught a lesson on Friday. When you said shoot 100% that really sent the point home. I went to a property that my buddy said had 2 coyotes harassing the family dog that morning. Muskeg and rabbit tracks near by. Set up with decoy yote 30 yrds off bushline and a sat along the bush with a small 3 sided blind for cover. Did a quick rabbit and waited 2 mins then short coyote call. I learned blinds work both ways. When I saw the first one she was 60 yrds running at decoy. When I turned I saw 2 more at 130. She saw me and ran. I was able to stop her and made a nice shot (29lbs) but should have had 2 or 3. Large field but only 130-200 yards to go over hills or hit trees. Lesson learned. No blind or make sure you can see over it / hunt suspected great property with buddy. Make sure round is in chamber. Going back tomorrow. Hope to get my first shotgun coyote tomorrow. What's your biggest yotes weigh? Male and female. If your ever in Alberta look me up.

Everything Outdoors with Les Johnson Well I hunted some Monday and nothing. So determined to get a shotgun coyote I left my .204 behind on the last stand.😔 It was the only one I saw and he winded me. Plus I was in tall grass low on a creek and lost him after 150 yrds. Waited to see where he might show up but only saw him walking back out the way he came in. Moral of story... a rifle shot is better than no "shot". Hope to be out Friday and Sunday. The shotgun will prevail! Lol Would love to see a video of the patterns your getting on paper with the shotgun at 30 and 40 yrds. Thx again!

Thats a gem of a video Less. I believe your advice on contests is spot on. I gave up on contest calling years ago as I just felt it took the fun out of the hunt for me. I would be terribly critical of myself for a missed shot or a botched stand. Now I kill the same number of coyotes without paying an entry fee or the added stress of missing one.

great video thanks for the info. u opened my eyes up to so much I could of been possibly doing wrong. do u have any diff information about eastern coyotes. I live on my farm in washington pa and I hunt whatever is in season I live to hunt basically. any advice on the eastern species that might not be the same as western coyotes? even if u dont answer me I appreciate the info u already have out there for everyone.
Thank you les for the advice it's hard to call down by lincoln Nebraska. I think it's about there's no pastures or ranches.
The small acreages are tough to navigate around. Typically if you know of little chunks of timber that are on the properties around lincoln, that is where you are going to find the coyotes. I would sneak close enough to them that you know nothing is inside of them watching you and call these spots right at sundown with not much volume. One coyote a day is better than none. I try not to ever call spots in poor times during the day when I know I can call one out of that spot at sundown. I know they are there, but do not want to call the spot until I know they will come investigate. I agree on being a tough area to call. Lots of traffic and people tend to make it much more difficult. when. Coyotes howled at night les is that a bad thing. I'm hunting coyotes that this time of the year have had a lot of pressure. I do day and night and am struggling. I have a good but of ground, any advice? longer stands, less prey sounds more coyote, stealthier? Hope to hear from ya man, watch all your videos and you're by far one of the best. I hunt in indiana, Southern part. lot of hay fields, pastures and tighter crop fields
Here is the key siler, if you are calling the same ground all year, these coyotes are totally used to you and your tactics. Your parking in the same spots, walking in to the exact same spots to call, etc. They know you and what you do. Try hunting from a different spot and just howl. One lone howl and then wait 3-4 minutes and howl again. Do no prey sounds. Mix it up. Plus it is breeding season and this is the toughest time to get them to come in. Hang your call up for two weeks and then go out after that. leave them alone. Do you like to be bothered when your with your girlfriend or wife in an intimate moment? Thanks....LJ

Thank you Les. I always glean wisdom off of your videos. I do not think I will locate the coyotes. Do you use decoys? It does not seem like it in the videos. They seem to help distract committed coyotes. Thanks again for the video and answering one of my biggest questions about locating them.

when you said that the property that was hunted wrong became the worst property in the contest, does that mean that the next contest that is held in the area that property will be scarred? I know it sounds like a dumb question, but Im fairly new to contests, my sons and I just go out and call for the sport and control.

I was always taught a "fresh" track had a coyote standing in it (Dead Coyote standing) and a "recent" track didn't. FWIW.
I definitely "prefer" that kind of track!!! I lick my finger, and then stick it down in the track and then I know just how fresh it is! :) Thanks for watching and commenting! LJ

I have carried a two guns and it is a lot of work. I use a .204 and have a partner who is a shot gunner. Makes life easier. If you have never hunted a Avocado grove. There is no pup die off around Avocado's They don't have do chase there dinner down.
